About the Game

Ratatan is a rhythm roguelike action game that combines rhythm games and side-scrolling action, with online co-op gameplay supporting up to 4 players.

An intense battle unfolds with over 100 characters fighting in a massive melee.

Defeat the enemies by riding the rhythm of Ratatan’s catchy, toe-tapping soundtrack in this delightful, heartfelt adventure!

Welcome to Rataport!

In the vast and tranquil sea, there is an island as lively as a toy box. The name is "Rataport" On the island, a strange animal-like creature called Ratatan lives happily with their friends. Despite their different appearances and personalities, they share a common dream. Which is go to “The Everafter". And meet "The Goddess" who is said to live in there. As heroes who carry the hope of all, the Ratatans embark on a journey to The Everafter. No matter how many times they failed, they will never give up and dreamt of meeting her one day.

Rhythm action

Feel the beat and use rhythm sequences in time to order your Cobuns in the direction you want them to go.

Since the Ratatans can be moved freely, your judgement to decide where to give orders, where to position the ratatan, and when to retreat is critical.

2D animation

We want to emphasize the unique performance of 2D animation and put lively personality into the action.

Ratatan Development Log #8 Kickstarter Begins

Ratatan Development Log #8 Kickstarter BeginsIn the previous article, I talked about how we first introduced Ratatan to the world at BitSummit. Then, the day we had been working toward finally arrived. The launch of our Kickstarter campaign. It was the moment we would present everything we had built over the previous three years to players around the world for the very first time.Over the next thirty days, the Ratatan project would truly begin its journey. The Kickstarter PageKickstarter Page https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ratata-arts/ratatan/descriptionOur Kickstarter page was much more than a simple game description. It brought together everything we had built up to that point. The gameplay concept. The visual concept. The UX Video. It became the place where we introduced Ratatan to players around the world.Throughout the process, we received tremendous support and guidance from DANGEN Entertainment. For that reason, rather than explaining Kickstarter best practices, I'd like to focus on the thinking behind how we designed our page. What We Wanted Players to Feel FirstThe single most important element on the page was our characters.Ratatan features a large amount of hand-drawn 2D animation.Because of that, we wanted players to experience the characters in motion rather than through still images alone.Of course, explaining the gameplay was important. But even more importantly, we wanted people to think:"Who are these characters?""Their movement looks incredibly satisfying."Creating that first emotional reaction was our highest priority.Don't Hold Anything BackLooking back today, I think Ratatan's Kickstarter page contained far more information than many other projects.Part of that was simply because we had already created a significant amount of artwork and assets. But more importantly, we believed in one principle:Show as much as possible, as early as possible.Game development doesn't end when you finish building the game. You need to let players see it early, gather reac...

    Ratatan Development Log #7 BitSummit

Ratatan Development Log #7 BitSummitIn the previous article, I talked about the importance of creating the UX Video for our Kickstarter campaign. From this point on, preparations for Kickstarter began in earnest.Simply making a great game would not be enough for Kickstarter to succeed. When should we announce it?Where should players first discover it?And how could we turn that initial interest into Kickstarter support? We realized that developing a marketing strategy would be just as important as developing the game itself.Working Backwards from KickstarterThe first decision we made was when to launch Kickstarter. We targeted the end of July 2023.With summer vacation beginning and numerous gaming events taking place during that period, we believed it would be the perfect opportunity to introduce Ratatan to as many people as possible.Once we had that deadline, everything else could be planned backwards.Preparing the Kickstarter campaign.Registering trademarks.Opening a corporate bank account. And all the other preparations required to bring the game into the world.Step by step, we worked our way toward launch.Choosing the TitleOne of the earliest decisions we had to make was the game's title.Kickstarter would introduce the project to players all over the world. That meant we needed to secure trademarks not only in Japan, but internationally as well.In game development, it's common to keep using a working title until the game is close to release. However, because we were preparing for Kickstarter, we needed to decide on the official title much earlier. Our original candidate was "Rattatta."Unfortunately, trademark issues made that impossible. The result was the name Ratatan.Around the same time, we also established Ratata Arts, the company that would operate the Kickstarter campaign. The name reflected our goal of building more than just a single game.We wanted to create and nurture the Ratatan IP for years to come.An Opportunity Called BitSummitAround this time, we were accept...

    Ratatan Development Log #6

Ratatan Development Log #6The UX VideoIn the previous article, I explained how Kickstarter became our first major milestone, marking the point where Ratatan evolved from an idea into a real project. However, at that stage, all we had was a concept. The game itself didn't exist yet.The reality was simple:We couldn't raise funding. So when does a game become ready for funding? For Ratatan, the answer was the UX Video.A Concept Alone Cannot Raise FundingKickstarter is a crowdfunding platform. However, we never viewed Kickstarter as simply a place to raise money. One of the unique challenges of game development is that you need funding before the game is finished. That means you can't present a completed product to potential supporters or investors.Instead, what supporters, publishers, and investors are really evaluating is:"Can this game actually be completed?""Can this team deliver on its promise?"This applies not only to Kickstarter, but also to venture capital fundraising and publisher negotiations.Investment decisions are made the moment people can clearly picture what the game will become. In that sense, Kickstarter isn't unique.Rather, it is one of the clearest examples of how game funding works across the industry. What We Feared MostAs we prepared for Kickstarter, there was one thing we feared more than anything else.It wasn't failing to reach our funding goal. What truly frightened us was failing to finish the game.Once people place their trust in you,"We're sorry—we couldn't finish it."was the one outcome we absolutely had to avoid. That became our highest priority. How could we make sure we would be able to complete the game? Our answer was simple. We needed to build the game far enough that we ourselves could clearly see the finished experience.Only then would we be ready to ask others to support us.That, we believed, was the real first step toward raising funding. The UX Video as Our GoalIn February 2023, we officially kicked off preparations for Kickstarter.Stretch goal...
