DEV DIARY #8: Escape Tales: The Awakening behind the scenes
With the full version of Escape Tales: The Awakening coming soon, we’d like to take you on a trip behind the scenes once more. 🤠 This time, we’re focusing on the technical aspects of the game, as we’ve managed to ask Tomek, our programist, a few questions about his work on the project and various processes. Would you like to know more? 🤔 Have a good read (and take a closer look at the never-before-seen screenshots!) 👀 {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45048887/13d1fe399556b7fb798ee22375a2311f588d1c4e.png What do you do for Escape Tales: The Awakening? I am responsible for the entire programming side of the project. 🖥️ From the overall architecture to the implementation of individual mechanics and UI or even to make “this button less red.” What were the beginnings of your work on this title like? Intensive. The project got off to a rather nimble start with the concept phase out of the way. 💥 So the vision of the whole thing was shaped in the so-called “wash.” This made it both interesting and flexible. 🧠 {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45048887/9fd9fdecce14c88017a2e0b79e59c0108814675e.png What was the easiest thing for you to do? It's a trick question, but I'll choose the implementation of the game rules. 📝 We ported the title directly from its board version, and thanks to the fact that it had quite clearly outlined rules, you could say that it was “enough” to code them. 🎴 What took you the most time and gave you the most challenges? We try to deliver the title as quickly as possible. What follows from that - we did almost all the work in parallel. 3D models were already being created in the first week before we even knew how specifically they would be used. ✍️ Therefore, I would say that the most difficult part was coordinating the work and making sure that the project was as flexible as possible in terms of its scalability and modifiability so as not to block anyone's work, while leaving room for corrections and fine-tuning. 🧮 {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45048887/2be9731a420309d8f9dd09945570efa3a3df4f...Read full article on Community Announcements (michal.mycka)AnnouncementsOfficial
DEV DIARY #7: The sounds of Escape Tales: The Awakening
Music-wise, we really wanted the main theme for Escape Tales: The Awakening to convey what the protagonist may feel in the story but also incorporate the dark and mysterious feeling of the game. 🎵 For the music you'll hear in further levels while solving puzzles, we took a different approach - to keep it atmospheric and uneasy yet not that engaging. The gameplay music is not supposed to keep you distracted, yet focused on solving puzzles. 🔐 This was one of the challenges for Adam (our sound designer), as he loves writing catchy, melodic music, yet it wouldn’t work in this case. Adam had to sort of minimize the sound palette but make it meaningful and memorable at the same time. What's important for us in this project is to make the sound effects feel vintage and kind of lonely. Items you can notice and interact with in each level are supposed to sound as if they were coming from that space. 🔑 They were treated with tools that help you imagine if you actually dropped or moved something in that particular room. We wanted you to feel every inch of the particular location you discover with these sounds. 🎶 Sound effects for all the items in the game are supposed to enhance the feeling, that you are collecting tools needed for progressing in the game. Every card is important and their sound assets are there to emphasize that. To not be groundless, grab a sneak peak of some of the music you can already hear in the demo, and some more. 👀 Let us know what you think of it! Thanks for taking this trip amongst sounds with us. We hope you’re as thrilled as we are to see and hear everything in the final form! 🤩 Bluekey Games Team --- PS Each room you’ll find yourself in throughout the game has its own music theme. One of the tracks even has a little musical puzzle in it. Can you guess which one? 🧐 PPS. In the meantime, don’t forget to Add the game to your Wishlist and Follow it to stay up to date. 😏 {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45048887/71999d3be256cc705ea205829cf7e094e4b6de70.gif Please n...Read full article on Community Announcements (michal.mycka)AnnouncementsOfficial
DEV DIARY #6: The origins of the original Escape Tales: The Awakening
In this Dev Diary we’re talking with Bartosz Idzikowski, Lock.Me partner, one of the creators of the board game! What did the prototype of Escape Tales: The Awakening look like? At the very beginning, we sketched the first prototypes on paper. ✏️ We created a stack of about 150 pieces of paper; therefore, we had many sketches of the locations and objects. Later we scanned all of them and described to the graphic designer what we would like to do with them next. Very little of it was in Excel or Photoshop, as we wanted to make it fully paper from the very beginning and put as much of our effort as possible. 📝 We felt that using the digital tools would be necessary one way or another, but also wanted the basis to be built from our own ideas and imagination. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45048887/bc3a2fa487f2cb5a90e7a4b8349145098bc6597b.png Did you have a specific plan for the whole game when creating drafts? When we were creating the drafts and sketches for Escape Tales: The Awakening, we also had to come up with a particular game system, accurate for the whole product we had in mind. 🧠 It was a big brainstorming process that took us many, many days, but it brought us great effects. We created the storyline, which we set in a framework, and within that framework we placed the puzzles. 🧮 {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45048887/4757287f05053a2e2d3f6faffc0f3b1e7973204a.png How did you come up with the idea for the story? We knew from the beginning that we wanted our games to deal with difficult topics. We were tired of bland plots in escape room games that were just an excuse to solve puzzles. One of our goals was also to have no time limit on gameplay, which allowed us to present a deeper and more complex story. 🧔🙋♀️ The story of Sam and Lizzy was an idea born during brainstorming, which we decided to develop further. This idea turned out to be so capacious that we felt from the beginning that this was the right direction and we would succeed in creating an interesting, difficult, but also m...Read full article on Community Announcements (michal.mycka)
