New Dimensions
Linux FirstHypno is now being developed as Linux-first. The entire stack has been moved to a Cachy OS workstation, the Holo Deck used for Hypno Tournaments is running on a slim Cachy OS build, while the entire game has been optimized for Steam Deck running Steam OS since the very beginning. The reasons for this decision are equally of ethical and practical nature. We cannot in good conscience continue to rely on proprietary operating systems that are increasingly intrusive and bloated with features that are often being forced upon the user without any prior consent, while implementing aggressive data harvesting algorithms and unreliable codebase generated by LLMs that often introduce system-wide vulnerabilities and instabilities.Holo DeckHypno originally started as an audio-visual live performance tool - a crossover between DJing and VJing intended for big stages of electronic music parties and festivals. But then we thought, what if we turned it into a game and brought it to masses? That thought defined the development of Hypno up until several months ago, when an opportunity to bring the original concept back into the picture appeared. In case you didn't know, Hypno is being developed in Koh Phangan, Thailand. A tropical island known mostly for its Full Moon Party with EDM venues lined along its epic Haad Rin Nok Beach but also with its own less commercial techno and trance scene scattered all around the island. We believe Hypno could thrive in this environment so we rented an entire building where we're putting together an immersive experience chamber designed around what we're calling a Holo Deck. It's essentially a custom made table that implements several optical concepts to deliver a unique social experience that we also intend to use for our parallel project here on the island. For Hypno, there are several use cases:Duel with two players facing each otherArena with up to four players at the Holo DeckSolo play facing large scale projection screenPerformance mode ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Hypnos)AnnouncementsOfficial
Demo v0.7
The last time we had a public demo up was for version 0.2, but we've been running multiple closed playtests for every major release during this time and based on often overwhelming feedback of our playtesters, we've implemented a great deal of features and quality of life improvements that eventually resulted in a format we believe is now suitable for public eye.The LadderThe bread and butter of this demo is the ladder - a collection of 20 upgrades that unlock special perks and game content. Each upgrade has its own condition that needs to be met in order to unlock the perk and move to the next level.Qualifying RoundFor experienced players, there's the qualifying round. The first game of the session, that can serve as a shortcut to higher levels, so you don't have to go step by step every time you launch the game, as the progress doesn't carry over between sessions. The AvatarThe ultimate goal of this demo is to unlock the Avatar. Apart from a fancy particle based Avatar that dances to the rhythm when you Grind, there's one perk experienced players might be especially interested in. The third eye. It follows the rotation of player's cubes and displays a combination that is the shortest route to a Zone Sync, which is an advanced game mechanic that yields the highest score.Walker PreviewsThere are now four Walker classes, each with four sub-classes inside their own fractals with their own sounds. Once you unlock all of them, you can freely rotate between every single one of them and enjoy the visuals that are part of the game modes not available in this demo. It's especially cool in VR ;-)Playtest TokenFor players interested in the full Hypno experience, we suggest to enroll in our playtest program. The first step is to unlock the Playtest Token by scoring above 100k in the Grind mode.DiscordEven if you don't make it to 100k, we still want to see you pop up on our Discord so you can stay in touch for the latest updates and special events.Hypno on DiscordRead full article on Community Announcements (Hypnos)AnnouncementsOfficial
v0.7 Preview
V0.7 Preview is technically a v0.65, but since some of the systems intended for v0.7 were already in a functional, or at least a preview state, we decided to throw them in the mix as a sneak peek. Major Gaming Upgrades Players can now manually drop charges with a new dedicated button (left trigger or left Alt) Failed drop resets the speed straight to 0, as opposed to going one speed lower in the previous versions There is a whole new skillcheck phase that unlocks after a successful drop, while holding the trigger button After passing required amount of skillchecks (speed dependent), players will get to enter the Walker cockpit preview. Walking mechanics is planned for the next version. Classes are now even more specialized -- Hunter automatically drops charges in small intervals and can only progress with exactly one charged cube -- Empress & Mystic don't automatically drop charges, players have to do this manually -- Empress can jump either one or two zones forward, with each of the charged cubes independently Bugfixes & Improvements VR optimized. All visual systems have been adjusted for VR experience and are fully immersive now Corner cubes now have charge indicators inside of them that help especially Empress and Mystic classes to plan ahead charge drop combinations Skillcheck phase has its own new circular grid Input System have been reworked to a more elegant yet robust solution, but only on Windows, Linux build intended primarily for Steam Deck had to be reverted to the old version Unplugging and reconnecting a gamepad mid-session, or simply switching to keyboard should now work without issues Charges no longer staying in the grid after the clock runs out in Grind mode Bloom of the sequencer has been capped and is also resetting to init values between sessionsRead full article on Community Announcements (Hypnos)AnnouncementsOfficial
Hypno v0.6
Not much of the visual aspects of the game remained from the last version, which is why we needed to completely refresh the Steam Page too, but let's take it one update at a time. Three Playable Classes Hunter, Empress and Mystic. They exist on another layer - or dimension, from the main avatar, which needs to be charged first, in order to open the portal to access them. Classes have their distinct play style that defines how players can navigate through the game world. The moves of each class are rooted in DJing principles so each playstyle can be thought of as a different DJing style that will result in a different musical experience. Apart from that, classes also respond differently to the sequencer beats, which also makes playing classes a distinct visual experience. Visual Sequencer The game now features a visual representation of every track in a form of a dedicated sequencer line. There are four of them per instrument - one for each zone, with each of four instruments having their own dedicated corner. Progressions are now also visually signalled to the player by resetting and initializing the whole sequencer once a progression is invoked. Tailor Made Music A brand new set was designed for this version with the aim to keep players in the desired vibe longer and make transitions between zones smoother. This set was also designed with Mystic in mind to specifically suit its play style. Skyboxes Game backgrounds are now fully immersive skyboxes, which - together with converting the rest of the scene into properly scaled three-dimensional space is a major step towards VR support, which we believe will take Hypno experience to a whole new level. Playtest We're currently warming everything up for a limited playtest session, planned for the end of April, so if you're interested - and you're more then welcome, please head over to our Discord channel where we'll be organizing the whole thing from. Hypno v0.5
With the introduction of animated, particle based avatar in the previous version came also the desire to make it upgradable - by the way players mix and combine their tracks. The first sneak peek is available in the latest media refresh that features four types of armor. The idea though, is to make the armor fully modular so the process of upgrading the avatar becomes as creative as possible. Another major upgrade relates to the grid, which has been further reduced to simple dots, that aesthetically match the particle systems used elsewhere, but also bring several technical perks along with it. The first one is further reduced hardware requirements. Hypno is already running at stable 60 fps on the OG Steam Deck, further optimizations will thus make it playable on wider range of mobile devices, including smart phones. The second perk is that the grid can now be fully animated. First tests showed drastic effects of such an animated grid. In fact, the effects were so severe it completely oversaturated the already demanding visual field of the game, so we decided to turn it off for now until we find a more comfortable way to utilize such technology. We will be handing out first playtest access soon, so if you're interested in laying your hands on the current version of Hypno, please head over to our Discord channel. Until next time.
