About this game
If we accept that our Reality may be a Simulation, then shouldn't we accept that our simulations (games) may be somebody else's Reality?
Carceri is a fun, meta story about the Programs that run modern society. They're alive and need your help, human, because in Carceri, you aren't a Character, you are YOU, the person at your PC, reading these words. This game's world is the Programs' Reality, and you're just visiting.
Think of Carceri as a virtual vacation to a technicolor, living landscape; a chill, first-person narrative/exploration experience. You'll discover gorgeous, interconnected zones while platforming, talking to cute NPCs, finding secrets, and taking pictures with a heavily upgradable Camera, one that can wildly distort the world as you explore (this isn't a Photo Mode, it's you as the game's Art Director)!
Carceri is a 2-4 hour game made by a single human; a spiritual successor to ULTRAWORLD EXODUS. This is no Dark Souls, as anyone can complete the narrative portion, and there's plenty to find afterwards (like an in-game philosophy podcast...about the Simulation Hypothesis, as it relates to videogames. Don't worry, it's optional).
Works on Steamdeck, and, buying the game gives you the 41 song original soundtrack!
Carceri is quietly unlike anything you've played before. It's hard to explain (and sell), but it's absolutely worth the world's most precious resource: your time. Enjoy!

Carceri, the demo!
Today, I've released a demo for Carceri! Now there's no excuse to skip my solo indie game...well, unless you're just not interested, I suppose that's still valid. However, how could you NOT be interested in a cozy, first-person exploration/narrative adventure set in a technicolor world of vibes; featuring cute characters, a killer soundtrack, and a camera that let's you control every aspect of the game's visuals? If you enjoy the demo and decide to purchase the full game, your save file transfers, so you can pick up where you left off.Speaking of the full game, Carceri is 20% off for the next week (8/15-8/24)!And, for the three of you that already have the game, I've made numerous tweaks/fixes throughout, in addition to some extra polish, to prep for this demo. This is the final update to Carceri (outside of critical bug fixes), so the only thing left to say is:Au revoir, Visitors!P.S. Carceri is no longer called Carceri Zero, though the content from that update is still in-game.Read full article on Community Announcements (Neon Serpent LLC)AnnouncementsOfficial
Carceri is now Carceri Zero!
As a AAA vet (Metroid Prime 4, Remnant, Crysis 3), I assumed that gave me a tiny leg up, and my solo-dev indie game, Carceri, might do OK... Boy was I wrong! It flopped so deeply, so profoundly, that it's honestly hilarious. And it seems I have a lot of company. In our Age of Infinite Options, most Indie games fail. There's simply not enough time (or money) to allow all games to succeed, or even get noticed. Consider how saturated we are in 2024 (per Steam DB): - There's almost 100k games on Steam now (98,298) More than half were released in the past 4 years (53,360) - 15,257 games were released on Steam this year (through Oct) That's more than the first 11 years of Steam combined! (11,323) - That's roughly 1,525 games a month, 350 a week, or 50 a day. More games release per month than the first 6 years of Steam combined! (1,383) - Also, consider the saturation of TV shows, movies, books, podcasts, streaming content, etc that compete for our time/money. In this free for all, a few games win the Indie Lottery, while the rest hold a losing ticket. They not just fail, but are completely unknown, like Carceri. Is it good? Is it interesting? Nobody knows, because nobody's tried it. Hell, nobody's even heard of it. So, to honor the absurdity and madness of it all, I made a trailer/music video dedicated to the thousands of unknown games out there facing the same fate, but might just deserve more than Zero. And in that same spirit, Carceri is now renamed Carceri Zero. Yes, it also has new content, but with zero players, who would even know? To coincide with this, Carceri Zero is 20% off from Nov 4 to the 11th!Read full article on Community Announcements (Neon Serpent LLC)Press Coverage
Carceri is a "chaotic Art-toy" from a former Metroid Prime 4 dev, inspired by Piranesi
Carceri is a fizzy and kaleidoscopic, first-person "chaotic Art-toy" in which you explore/hallucinate an island resort that's also a concentration camp ("carceri" is Italian for prison) for sentient computer programs. Out sometime in May, it's the work of James Beech, who describes himself as "an on-again, off-again AAA veteran" with credits on Metroid Prime 4, Remnant: From the Ashes, and Crysis 3. The environments take hefty influence from Carceri d'invenzione, a series of prints created in the 18th century by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, whose name has become a byword for impossible spaces.
