Atmospheric System, World Map & Terrain Progress
Hey everyone, As we get further from the "Umbilical Pre-Release" demo, we've returned to the drawing board on several systems, narrative elements, and other details. As previously mentioned, the demo was pieced together quickly to help promote Thou's album release, largely using assets we had on hand. With more time and flexibility, we can fully explore more ambitious ideas and synthesize them with systems and features from other projects we've been testing out over the past couple of years. We've begun adding more varied terrain to the game, including an open, exploratory wetland environment featuring verdant bottomlands and bayous. We're also implementing a world map to fast travel between locations. This map may also be used for smaller text-based environments and vignettes, though we're still very early in exploring these concepts. Our recent focus has primarily involved creating an atmospheric system that enables us to quickly and easily alter the lighting, weather conditions, and other elements to create a rich and dynamic visual landscape. Below I've included a short video demonstrating some of these new features. If you're interested in following the development of this project more closely, I've been publishing monthly devlogs to our Patreon. We hope to have made enough progress by the end of the summer to update the Steam page with a new set of assets and plot information. We look forward to sharing our progress when that time comes. "Umbilical Pre-Release Demo" gone, but progress continues.
Hey everyone, Now that Thou's new album Umbilical is available to purchase through Sacred Bones records, and many have had the opportunity to experience the album via the custom Silenus demo, we've decided to remove the demo from the Steam storefront. However, progress continues! We're experimenting with lots of new environments and gameplay features. The final result will diverge significantly from the Umbilical demo, and we may consider releasing the demo as its own stand-alone experience down the road. Thank you to everyone who has played the demo and reported bugs, feedback, and encouragement via the community forum. It was a big help as well as a significant source of motivation. If you'd like to keep up with the latest, we post exclusive monthly devlogs on Patreon & share piecemeal information related to the project on X/Twitter and Instagram. 2022's oddest indie gets equally weird follow up, playable now
There's no escaping AI any more. It's in our search engines, boiling down art to expressionless slop, and giving us the wrong answers to easily verifiable questions. Not to get all doom and gloom, but it's also only going to get worse. On the upside though, so much of our art is coming into direct discussion with the wave of AI content, and a new adventure game from the critically acclaimed developer behind Norco is taking the issue head on. This is Silenus, and you can try it for free on Steam right now. Read the rest of the story...Read full article on PCGamesNAnnouncementsOfficial
Silenus "Umbilical Pre-Release" Demo FAQ
Hello everyone, Below we provide more information about the Silenus demo that will be available from Monday, May 20th until sometime in June. Why is the demo called an "Umbilical Pre-Release" demo? While Silenus itself is an independent project, the demo is a customized standalone experience made in collaboration with the Baton Rouge doom metal band Thou. Thou composed material for our 2022 release NORCO and we decided to extend this collaboration to help draw attention to their upcoming album release Umbilical. In the Umbilical pre-release demo, you can unlock all tracks from the album and listen to them in a music player available from the start menu or pause screen. Since the primary purpose of the demo is to elevate and promote the album, we used systems and environments we've been working on, and added some narrative dressing as a medium for collecting songs. Much of this was custom-made for the demo and will be replaced. We will likely keep the demo up for 2 - 3 weeks following this release. Is the demo compatible with Mac? Yes. We've tested the game on a Mid 2015 Macbook Pro running macOs Monterrey 12.7.3 and confirmed that it works. Does the demo support gamepads? Yes. We targeted and tested with an Xbox 360 controller, and can confirm that everything works as intended. However, the prompt displays for the game default to this device schema regardless of which gamepad is being used. We hope to get more device displays implemented in a future update. Does the demo run on Steam Deck? Unfortunately, we don't have access to a Steam Deck to test, but as soon as we get feedback from players, we'll update this response. UPDATE: We just got word from a player that it runs well on Steam Deck. When is the final release? We're not sure yet, but are hoping we can get it compl...Read full article on Community Announcements (geographyofrobots)
