About this game

You play as Jonathan Harker, Dracula’s real estate agent, completing work tasks while exploring the castle, speaking with its inhabitants, and hacking into computers.

BYTE is a tactics RPG that adapts the classic novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker, with an emphasis on the themes of queerness and technology.

Jonathan Harker, a young real estate agent from New York City, is summoned to Detroit, Oregon in 1990 to help a mysterious Count Dracula purchase a collection of properties in NYC. Jonathan's proficiency with new technologies like fax machines, telephones, and the internet helped him rise quickly at his firm and earn this assignment, but the closer Jonathan gets to the castle, the wearier he grows.

BYTE's story is told through visual novel scenes that use a mixture of in-world and surreal 3D art and full-motion video to accompany the text of the story.

Technology permeates BYTE both in its world and in its presentation and the game is a celebration and exploration of early digital computer technology.

At the castle, Jonathan finds that the Count has already equipped his castle with an internet connection, fax lines, and solar power to speed up his work. Despite this, Jonathan finds more friction than expected, as it seems nearly everything in the castle is hidden behind some form of password protection.

BYTE features grid-based tactics battles that happen when Jonathan needs to hack into a computer.

Combat involves completing tasks rather than fighting enemies. Tasks can include collecting data, getting through firewalls, installing software, and more.

Mysterious circumstances bring all of Jonathan's friends and even his fiancé to the castle with him. It doesn't take long for Dracula to demonstrate interests in some of Jonathan's closest friends, leading Jonathan, among others to grow suspicious.

Queerness colors Dracula from its first page to its last. BYTE re-examines the queer identity of the novel through modern looks at gender, sexuality, and desire.

    BYTE Out Now!

At long last, BYTE is out now for PC and Mac!After working on the game for over three years, I have reached the end of the road with BYTE and have released it. Initially the plan was just to release on PC but in the past month or so I also added support for Macs running on Apple Silicon processors. Mac support has also been added to the demo, so you can check out the first month of BYTE on Macs now as well.To go along with the release, BYTE will be 25% off for the next week, so get it while it's hot!To celebrate BYTE's release, I have myself been thinking about my process with this game over the years and have written up a retrospective of my time with the game. It covers the scattered beginnings of BYTE, all the way back in 2018, my core period of development, from May of 2022 until now, and my analysis of how it turned out and what I want to do in the future. If you want to read about this, check it out here!I won't drag this out any longer than it needs to be, since you're not here to read me talking about BYTE, you're here to play it! Check it out now!

BYTE is in Tiny Teams this week!

Today marks the start of this year's Tiny Teams showcase! Tiny Teams is an annual Steam event/showcase to highlight games made by solo developers and small teams, and BYTE is featured this year's edition. :)BYTE is currently in the Steam event, which you can check out here: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/TinyTeams2025BYTE will also be live-streamed on the Yogscast YouTube and Twitch channels, in addition to the Tiny Teams Steam page on Saturday between 5pm and 8pm BST!Tiny Teams will be streaming games from the showcase all week, so don't forget to check out the other games as well. You can find the streams here:http://twitch.tv/yogscasthttps://www.youtube.com/@yogscasthttps://store.steampowered.com/sale/TinyTeams2025To celebrate the start of Tiny Teams and continue my ramp up to releasing BYTE fully, I have just put out a new version of the demo (likely my last update before the release) that features a handful of fixes and a coupe of new features.Hot New MusicAfter two years, BYTE finally has more music! Five new tracks have been into the game and are interspersed throughout the demo. In addition to two new combat tracks, there are two new ambient tracks and a new substory/cutscene track. Play through the demo to hear it all!Resolution SettingsSince the demo's initial release, BYTE's resolution has been automatically determined by the game, setting the output resolution to closest the game can get to your monitor's resolution and then halving the resolution if your monitor's is high enough. In the interest of usability, readability, and fun, you can now manually override the in-game resolution! Aside from being able to change the game's render resolution, you can also manually enable/disable the half-resing, so you can customize the look of BYTE's rendering to suit your tastes.Keep an eye out for more BYTE updates and don't forget to stay tuned for the full release on October 1st, 2025!

    BYTE Release Date Announcement!

Release Date! It’s Steam Next Fest, which means that over here (in my apartment) it’s time to celebrate! The days tick by and my deadline to release BYTE draws closer but luckily I’m right on track. To kick off Steam Next Fest I’m thrilled to announce that the official release date for BYTE will be October 1st, 2025!Believe it or not, I’ve been targeting an October 6th release day for about a year and a half at this point, but development of BYTE is so on track that I decided to move it up a few days so I can start Halloween month with a bang. The first five weeks of BYTE are all that have been publicly available from the game for somewhere in the ballpark of 19 months at this point, so suffice it to say that I am beyond excited to finally show the world the rest of this game.Despite showing everyone these first five weeks, I truly believe that BYTE only gets better as the days roll on, so wishlist the game now and stay tuned for that final release on October 1st!Next Fest (and FMV)!As I mentioned, BYTE is in Steam Next Fest right now, which also means that a new demo is available. The demo contains the same five weeks and core content as the previous version, but to coincide with this announcement, I just pushed a minor update to the demo that adds in some full-motion video that I recorded recently.I use the FMV to add more flavor into the diorama scenes that I added in the previous update and to replace the cutscenes that were currently still images (just the intro scene in the demo). The video was all shot on location in various parts of Oregon (mostly Portland), so rest-assured, you’re getting an authentic Oregonian experience :).Aside from that, some other minor changes have been implemented including a redesign of some of the battle arenas and general bug fixes. Stay tuned for more updates on BYTE and happy Next Fest!

    BYTE Demo Update!

The BYTE Demo just got its first update! As work continues on BYTE, I just pushed a new update to showcase a couple of the recent additions that I have finished up. These are the new things to check out! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44984738/9e8d85fb8c528e792e762c0d7e8f9db5ace86973.png Cutscenes As part of a push to make BYTE's cutscenes more cinematic and engaging, all major scenes in the game utilize the camera angle system that was previously on display in just a few core scenes. Additionally, the camera system has been built out to allow for more kinds of camera shots as well! For the journal cutscenes, there is now a new "diorama" system that provides 3D artwork instead of just the plain image that was used before. This new system is on display in the scene at the end of July 7th and the final scene in the demo. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44984738/824f0cc3c7b4573b03c96f8365c599c6425936e8.png Exercise Exercise is important for everyone, including realtors! Now in the Solarium is a yoga mat that Jonathan can use to work out. Doing so increases his max MP, introducing more MP management into the game. Dream Journals A second "Lucy's Dream Journal" sequence was added towards the end of the demo. This continues the story from the first Dream Sequence and introduces new a new character. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44984738/d1baea63fbee6a2d6d6dc32080c11f6ea3aa0a5e.png
