About this game

Experience fast-paced shotgun carnage in this roguelite shooter like no other! Fight through hundreds of procedurally linked combat arenas, upgrade your fighting abilities and destroy an ever increasing number of robotic baddies along the way!

Replacing human prison guards with robots might seem like a good financial idea, but now they're in open metallic rebellion, it's time for you to step up. Their elusive creator, Dr Anderson, has entrusted you with a one-of-a-kind prototype: a shotgun capable of healing you when you cause injury to others. Oh, and it shoots grenades too. Tasked with culling the robotic menace (on account of you being a deranged psychotic criminal and all), her problem is now your problem. Get out there and wreck some havoc. I'm sure she can be trusted to hold up her end of the bargain, right?

  • Hundreds of procedurally linked combat arenas, bosses and upgrade rooms to fight through, with more on the way with every update. With millions of possible layouts, no two playthroughs will ever be the same

  • Face many unique bosses that will test your skills to the maximum

  • Upgrade your gear with six distinct abilities and optimise your build from high damage to chaining combos

  • Test your skills against over 25 enemy types, with even more added as the game evolves over time

  • An insane shotgun capable of launching grenades, self healing and unlimited ammo; just remember to keep it loaded. No need to conserve shells, get blasting!

  • An early 2000s aesthetic that blends simple, colourful grunge in a way only the olden days could

  • A wealth of secrets that will test your investigative skills and challenge you to put together the true story of the world around you. They could be hidden anywhere, even right here. Nowhere is off limits!

THE HEAVY METTLE UPDATE Is Here!

Greetings Convicts,Summer is dead and the heatwaves are over (deodorant companies are in shambles), and with it comes a new update! Put up your dukes, because the Boxer has had a serious redux, along with every single one of the hundreds of arenas in the game receiving an overhaul, and lots of other stuff besides. Fewer bullet points but more business then usual to get to, so here's what's new:NEW Boss Fight Redux: BoxerNEW All Current Arena OverhaulNEW Multiple Save SlotsNEW Arenas & Theme ConnectionsNEW Loading Screen TipsShotgun Reload ReworksAdditional Controller & Steam Deck SupportPlenty of Bug FixesLegsWhat a list! With round one out of the way, let's ring the bell and see what's up....BOSS REDUX: BOXERSTEP INTO A DEADLIER RINGRedesigned from the ground up to be punchier, fightier and more smashy, the whole fight has been overhauled to feature new mechanics, attacks and a new design. The Boxer also displays a troublesome new trait - his armour makes him completely invincible. Bit of a bummer. If only he had some way of exposing his soft delicate bits that you could exploit...he'll also berate you for the entire duration of your rapidly diminishing life. You'll also find yourself fighting him in a redesigned arena. More height variation and cover makes avoiding his new and reworked attacks manageable, though of course not easy. ALL ARENAS HAVE BEEN OVERHAULEDALL ARENAS HAVE BEEN REWORKED TO KICK YOUR ASS BETTERSince release, the gameplay loop of Breakout has changed somewhat. More of an emphasis on the 'bullet hell' aspects of dodging shots and enemies means that some of the arenas designed at launch no longer play as well as they could, so they've all been given a once over. Many have been remade from the ground up, others have had layout reworks or small changes, and all have had an art pass to make sure they're all pretty (in a grungy, ugly kind of way) next to each other.NEW ARENAS JOIN THE FIGHTAlongside the changes to current arenas, new places to test yo...

    NEW TRAILER & GAMEPLAY VIDEOS

STEAM STORE PAGE UPDATESIn the time since release (way back in January 2025!), lots of things have changed. We've been through 2 shotgun reworks, grenades are now a thing, over 10 new enemies have been added, I don't even know how many new arenas there are but it's a lot. A real lot. We got pickups, interactable buttons, UI overhauls, cutscenes, crates, barrels, over double the amount of music and a whole bunch of other stuff. This is great! I'm very pleased with how things are going and the support that's been shown for the game has been incredible, and has let me keep producing updates long after I thought I'd be able to. BUUUUUUUUUTThe trailer, which was originally made for the game's launch, is looking a little weathered by the years now. So it's time for something new!NEW TRAILER & GAMEPLAY VIDEOS FOR 2026New updates mean lots of changes. The original trailer has now been split into two parts; an animated short to give you the vibes of the game (you may recognise parts of this from the new Main Menu that dropped with the recent Summer Heat update), and a five minute long gameplay video that showcases what it's like to play the game. Well, what it's like to play at my sub-par skill level, of course. Please note the gameplay video shows content from the Summer Heat update, the most recent update as of writing this. More updates will be coming this year, and they'll have their own new arenas, features, enemies etc etc, so there may be even more content in the game then is seen when watching this!Check out both new videos below!OFFICIAL 2026 TRAILERGAMEPLAY DEMO 2026

    FREE DEMO AVAILABLE NOW!

Greetings Convicts,Today is a good day, because not only is it the release of the Summer Heat Update, a free demo is now available to download from the Breakout store page!DRM-FREE DEMO AVAILABLE NOW!THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREEYep, you read that right, not only is the demo free to download, but it's also DRM free, so you can do whatever you want with it. Copy it, reupload it elsewhere, hack it, mod it, pull it open and see all the undoubtedly dodgy leftovers that are hiding in there unused (I'm sure there's at least some). Go nuts, it's all yours to do as you wish with.Contained within is the entire intro portion of the game, including the first 40 rooms, the tutorial horde boss and two Cell theme bosses. Also included is a small selection of rooms and collectables to give you a full taste of the real thing. Oh, and you'll be using the MkII shotgun, so no grenades here. We can't have everything for free!Angry about free things? Find something game breaking? Want to rub in my face that you're making a Fitgirl repack? Feel free to contact the email robo-goblins at breakoutsupport@proton.me or post in the discussions!

THE SUMMER HEAT UPDATE Is Here!

Greetings Convicts,It's finally summer! Good golly, it's warm. What better way to celebrate then with hot flames and cool drinks? The new Firestarter enemy is ready to turn up the thermostat and with it are a bunch of other summer-ish bits and bobs. As always, we have lots of new happenings to look forward to including:NEW Enemy: FirestarterNEW Pickup: Health StimNEW Interactable: Vending MachinesNEW ArenasNEW MusicNEW Visual Overhaul of our ProtagonistOverhauled Main Menu VisualsRobodex UI ReworksBalancing ChangesPlenty of Bug FixesBONUS: Secret Stuff...The sun is out, the Hawaiian shirts are on, and it’s time to feel the heat! Lets take a closer look...NEW ENEMY: FIRESTARTERTEAM ROBOT IS NOW OFFICIALLY PACKING HEATOperating at a temperature that puts the Australian outback to shame, the Firestarter is the best in making their particular corner of the world somewhere you'd rather not be. Two arm mounted flamethrowers are willing to roast and toast anything that comes vaguely near them, which usually happens to be you. Unlucky. They might only deal a moderate amount of damage, but when grouped up they'll quickly boil you alive.HAZARD PERCEPTION AWARENESSThe Firestarter also introduces us to a new mechanic. Those flamethrowers need a lot of fuel to keep going, and the thing about back-mounted flammable fuel is that when the robot who's back it's attached to explodes, it REALLY explodes. Be careful getting up close when one of them goes bang, because you'll soon learn about this particular chemical reaction the hard way. Oh, and that doesn't just go for you; other bots are just as susceptible, if not more so, to the blast.NEW PICKUP: HEALTH STIM"RULE 39, NEVER SAY NO TO BACTA"To go alongside the recently(ish) introduced Adrenaline Injectors, you can now find Medical Stims around the prison ship in both crates and vending machines (more on that later!). Picking one up restores a set amount of health. Maybe you're just so good at the game that you're already at full hea...

THE GREAT BALLS OF FIRE UPDATE Is Here!

Greetings Convicts,Grenades. Explosives. Frags. Pineapples. Hot Potatoes. Call them what you like, everybody loves those small balls of boom. You know what's good about grenades? They explode. You know what's good about robots? They explode! What a match made in heaven. With this update, you can look forward to a bunch of new features:NEW Pickups: Grenades (a few of them, actually)NEW Shotgun Designs, Animations, SFX and EffectsNEW Music, Almost Double the Amount of TracksCutscene Reworks and Touch UpsBalancing ChangesPlenty of Bug FixesA Happy Accident Feature...Stay Tuned to the End for MoreWow, that's a lotta damage! Lets take a closer look...NEW PICKUP: GRENADESSAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!Some idiot has been stuffing crates around the prison with grenades. Who? Jury is still out, but I'm sure you'll want to thank them. Four new grenade types are available, one for each area currently available. Break some crates, pick them up, and launch them from the new and improved Shotgun MkIII's launcher. you can even hold three of the same type at once, just don't think too hard about where you're storing them.FRAG GRENADESAh, what a classic. you throw it, it whistles through the air, and then a big boom happens wherever it happens to end up. Oh, that's right by your feet? Very unfortunate. Regardless, these are as close to your bog standard high explosive as you'll get. They've got a big round green casing with a red stripe around them to make sure they stand out amongst all the robot debris. They'll be found amongst most rooms in the Cells areas.SHOCK GRENADESRobots and electricity are a bit like me and cheese; a small amount is good, but too much and it'll spell disaster. These small batteries emit a highly dangerous static field for a few seconds on detonation, making for great area denial as bots are helplessly zapped upon entering into the radius. With bright blue tubes on a silver shell, they crackle with arcing electric to make sure you can spot them. They're fou...
