Indie, RPG, Strategy · More free games
Embark on a turn-based card-game brawler where your choices shape your deck. In Crownbreakers by Sharkbomb Studios, strategize your moves to topple magical city tyrants with champions and cards.
About this game
Crownbreakers is a fast-paced card game of revolutionary violence. This spiritpunk world is ruled by tyrants that grow fat by stealing souls just to grind them into profit. Fight against necromantic criminals and demonic billionaires. Break the soul trade and free your city. Crownbreakers combines turn-based tactics with deck-building mechanics in one snappy package.
Use your champion's actions and your cards together to control the battlefield. Push enemies into the perfect position for your area of effect abilities or chain explosive barrels together to pulverize the opposition. Master this to make the most of your abilities.
Each turn the battlefield advances, uncovering new obstacles, new enemies but also new rewards: rare cards for your deck, powerful relics to enable new synergies, and stickers to add to your cards. Build your deck and keep pushing forward. Only the strong can make it to the boss.
Add Stickers to create powerful, custom cards. With stickers you can increase a card's damage, add new abilities or even extend a card's area of effect. Limits are for other people. And the right sticker on the right card can make or break a run.
Complete quests and return with loot from your battles. Share you resources with the people of the city and get to know its colorful characters. Before your return for another run against the city's tyrants.
A WORLD OF MAGIC AND OFFICE JOBS
Step into a world where modern technology and magic coexist. People commute to work and buy their drinks at the franchise coffee shop on the corner while spirits bring technology alive and floating islands drift on invisible currents across the sky.
The truly dedicated can strengthen their soul and learn ways of using this magic to master mighty supernatural abilities. Unfortunately the rich and powerful know how to buy, steal or crush both magic and souls. All so they can hyper-charge their stranglehold on the world.
But you're not playing their game. You are ready to fight against their oppression. And you will break their crowns.

Partnership, Game Devs of Color, and demo update!
Hey friends!I’m excited to announce that today I have signed with a publisher: Firesquid! Why a Publisher? In short, while the developer makes the game, the publisher’s job is to make sure the game can reach as many players as possible. In this day and age, that’s no longer a necessity - many indies self-publish. However these are often larger teams or famous developers. So considering that I’m a solo developer (with freelance support) I’d rather invest my limited time building the game itself, instead of spending it on marketing, publishing, and distribution. Arguably important parts of making a game, but not things I am particularly good at. Which is why I decided to look for a partner to collaborate with and why I'm super happy I found Firesquid! Why Firesquid?Firesquid is an indie strategy game publisher that aims to support titles that modernize and revisit the genre. And I think Crownbreakers fits their vision perfectly! On top of that my communication with the entire Firesquid team has been excellent: timely, clear and supportive! I’m looking forward to our collaboration! What does that mean for Crownbreakers? From a development perspective not too much changes - I’ll keep working on the game as I have up until now. Except that now I will have access to the qualified Firesquid Q&A team to help me test the game. And together with Firesquid we will be able to localize the game to more languages than I had originally planned! And obviously the marketing and social media for the game will improve. You may have already noticed some more posts on Bluesky, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok recently! So look forward to more insights in and updates for Crownbreakers on your favorite channel! What else? GDOC Direct! The partnership announcement is not all! This week the Game Developers of Color expo runs, with its crown jewel: The GDOC Direct on 25th at 3pm pacific time! And you will be able to see a brand new Crownbreakers trailer then! And there’s even more? Yes, a Demo Update...Read full article on Community Announcements (Demozilla)Community & EventsOfficial

Subscribe now! Crownbreakers @ gamescom I had the great opportunity to show Crownbreakers at gamescom as part of the Indie Arena Booth. Managing the booth for five days of gaming was quite a lot of work, but there were so many lovely players coming by that I felt constantly energized. The overwhelming majority of players that sat down to play really enjoyed the game, even some that generally don’t like turn-based games ended up praising the snappy action feeling of the game! And some folks came back multiple times to try and beat the boss! While the voices from players were consistently positive, I’m always looking at the game with an eye towards improving it. While there were no big issues or problems, I wrote down almost 100 different small ideas how I could improve the game. None of these are big changes, but in aggregate they will help make the critical first 15 minutes of the game a much smoother experience. Introducing: KieranIn the last update I talked about the progress on the playable characters. We’ve now got eve...Read full article on Community Announcements (Demozilla)AnnouncementsOfficial
Filling the City with Life
Hi folks! It’s been quiet from me for a bit because I have been working hard. I do tend to focus so much on the game that I sometimes forget to keep you all updated. Especially after the successful Kickstarter ate up quite some of my time and I really wanted to knuckle down and work on the game. But I’m resurfacing again because there are plenty of fun things to talk about! Game EventsIf you’ve been paying attention, you might have noticed Crownbreakers being featured as part of TactiCon or that it’s been showcased in the Games Composed In Germany Steam event! But wait, there’s more:Crownbreakers will be playable at the Indie Arena Booth at gamescom, alongside a stunning lineup of fellow indies! If you’re be attending gamescom, come by! You can find me in Hall 10.2, Booth F010 - E019, Stand 25. And who knows, I might be bringing a little merch for you… Character DesignThe final version of Crownbreakers will offer four playable characters, each with their own deck, abilities and synergies. If you’ve played the demo you've already met Ten Winds and Kieran but there are two more Champions waiting in the wings. One of the current goals is to make sure all of them have their cards, relics and stickers designed and added to the game. Luckily I have managed to acquire reinforcements to help me work on that monumental task! Since June, Mauro, the game designer of Into The Grid, has joined me for a stretch as a freelancer! It’s been an inspiring collaboration and together we’ve made great progress! At this point, three out of the four characters are complete and already feeling pretty good!. We’ve just started on the fourth with some fun new ideas! I’m excited to have all of them ready so they can go through some testing to make sure they’re as fun to play as they can be! City ProgressionA big part of Crownbreakers will be the city gameplay: Returning to Cascade, visiting your contacts, completing quests, and unlocking new stuff! The demo has only shown you but a glimpse of t...Read full article on Community Announcements (Demozilla)Patch NotesOfficial

Demo Data Roundup
Hello radicals!Let's start with the most important thing: If you like the game and the demo, please let other people know! So if you want to support Crownbreakers, please review the demo on Steam, follow the upcoming crowdfunding campaign, and tell your friends or favorite content creator :)So with that out of the way, let's dive into some numbers!Crownbreakers Demo StatsThe Crownbreakers Demo has been out for almost a month and the feedback so far has been great. Both the notes I got through the feedback form as well as the tone and content of the steam reviews (40 reviews - 100% positive!) have been incredibly positive and encouraging. I'm happy to hear that so many of you were having a great time with the demo!Unfortunately the numbers in general are a tad lower than I would have liked. In this day and age, where so many impressive games are released every day, it's incredibly difficult for one game to stand out. With me being a one man studio the amount of energy I have available to pour into marketing is always going to be limited, which makes it hard for Crownbreakers to reach its audience. So let's talk about these numbers for a bit:I first launched the Demo on itch to give it some initial feedback. Thankfully I got featured on the store's front page, which is a big deal. You can clearly see it in the views graph below. The initial bump when being featured, a first drop in early February when the game dropped off the first page of featured games, and the second drop in mid-March when it stepped down another rung of visibility. All in all, the Crownbreakers demo got almost 3.600 downloads on itch.io since launching at the end of January. And as for Steam: Learning from the feedback on itch I launched the updated Demo as part of the Turn-Based Thursday fest. Visibility during that time was much improved, since it got a little featuring too, but overall it led to only around 24.000 views of the Crownbreakers page, and around 400 wishlists on the game itself.Looking...Read full article on Community Announcements (Demozilla)
