About this game

Burden of Truth is the next entry in the Burden of Proof saga, marking the return of this grand courtroom adventure! Experience the missing chapter from the original story which has been restored & fleshed out into a full game. Gather evidence by investigating the crime scene, find contradictions in the courtroom, and confront the truth with everything you have!

One year after his mentor's poisoning, renowned prosecutor Conrad Cross accepts a new case tangled in a web of conspiracy. In order to determine the true culprit, Cross and his opponent, Kate Flocking, engage in a battle of wits and piece together the incident by analyzing the available evidence. However, this objective proves difficult to accomplish when it's revealed that a mysterious organization is interfering with the flow of information to the courtroom. Even so, the legal counsel is determined to persevere through these limitations and expel the lies by uncovering contradictions within the witness' statements. To deliver justice, someone must be found guilty.

But as the trial winds down, an unsettling situation unfolds when a mysterious figure informs Cross that his childhood friend, Sarah Fletcher, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. At the same time, the dangerous rebellion group 209 Dive mounts an assault to retrieve the Zero Data, a database of information that could plunge the world into nuclear war if it falls into the wrong hands. Knowing that Sarah could never be responsible for the heinous crime she's accused of, Cross must turn his entire mindset around to become the defense attorney that his friend deserves. As the only person capable of saving Fletcher and preventing the catastrophic consequences of the Zero Data's exposure, Cross must enter a deadly trial that could very well determine the fate of the world.

Burden of Truth continues RobProductions' iconic hybrid-genre experience with third person investigations and challenging logic puzzles that test your knowledge of each case. Explore the crime scene as you survey full 3D environments for traces of the culprit. Collect evidence and make surprising deductions via the new tagging system, which highlights more information about the status of each clue. Hold people accountable by tracking the source of each item added to the court record, or utilize on-hand items to get out of dangerous situations.

Then, make your case in the courtroom by cross-examining witnesses and presenting evidence that favors your argument. As legal counsel, you get to choose when to object and when to hold back, but be warned; the judge and his counselors grow weary with every faulty step, so be sure to back up your claims with concrete proof. As you make choices that affect the course of the trial, new discoveries can be made that contradict previous testimony. With logic as your weapon, search for the erroneous statement within the witness' assertions and take the fight to them!

The outcome of the case is in your hands. As such, the burden lies with you to deduce the truth and deliver justice for those that have been wrongly accused!

    Burden of Truth Update 1.1.1

Thanks to a long list of notes I took from Alistair Arsene's streams a month ago, I was able to fix a bunch of small spelling mistakes and further polish up the game for future players! Let's take a look at what changed in this brand new patch:Update DetailsVersion 1.1.1Fixed several typos in Chapter 3 Trial 2Added alternate answers to puzzles in Chapter 3 Trial 2Fixed several typos in Chapter 3 Trial 3Added additional marker objects to an investigation in the endingFixed a typo in a Chapter 3 Trial 2 evidence descriptionSlightly increased the speed of Chibi Cross normal and slow dialogueAdded an easter egg to the Club Nomad levelWow, that's a lot of typos! Thanks Alistair! grumble grumbleJust kidding, this is excellent stuff that needed to be polished up and I almost can't believe so many errors got through despite actually having spellcheck this time around! (if you didn't know, the original Burden of Proof game was written without any spelling or grammar algorithm checks, so there are many problems with it... even still to this day) But now there's no excuse for my mistakes, so enjoy these new grammatical corrections :) I'm sure there are even more that have slipped under the radar, so I'll keep an eye out for them.Additionally, I received some great feedback that one of the investigations in the ending sequence is a bit unclear with which objects you have to inspect to progress. Especially after some problem spots in previous titles (I'm looking at you random security room door in Burden of Proof) (I'm looking at you random crucial table in the Shinogi Chess Club school library) I want to maximize the accessibility of my games, so I added additional details/markers to make the inspect points stand out more. Finally, at the request of a certain Twitch streamer, I've added in a good out-of-bounds joke to the Club Nomad level for anyone who dares to poke around with the debug camera. As a quick aside, the coming weeks will feature cycling discount periods for all of...

    Burden of Truth 1.1.0 Update

A brand new patch for Burden of Truth is now available for everyone to download! Though we're now on the next major patch version, this signifies a core rendering change rather than any significant feature improvements. Still, there are some noteworthy fixes and dialogue changes to check out:Update DetailsVersion 1.1.0Improved a hint in Chapter 3 Trial 3Added alternate answers to a puzzle in Chapter 3 Trial 3Fixed Linux graphics API order so that Vulkan is tried before OpenGLAdded DX12 fallback on Windows if DX11 fails to loadFixed typos in Chapter 3 Trial 1Added alternate answers to some puzzles in Chapter 3 Trial 1Added an easter egg to the Defense Lobby levelThe most pressing issue that necessitated the speedy release of this update was a problem with the native Linux version of the game, which accidentally prioritized the OpenGL rendering API over Vulkan. This would have been fine for Linux users... if not for the fact that URP decals are not compatible with OpenGL at all. This means Linux and Steam Deck players were missing elements like footprints, dirt paths, grunge, and blood stains, which would've been hard to notice until reaching Chapter 3 as there are these elements are not used as much in the courtroom levels. This should hopefully address the issue and allow the other levels to look the way that they should, but in the case that Vulkan is not available, OpenGL is still used as a fallback. Playing the game without decals is not ideal but still possible, so I've left it as an option for older machines. It would also appear that DirectX 12 was not listed as an available option for the Windows version of the game, so I've added it as a fallback and I believe the game can be forced to DX12 mode with a command line parameter if needed. Since there's always potential issues with graphics drivers and specific system setups, it's good to have a secondary option available just in case it helps. But as the game is not reliant on DX12 features, DirectX 11 is a good...

Burden of Truth Update 1.0.8 and Soundtrack Release

A brand new patch for Burden of Truth has just been uploaded and the official soundtrack of the game is now available on Steam! Let's dive in and take a look at what's new:Update DetailsVersion 1.0.8Updated Unity version to 2022.3.62f2Fixed several typos in Chapter 3 Trial 3Added alternate answers to a puzzle in the PrologueYou might have heard about a recent security update to certain versions of the Unity Engine. Since Burden of Truth was developed on Unity 2022.3, upgrading to .62f2 solves this issue and fixes the exploit. It seems as though there are no cases of bad actors actually utilizing the vulnerability, but it's best to be safe. Upgrading was relatively easy but ate up a bit of time, especially since I had to do some rough verification that everything was still working as expected. Now that it's done though, we can hope that this version will remain viable for the project in the long term. Also, the usual typos have been fixed and alternate puzzle solutions have been added as more people discover points of confusion. This is still an ongoing process, but seeing more people finish the game is a good sign that everything is working well enough for everyone to progress! If you happen to discover any logic issues or answers that should seem viable, feel free to report them over on the forums.Soundtrack ReleaseYou can now listen to your favorite songs from the game in HQ .flac format by getting the Burden of Truth Soundtrack on Steam! This is also an excellent way to support my development if you enjoyed the game :) From the thrilling cross-examination tracks to the slow paced mystery music, this album release includes over 3 hours of original music. I've improved my composition skills quite a bit since the original Burden of Proof game, and I'm glad that the music resonated with many players. There are tons of easter egg motifs and old themes that have been repurposed for the new project, so I'm excited to put this out for everyone to listen! This is also a go...

    Burden of Truth Update 1.0.7

Thanks to suggestions and bug reports made by you guys, I was able to fix up a few more lingering issues in this latest patch! Let's take a look at the details:Update DetailsVersion 1.0.7Fixed incorrect details for a profile in Chapter 3 Trial 3Fixed ending trigger conditions for an investigation in Chapter 3 Trial 1Added alternate answers to some puzzles in Chapter 3 Trial 3Removed debug log line when setting region modeAdded an additional script BG image to a scene in Chapter 3 Trial 3The usual "alternate answers" change is present along with some minor bugfixes. This is kind of an ongoing effort as I see the reactions of players to certain puzzles and add in logical solutions to the script to stop future players from getting too confused. I was also able to fix a problem in the airfield investigation, which previously allowed you to complete the section without checking out the fuel tank. A backup system kicked in that still gave you the needed evidence before the trial, but this obviously isn't the intended way to get the item in the Court Record, so this update to the "end investigation" trigger conditions should ensure everyone sees the scene correctly.I also added in a new script image (or "CG") to Chapter 3 Trial 3 in order to make an important moment more impactful. Previously, the characters would just describe a piece of evidence that's relevant to the trial, but now you'll get a visual reference to it as well so that it feels less like it came out of nowhere or that I ran out of time developing the section. Even without it being an actual evidence item, being able to visually identify it will hopefully add to the immersion of the story.NewsBurden of Truth just reached 10 Steam reviews, which is a huge milestone! Thank you so much to everyone who shared your thoughts and supported the game! If you're enjoying your time playing, it would definitely help a lot to leave a review here on Steam, since it helps with the game's visibility and performance in the ...

    Burden of Truth Update 1.0.6

We're still in the early stages of patch updates and fixes but I can definitely see things winding down from this point! More and more of the game has become well-tested as more players chime in with feedback and I think all of the major additions have been handled for now. So let's take a look at today's update:Update DetailsVersion 1.0.6Added center camera button for investigations - C by default on keyboardFixed bottom novel buttons being clickable while invisibleTweaked timing for character animation timingAdded alternate answers to a puzzle the PrologueAdded marker objects to an investigation in the ending for clarityFixed a typo in Chapter 3 Trial 3An important accessibility control is ensuring that players who can't use a mouse or joystick are able to see the environment while investigating, so I've now made a new button you can press which centers the camera behind Cross automatically! Accessibility is a high priority for me and I almost can't believe I didn't think of this option sooner. Thanks to suggestions in the Discord server, you can now play the game with just a keyboard thanks to the full menu nav support + camera options. The default key for this centering action is "C", but you can change it in the settings menu. On a controller, you can click the right stick to center the camera.Besides the usual updates like fixing typos and adding in alternate puzzle answers to logical solutions, I also cleaned up Flocking's pointing animation a bit. In addition, I stopped the novel buttons from being pressable while they were invisible, which happens either during a script effect or pause in the dialogue. It's a small change but one that should improve the user experience since now you won't accidentally hit a novel button while you can't see it. That's all for now, and do feel free to keep the suggestions coming! Stay tuned for the release of the Burden of Truth Soundtrack on October 8th, and thanks for playing!- Matt
