In Generation Exile, you'll turn-basedly expand cities and navigate humanity's future among stars within a vast generation ship. Manage limited resources to thrive in this challenging simulation experience from Sonderlust Studios.
About this game
Venture aboard humanity’s first and final generation ship, a desperate expedition teetering on the rim of collapse. You are the Caretaker- you must make the most of finite supplies and rally the remaining survivors to restore a sustainable society. Adapt to the strange ecological entity propagating on board, or succumb to ruin. It’s going to be a long journey, but no two journeys will be the same…
Plan your settlement wisely- Build detailed production chains to meet your society’s needs and sustain its development. Thoughtful structure layouts will maximize range-based resource distribution.
Upgrade production- Upgrade existing structures over time to improve efficiency, and repurpose resources as your settlement evolves. Progression brings discovery and new technologies to enhance your existing structures.
Restore the ship’s ecosystems- The ship was supposed to be an ark for numerous ecosystems from Earth, but the mistakes of the past have left them all near ruin. Develop systems for a circular society, rejecting excessive extraction and unsustainable growth.
Decisions and consequences- You’ll face choices at all stages of your journey, from designating individual task crews to settlement-wide rationing verdicts. Narrative events provide focused interactions with the characters, set in detailed vignettes of the ship’s environment. Decisions you make will directly impact structures, crew, and wellbeing within the ship- and ultimately determine the key challenges of your mission.
Dynamic cast of characters- Characters age, form families, and retain memories of events they witness under your leadership. Meet your comrades aboard the ship and follow their stories, spanning generations across hundreds of years.
Your unique story- The ship’s characters are procedurally generated at the start of every playthrough, resulting in a unique cast of NPCs. Crewmates’ distinct skills, abilities, and personality traits yield new narratives and strategies every game.
Build a sustainable society and revive the generation ship’s fragile ecosystems, using only what was brought with you to sustain the search for a new home. Your situation may be isolating, the crew unruly, challenges uncertain… but as Caretaker, you are Humanity’s last hope. How will your journey end?

GENERATION EXILE 1.0 IS LIVE!
Generation Exile's pre-1.0 journey reaches its destinationIt's almost difficult to believe but Generation Exile has reached the end of this phase of its journey. After a focused Early Access period and a much, much longer period of development, we are proud to bring to you all the version of the game that completes our vision of it.The game has advanced a lot in the last stretch with changes too numerous to list, but among the biggest are:Final "Planetfall" chapter of the game that puts all the player's skills to the test with dynamic objects that change every playthrough. This chapter follows the previous ones organically but can also be launched into directly as something of a "sandbox" challenge mode.Streamlining and refinement of systems players engage with the most, and addessing valuable feedback to improve these systems (goodbye Rubble, you will not be missed!).Many, many new structures.Additional narrative events.Bug fixes and polish galore! We also wanted to highlight something else that we're very proud that Generation Exile's 1.0 launch can be a part of....Earth Appreciation Fest!We wanted to launch during the 5th annual incarnation of this event, a collection and celebration of games that that showcase the wonders of nature and ecology, and the perils of failing to protect them. In addition to being a gathering of great games (which it is), this event has also partnered with the globally recognised charity Cool Earth for very important conservation work. Cool Earth's mission is to support local communities and Indigenous peoples in protecting ecosystems and fighting the climate crisis - and one that was recognized by leading charity analysis group Giving What We Can as “overall the most cost-effective climate change charity which can reliably reduce emissions without risk” - and Sonderlust is proud to support Cool Earth’s vital mission.Specifically, we encourage anyone who has purchased GenExile at its 35% off Earth Appreciation Fest / 1.0 launch discount...Read full article on Community Announcements (Nelsormensch)AnnouncementsOfficial
Generation Exile 1.0 Release Date - April 17
When we learned that the Earth Appreciation Fest Steam Event would be back starting April 17th, 2026, we knew this would be the ideal opportunity to bring Generation Exile into orbit for its 1.0 launch while also helping raise money for some incredibly important conservation work.If you aren't familiar with the event, it's a showcase of games that primarily feature on ecological themes, in forms both aspirational and cautionary (here's the 2025 edition). It's an excellent event and we're very excited to have GenExile's 1.0 launch be a part of it!Now to be sure, with the state of the industry being what it is and also... gestures broadly, it would be pretty disingenuous to claim that it's been easy for a small organisation like ours to swim against some pretty ferocious tides. But we'll talk about that more in the lead up to launch.Today is about celebration and sharing on tremendous gratitude to every player who jumped aboard GenExile during its Early Access period. The collaboration and feedback resulting from that was invaluable in getting the game ready for a full 1.0 launch, especially for a small team like ours. Truly, thank you. We're very much looking forward to everyone seeing what those efforts have yielded in GenExile's 1.0 launch on Friday, April 17th!Read full article on Community Announcements (Nelsormensch)
