About this game
**The Betweenlands is no longer in active development
It's time for Mori to find her place in the world, but she's stuck on the dark and wet Core, miles below the beautiful Surface. She must use her trusty grappling hook to traverse the Betweenlands, clusters of floating islands hovering between the Core and the Surface. Explore and climb unique skyscapes on your way to discovering Mori's true desires in this passionately-crafted high-precision platformer.
Master the use of this addictive physics-based grappling hook to pull off thrilling maneuvers and reach high speeds. Carefully hone your placement and timing to manipulate your momentum exactly how you need. There are a million ways to solve every problem by adjusting how you use this one simple tool.
In a world where the wealthy use massive mechanical wings for vertical travel, help Mori beat the odds and overcome impossible obstacles with nothing but a grappling hook, constantly risking it all for her dream. Meet diverse characters along the way who encourage or challenge Mori's beliefs, forcing her to question why she wants to reach the Surface at all.
Inspired by my own life experiences, The Betweenlands is a painfully personal tale of determination, self-discovery, and the feeling of blazing your own path in a world of deeply ingrained norms and protocols. Created by a single developer*, all mechanics, design, sound, and art (pixel and full resolution) form a cohesive unit to tell a story impossible for AAA studios.
*Demo music by Benjamin Borthwick, trailer music by Noah Choi

Thank you
Unfortunately, I have made the difficult decision to cease development of The Betweenlands. I greatly enjoyed working on this game, and I wish I could have seen it through to the end, as I still had so much to share through it. However, my personal circumstances made it unfeasible to continue, and I had to accept that it's time to move on. I have just released a small patch for the demo, but there are no content changes. Unity has told all developers to re-release applications due to a vulnerability discovered, so the update only fixes this issue. Expect to see lots of other games doing this. I will most likely not be updating the demo any further nor releasing a full version. While I may be done with The Betweenlands, I am certainly not done developing games, and I am actively working on a new project that I will have more news on in the near future. It's very very different from The Betweenlands, but I'm super excited about it and I hope you'll like it. Stay updated on my socials, https://bsky.app/profile/yorigames.bsky.social and https://x.com/YoriGamesStudio. I guess Mori will have to remain stuck on The Core a while longer...Maybe one day she'll get her wings.Read full article on Community Announcements (Yori Games)Patch NotesOfficial
The Betweenlands Demo EagleCon Update
As promised, here is the update to The Betweenlands Demo. I showed this version off at EagleCon this weekend, and I'm so glad so many people seemed to love it! We got a small speedrunning community going by the end, although I still hold the record by a large margin hehe. https://i.imgur.com/tLEmztq.jpeg With this demo update, I will return to mostly working on the full game, so the demo might not be updated again (at least no major updates). I know there are still a few bugs in this version (like the fog, grappling crumbling stone), but I want to move on and tell the full story of Mori and her world. There's so much I've learned from working on this demo that I want to start applying to the full game. For a bit of a teaser, here's some info on what I plan the final game to look like. First of all, it will be much much bigger, with each major area being at least as big as this entire demo. The areas will also be much less linear, allowing for more exploration and environmental storytelling. Speaking of which, there will be a much larger focus on the story with more characters and dialogue and lore. Anyway, here are the precise patch notes: Audio: New music by Benjamin Borthwick! Pulley sound effects Crumbling stone sound effects Some ambient sound effects Grappling sound bug fixed https://i.imgur.com/CaTocpR.png Graphics: Background art improved Lots of particle effects Dynamic fog Post processing Glowing crystals Bigger checkpoint flags Various sprites improved 2 Dialogue portraits added, others tweaked Grapple and pulley rope texture https://i.imgur.com/Ghbu1Ux.png Gameplay: Completely reworked Morewell area Added special camera zones to some Greenwall areas Made the "Greenwall Hell" area more forgiving Minor level tweaks all over the place Option to detach grapple with jump input Option to automatically enable new checkpoints Remappable controls Reset (respawn) button https://i.imgur.com/QmUP4jj.png UI: Death counter (enabled in options) Speedrun timer (enabled i...Read full article on Community Announcements (Yori Games)AnnouncementsOfficial
Brand New Demo Available!
After a great showcase at WreckCon last weekend, I'm excited to release my new demo here on Steam! If you played the old version, this one is totally different, focusing much more on the actual grappling hook gameplay and much less on the story. I made this version to give people more of an idea of what the main gameplay will look like, instead of just showcasing the beginning of the game and story. In fact, this new demo is not part of the actual canon story at all, it's all just or fun! It's still definitely a work in progress, and I will likely be releasing an update in the coming weeks. Some notable new features include: Controller support (still a bit wonky in menus) 4 distinct areas New platforming mechanics New characters More intuitive controls More intuitive level designs A lot more gameplay In the next update, expect these features: Controls remapping Graphical improvements Customizable options Better controller support Improved sound effects Speedrunning tools Quality of life improvements Music?! Lots of bug fixes Lots of level improvements I'm still hard at work developing this game, and I'm growing more and more belief in this project every day. I've done a bit of speedrunning for this version of the demo, and my best time so far is 1 minute 2 seconds (measured from first input to when the screen goes completely white at the end). I know there are still a lot of time saves possible, so try and beat me before the update comes and the category closes forever!Read full article on Community Announcements (Yori Games)
