Devlog 4: Release Timing Update + Game & World Structure
Before we get into the fun part of this devlog, we’d like to first address the fact that it is nearing the end of 2026 and Blighted still doesn’t have an official release date. The team has been working hard (and growing!) but we feel we still need a bit more time to polish and tune the game before launch. With this in mind, we’ve decided to shift our release to 2027. We appreciate your patience, and while we will have more news in the new year, we have one more really cool dev update before 2026 wraps that we think you'll want to keep an eye out for.. 👀In the meantime, let’s talk about navigating the world of Blighted! It might look terribly distorted and disconnected, but that’s just the Blight tearing reality apart a little bit.Getting anything done around here means carefully exploring your surroundings, meeting new people and avoiding skydiving buzzards. Here to talk more about the structure of Blighted’s world is Drinkbox designer Chris Brady!-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-The LevelsIn Blighted, you’ll navigate a series of large, interconnected levels as you hunt down the fearsome Memory Bandits. Each level is lovingly (and sometimes deviously) handcrafted to offer a range of challenges and secrets. As you work your way through each area, you’ll obtain permanent upgrades to strengthen your character and ultimately face off against your main targets in exciting boss fights. While you navigate the unique challenges of each level, you’ll have a number of chances to catch your breath as you reach new checkpoints in the form of Memory Trees and open up shortcuts leading back to them. At Memory Trees you can take a rest, upgrade your character, or customize your current equipment. You can also fast travel back to Watcher’s Peak.Watcher’s PeakNow you might be wondering what this peak is and what the deal is with all the watching. Well, Watcher’s Peak is your home camp in Blighted. Here, you ca...Read full article on Community Announcements (j.davis.2895)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog 3: Combat Design
Put on your fighting trousers, it’s time for another devlog! Here at Drinkbox, we love making combat systems that push you out of your comfort zone, while also helping you build your own fighting style.Blighted features our latest flavor of combat, and here to give you a taste is our Lead Designer, Ian Campbell!-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-Some people see Blighted’s isometric camera, the vibrant art style, and they think “oh, it’s a hack-and-slash thing.” Other people, they see the Stamina meter, the dodge roll, and they think “ah, it’s a soulslike thing.” WRONG! Both wrong... or, both right. Blighted’s combat is a spicy blend that mixes high-stakes souls-inspired combat with faster arcade action. On the “Action” side: Much of the player’s attack and defense is responsive and free-flowing. Fighting multiple enemies at once is not only possible but encouraged. Aggression is the key to decisive victory. On the “Souls” side: Combat is impactful, mistakes are costly, and key high-commitment attacks are needed to achieve victory. You’ve gotta learn to read and punish the enemies, as well as manage your Stamina, to win.Overall, it’s about fluid combat full of dodging, parrying, slashing and shooting -- punctuated by high-commitment, big-payoff counters and finishers -- where you have to master the enemies and make use of all of your moves to survive. The BasicsLet’s cover the overall moveset first. If you’re the kind of person to read a devlog like this, you’re probably familiar with the basics. You’ve got things like a four-hit combo, charge attack, dodge, parry, gun, and powerful mana moves. Many of your actions use Stamina, which you’ve gotta keep an eye on unless you wanna get punished.Parry especially is worth calling out. We know parries can be rewarding, but also really challenging, and we want ours to be as approachable as possible. Like many games, parrying an attack at just the right mo...Read full article on Community Announcements (j.davis.2895)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog 2: Meet Some NPCs
Hi Steam community! It’s time for another peek behind the curtain of the development of Blighted. We’re trying to build a gameplay-focused experience with this game, so we’re leaning into environmental storytelling and game mechanics to help communicate our narrative as much as possible. That said, you won’t be entirely alone in the game’s weird world. Here’s a quick look at a few of the non-playable characters you’ll encounter on your journey: -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-The Iron MuleOriginally enslaved by the Tycoon, the Mule used his cunning to sneak through secret passages around the world. He carries Blight, but he’s made the conscious decision to eat brains no more. The Iron Mule offers you advice from time to time at Watcher’s Peak. The ShamanA hermit of few words. The Shaman wears a mysterious helmet that protects its wearer's brains from being devoured after death. His knowledge of potions and rare ingredients could prove useful in your quest. The WidowThe Widow mourns the loss of her husband, whose brain is sought by bandits. She's worried that if she buries him, the bandits will dig him out. To protect him, she carries his corpse on her back. The Widow shares her expertise with weaponry as part of her husband's legacy. The Blind BanditNot just any bandit mind you, this is the Great Baltus, Chieftain of Bone Bridge, although perhaps not for long. The once-feared brain-stealing bandit is at a crossroads: without his vision, he'll be excommunicated from his gang–even devoured. That is the bandit's way. He’s taken a liking to you because you smell like a bandit.-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-'-…and that’s all we’re ready to share about NPCs for now!
