Project: Werwolf Dev Blog #6 Caves

Greetings Hunter, Welcome to our new developer blog! This post will be a bit shorter as we’re currently working on an exciting new feature. Let me show you what’s coming. Our upcoming feature introduces Caves—yes, caves! Scattered throughout the map, these caves are home to werewolves. Inside, you’ll find not only packs of werewolves but also nests of the Black Plague and key items that will aid you on your journey as a Hunter. There are small caves associated with specific points of interest, such as the mine, and larger, more dangerous caves that serve as the hearts of the nests. Destroying these nests will significantly reduce the number of werewolves in the area and gradually weaken their strength, making it easier for you to fight back and cleanse the world of these creatures. Once you fully clear a cave, it becomes "cleansed," allowing you to freely harvest its mineral resources. We strongly recommend coming well-prepared, as you never know what dangers might await—and whether you’ll emerge alive! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/abbc4011b763bb21a23a525c7c45ee343d916725.png The cave system is our major development focus at the moment, and there is still much work to be done. We’ll share more insights as the system evolves. Now, onto our next point: the drug laboratory. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/1edaca6627f47a28d0814562e188ce180086f91d.png This new point of interest is located on the outskirts of the map. Here, you can find various chemical compounds to craft new medicines, cure infections, or even explore other possibilities. It also serves as a safe haven, offering a space where you can build your home—even though it might not be my first choice. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/7bf257c977ec04ee29073cc872d80b8a9d6163ee.png That’s all for now. Though this update is a bit shorter than usual, our aim is to develop something truly unique and engaging that offers new ways to play and experience Project: Werewolf. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/54eb64c34b68a4e728779af9b9b2dcf...

Project: Werwolf Dev Blog #5 Engine Update and Cabins

Upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.5 With the latest version of Unreal Engine, we have access to a range of new features that make the game world more immersive, realistic, and dynamic. One of the biggest additions is Mega Light, a groundbreaking technology that allows us to use a vast number of dynamic light sources—without significantly impacting performance. Previously, we often had to limit the number of light sources to maintain a stable frame rate. This was especially noticeable indoors, where cabins, houses, and even streetlights had to be designed with fewer lights. But with Mega Light, that’s no longer a problem. Now, we can fully utilize atmospheric lighting to create dense, immersive environments. Whether it's flickering candles in an abandoned cabin, softly glowing streetlights, or the eerie glow of a fire pit—all these details can now be fully realized to enhance the world’s atmosphere. Another exciting feature is Skeletal Mesh Tessellation, which allows for real-time deformation of organic creatures. This means we can introduce more lifelike animations and believable creature behavior. Muscles and skin will react dynamically to movement, wounds or deformities can be realistically displayed, and even fine surface details can adapt in real-time. How exactly we’ll use this feature in the game? Stay tuned for a future dev blog! New Cabins and Houses Creating a dynamic and ever-changing experience is one of our main goals. That’s why we've been working on an advanced procedural system that not only generates cabins and houses but also fills them with realistic interiors. The core of this system isn’t just random object placement—it’s about structured, believable interior design. Our goal is to make procedurally generated buildings indistinguishable from handcrafted level designs. To achieve this, we use different procedural construction methods depending on the type of building: Cabins: The interiors of cabins are generated as open, interconnected spaces. This resu...

Project: Werwolf Dev Blog #4 A new year and the Watchtower

Greetings Hunters! First of all happy new year to you. We hope you arrived well in 2025, and welcome to our first dev update this year! Now we come to the more important stuff happening at Evolve games. Most of you know we at the studio are just 2 main developers working on Project werewolf and we had a lot of difficulty in the last quarter of 2024 especially in our real life. Because of that we stopped development around mid of october till now. We had a lot of workload to finish and of course the holiday seasons, where we just recharged our batteries to start fresh in 2025. We are sorry we went dark so sudden but sometimes life can be hard. Now that we resumed development, we want to talk about new stuff. Secondly, we want to introduce the new watchtowers! The watchtowers are a central point of safety in the night, where you can safely rest and equip yourself. No werewolf can attack you up there and you can even upgrade them to make small little stations to refill your supplies, sleep through the night, or just decorate how you want. You first need to claim and “unlock” them. The watchtowers are built to make exploration easier at night, so you won't need to return to your own fortified home. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/ed99f8f147add3e9179f019fe30cbcc0f7d572fb.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/010e0a578e36e3256082c2ec675b4c97902fdc83.png Watchtowers are scattered all around the map and have different designs. They are handbuilt to make them as immersive as possible, but we still want to give you the freedom to decorate them however you want. But more about that in a future post! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/4337e6af2ff86dd23422a7518b5aeec470223ef5.png Second of all, we did a lot of backend changes to coding and fixed a whole lot of bugs. We also built some small corrugated iron houses for a new POI I'm currently working on. Can you guess what it will be? We will reveal the POI in our next dev blog, so no worries if you can't guess it right. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/4499854...

Project: Werwolf Dev Blog #3 Orientation and dangers

Welcome, Hunters! In this third installment of our Dev Blog, we will delve into three significant aspects of the game: the Cathedral, the Smartwatch, and the ominous Black Plague. The Cathedral: The Cathedral serves as the central landmark on the map, prominently situated on a massive hill. It is the foundation around which every Point of Interest (POI) is constructed, allowing players to navigate and explore the surroundings with ease. However, be cautious! The Cathedral is heavily affected by the Black Plague, creating an environment filled with danger. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/f74e7ef3a9a372ffa81a6e5497d6179cf845c13f.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/6affc55582eb8fd3523712997bb6a2637f9154a4.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/f1e86a00fee1b322befe266883ea2b1360dd3138.png What is the Black Plague? The Black Plague refers to a toxic mushroom that proliferates across the game world, particularly in caves. This mushroom is hazardous; prolonged exposure can lead to permanent damage to your character. The Smartwatch: The innovative Smartwatch replaces the traditional HUD, offering players a more immersive experience. Key features of the Smartwatch include: Health, Food, Water, and Sanity indicators. Displays time, weather, and temperature. Monitors your status, alerting you if you are infected or suffering from any ailments. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/413f1848493b9d3e3be13af530237273e2ad759b.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/47b4ae7999718fa9a511e18c96d4913a4f19a325.gif {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/2df1343fb8d82b9787167263dada1193d62805d5.gif As a special treat, we are excited to share a glimpse of the new procedurally generated cabins that will enhance your gameplay experience. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/adfe2d252a219abd68865943d741383c644fd40e.png We will provide more about the procedural cabins and houses in a following dev blog. Conclusion: Thank you for joining us in this update, Hunters! We hope you found the information exciting and informative. Stay tuned for our nex...

    Dev-Blog #2 Wildlife and Inventory

Greeting Hunters, Welcome to the second dev blog of Project Werewolf. Today, we want to talk a little bit about wildlife, forests, and food sources in combination with our inventory system. Firstly, we want to talk about the forests because we have a quite unique open world. The forests and all around them are procedurally generated, from small cabins (More in a future post) to how the wildlife behaves and which animals spawn at which biome. Everything will be random once you start a new game. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/0667615a0079a51ab58e7ea2fc3e0ed82d0192f8.png The same spot with another seed {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/d40c4a5cfb63cae0e4e498a23b3b7298a42e8465.png Even the potential food is different, from berries to herbs or trees with fruits on them. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/dc139971b1c9e39ce73974442e215591bc54068a.png Big POI's like the Farm or the Cathedral are not procedurally generated; they are handmade and will exist in every save game. You are free to use it as orientation! Our goal is to create a memorable, open world that tells our story but also changes once you begin a new game or you join your friends, so you always have something to explore and something new to find. Now onto the inventory system. We chose a more realistic approach to the inventory system. Upon starting the game, you have a backpack that uses a 3D tile placement system. Every item has a unique tile size that needs enough space in the backpack to fit properly. This ensures that a big part of a survival game, inventory management, won't be too easy yet also fits the immersion of a more realistic survival game. You can rotate items: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/14b52457f042fc7f33cc30fc23e59c002ce4690c.gif And you can seamless equip gear: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44998542/790ec8ce06e4d528b5c8a01ac5ccf3029ce95ef8.gif Later on, you can use storage to store everything you want to keep. We are also working on a car system with a “trunk” inventory system so you can transport more resources wit...
