Embark on a journey through 1940s Europe as you choose sides and shape history, conjuring spells, confessing secrets, and disappearing into the shadows in Travelling At Night.

About this game

A choices-matter combat-free CRPG from the creator of CULTIST SIMULATOR, BOOK OF HOURS, SUNLESS SEA and FALLEN LONDON.

Europe, 1948: myth-scarred ruins, night-sky abysses, and the golden Incorporates of the USA locked in a cold war against the star-touched Ministries of the USSR. Twelve years ago in the deep Cracow winter, you were hollowed out by the Worms from under the world, and so you had to go away. Now you're back, but your past is long, and it's not done with you yet.

Travelling At Night is a CRPG in the tradition of isometric greats like Planescape: Torment, Shadowrun and Disco Elysium. Guide wry, bold, complex characters on a secret pilgrimage through snow, chitin, opera, amber. Unbury powers that might alter the balance of the Cold War. Your heart tells you one thing, and the night another.

  • CHOOSE your Career and Passions. Are you an exorcist driven by Sorrow, a stage magician seeking to feed your Appetite, or a physician who can't resist Curiosity?

  • COMBAT? No. After six years of war, there's been enough of that for now. But there are still plenty of ways to die, and as anyone who's lived through the War in the World can tell you, there's worse things than death.

  • EXPLORE the wonders and horrors of a Europe changed forever by the War in the World and the War in the Sun.

  • BUILD your character from sixteen very different skills. Dignity is essential for physicians who need to be taken seriously. Spivvery is the only way to ensure a hot meal in a cold world. Any writer will tell you that Sophistication is useful, somehow. And everyone knows Skolekosophy is the study of things that shouldn't be studied.

  • FIND Memories and Signs as you roam the ruins, or glean them from your conversations with NPCs. Use them to grow your Skills and Passions, developing your character along the lines that run shining into the dark.

  • CONSPIRE WITH OR BETRAY the Incorporates, the Ministries, the remortals of the old order. Sell them the power you've unearthed, keep it for yourself, or surrender it to something new.

  • CONCLUDE with your choice of alliance, consequence, destination. Uncover multiple endings; see the consequences of difficult decisions made from different motives in each playthrough.

Weather Factory is Lottie Bevan and Alexis Kennedy, plus an orbiting cadre of talented freelancers. Our thing is abyssally deep indie narrative games. We made Cultist Simulator, BOOK OF HOURS and The Lady Afterwards. Alexis was also creative director and lead writer on Fallen London and Sunless Sea, and did guest writing gigs back in the day for BioWare, Paradox and Telltale.

    2026.9.m.81 - "YON LION'S ET ALBERT"

We've mostly been working on new content, so this is a small patch. But we wanted to get the text size change out - both because people have been asking for it, and because I suspect it will cause some UI side-effects that we'd like to hear about. 2026.9.m.81 - "YON LION'S ET ALBERT"- added promised TEXT SIZE option! It might well cause some oddities at larger text size! Please send us screenshots if it toes.- toast stack now evicts oldest toasts when they'd go off the screen- skill-check chance on aspect-y responses now mre accurate- game guesses appropriate quality level for integrated chips slightly more accurately on first run. I hope.- fixed T-key tooltip focus not working on non-Latin keyboard layouts- Chi and the card players are now proper Spine animations not sprite animations- footnote and item copy fixes- lots of Mimata changes that really shouldn't be visible yet!

    ## 2026.9.m.17 - "CANTILEVERED INTO LIGHT"

Until this update, the game had two kinds of skill-modifying itemspermanent items you'd equip that would give you bonusesone-use items you'd equip that would give you bonuses until the first time you succeeded with a skill check that relied on them as the best bonus-giver, at which point they'd get used up, also you could use them whether equipped or not to unlock occult-operation choices with matching aspects like Bewitch and Expel, in which case sometimes but not always they'd get used upConfused? Fair. It was that way because I wanted to make crafted items different from purchased items - more powerful, cheaper, but one-use - and plug them flavourfully into the choice system. The various prototypes where you decided which to use when were even more confusing. But honestly it confused us too sometimes, and when an item disappears for confusing reasons, that doesn't exactly spark joy for players. So we knocked it about and reworked it.In the reworked version, there are permanent items you equip that give you bonusesone-use items that you don't equip, but you can choose one to help with the little magics you do in dialogueNB help with. Choices with occult-operation aspects like these aren't locked out any more - they're always open. But they're generally attached to a skill check. So if you don't have a suitable item to help - or if you want to save it for later - you fall back on improvised materials with a hefty penalty. Some thematic stuff this reinforces: (i) Spencer can't throw fireballs. Like a character in a Tim Powers or Susanna Clarke novel (John Constantine kept coming up as an example in Lottie's and my discussions tool), he needs his kit of useful things or he has to fall back on bits of fluff and chalked sun-crosses (ii) fortunately, he can make a lot of that kit himself (iii) also he can fall back on fluff and chalk - and if he's got a high enough skill, or if he has a full Aspect Pool, he'll succeed anyway through ability or luck (iv) note the differe...

2026.8.l.31 - "THE HEART HAD BEEN AN APPLE ONCE"

2026.8.l.31 - "THE HEART HAD BEEN AN APPLE ONCE"- there are now three dialogue speeds: CALM, QUICK and CRISP. Try 'em out and see which one works for you.- related: fix for the stuttering effect in dialogue - typewriting in CALM and QUICK is much smoother (CRISP has no typewriting at all)- you can now use a mixture of Experiences rather than all of one type to increase (but not evolve) a Skill or Passion, making it much easier to increase.- Skill increase costs up to 10 have been halved for both career and non-career skills; you can also increase a skill to 9 at character generation- these aren't final numbers! We'll tune as the game grows. But I wanted to let people try out more skill increases in the demo.- We're now supporting non-QWERTY keyboard layouts as best we can. I've tried it with French and German, most other Latin layouts should work. If yours doesn't, send us an F10 and we'll see what we can do- related: LeftAlt now works as well as Z for interactable highlighting- We've updated the keyboard shortcuts image to take account of recent changes. (still shows QWERTY, no rebinding options yet, don't get too excited)- Spencer is now much less likely to run backwards- you should no longer be able to start a conversation while changing scene.- added skill checks to certain occult actions in Chez Felix - laying the groundowrk for making occult actions clearer- Lucifer Match now has the Unveil aspect (ditto)- footnote text-search now includes tutorial messages that you've seen (except some highly incidental/specific ones)- softened the lines on the crafting menu, added click-to-lock skill headers, fixed a typo- prettified ending screen- prettified Aspect Pool- three memories had a stack size of 1, fixed to 99- you'd have got this patch yesterday but I found a wretched bug that meant the inventory-drag would inexplicably force-drop items. After two hours of bug-hunting it turned out to be a bug that only surfaced in the editor, not in the actual build you lot see....

2026.8.l.5 - "SEVERE GALLERIES IN SECRET CIRCLES"

    - Lots of work on the look and feel of the map! You can't enjoy this properly yet while there's still only one travel destination, but the experience is more elegant when you do (vignette, Spencer bubble, fun-er button, bigger hitboxes for cities, prettier selection marker)- halved the default tooltip delay (won't affect existing installs, but you can still reduce tooltip delay in config)- much harder to select dialogue options by mistake! we wait for a quarter-second after the text completes, and we don't select the first option unless you hit an arrow key, so you can safely hammmer space. Also, down arrow now advances text.- if you switch from crafting to inventory at a venue, then back, crafting remembers the venue- walking near puddles should no longer provoke weird behaviour from Spencer- game will no longer crash if you have the wrong permissions on your save folder- camera movement tutorial popup- lots of fiddly highlight bug fixing- if you've met someone but they have no opinion of you yet, journal will show 'Uncertain' not 'Unmet'- LOAD GAME button disappears when there are no saves, matching continue button- bug report character limit of 3000 characters (we're still at support@weatherfactory.biz if you want a more prolix option)- clarified 'consumed' vs 'exhausted'- Linou varies her lines when you're doing conjuring tricks.- the Antibes welcome zone no longer rotates Spencer. Don't look back in anger.- load/save menu scroll now works the first time you open it

2026.8.k.51 - "THE BIRDS DRUNK ON UNKNOWN SKY-FOAM"

We went a whole day without a patch! We are slowing down now as we get to the meatier improvements. Another week or so and it'll be much calmer.- major Passions UI rework to make everything prettier, & shows current potential Passions & lets you reject 'em- fixed a bug where you could have the same potential Passion on two empty ones (which also gave you the wrong evolve cost)- lots of other tiny grace notes on the character screen skill and passion cards- lots more character sheet beautification- and journal beautification: we finally fixed those placeholder reward buttons- footnotes can now be opened directly with T/middle-click - no more waiting for popup- footnotes less inclined to coyness after clicking a +/- button on character sheet- X-close button in same place on all menus- the occluding darkness that descends when you enter a cutaway now occludes everything. This meant some reworking so do let us know about glitches- Linou now itemises her bill when asking you to pay- +/- buttons on character sheet now give audible feedback on success/fail- music on the character generation screen is ducked; actual dB volume is lower in the bottom half of the music volume slider- tutorial alerts can't pop up on the character screen- companion should stop occasionally displaying as a cyan blotch- can no longer click NPCs and objects inside a shrouded room- another complicated fix to a Zèlia outcome. Next game it's going to be simple Y-shaped fetch quests with an end decision, damn it- Sinombre doesn't give upn you as easily- Welland's painting only gives one option- Andrée can buy notebooks again, though she still won't sell them- sock juice counts towards the refreshment tally- "Troubles" no longer called "Menaces" in the one place they were still called "Menaces"- fixed Russian sun; removed localised BH assets (dd23a345c)- world-map flags, flowers distance, sunny zone extended to edge, passion button- can't get chilly running along the Antibes beach any more- fixed missin...
