About this game

Step into the Abyss - tells the noir story of detective Chris Mori. Chris has a unique trait - he cannot see faces, but this doesn't stop him from solving complex cases, compensating for his lack in other ways. Few know that Chris is possessed by a dark entity, which can be a dangerous foe or an unreliable ally. It all depends on the player's choices.

The events unfold in the universe of Absorbed, within the vast empire of Absorbium, in the small town of Misty Hills. The country is under a dictatorship, with constant surveillance over its citizens, and a single careless action or word can result in losing one's freedom.
The inhabitants of the world are multifaceted. Each one has a distinct personality with their interests and character. Their appearances are memorable. Just remember, everyone you meet could be either an ally or an enemy.

A dark noir city is almost always shrouded in fog and rain, to which everyone has become accustomed and no longer pays much attention. By combining 2D-digital graphics and 3D-Voxel, we have achieved an interesting and visually pleasing blend, offering the player a unique visual experience.

Dive headfirst into the grim reality of this original detective story. In a world of dictatorship, where a single wrong glance at the elite can cost you your freedom, a seasoned detective will repeatedly face the choice of digging deeper for the truth or giving up and conforming.

Take on the role of a private detective tasked with solving a murder. Gather testimonies, study evidence, piece together events, and find the culprit.

• Deep non-linear storyline: You will experience Chris Mori's detective story, which you control. We offer 35 different story paths and more than 2 endings.
• Dialogue system: More than 100 different dialogues and over 600 response options await you. Each choice will directly influence future events.
• Main character: You will play private detective Chris Mori, who cannot see faces and battles his inner demons.
• Evidence system: Any investigation involves searching for evidence, analyzing, and correlating it. You'll do all of this in our game, aided by an intuitive evidence board that helps you navigate the investigation and plan your next steps.
• Atmosphere: A small, grim provincial town shrouded in fog and rain, forgotten by God and populated by frightened residents - a dystopian world of dictatorship and fear.
• Graphics: In Step into the Abyss, we blend Digital Art and Voxel graphic styles.
• Migraine system: The protagonist can lose control due to migraines, jeopardizing the investigation.
• NPCs: Each non-playable character has their own opinions and personality and can cause trouble if you anger them.
• Atmosphere of a true noir detective story.

DEV NEWS: Step into the Abyss - story teaser
The first month of 2025 has come to an end, and we are gradually moving away from the holiday season and diving into productive work. In our New Year’s post, we already mentioned that we are transitioning to a new phase—integrating new systems to replace the old ones that were breaking the game. While this process is relatively simple in concept, it is incredibly time-consuming and monotonous. Right now, we are in the thick of it. Additionally, our artist has slightly reworked the design and appearance of the dialogue interface to better align with the overall visual style of the game. And yes, of course, we have something to share with you. Today, we’ll show you a small snippet from the opening cutscene, offering a brief glimpse into the past of our protagonist, Chris Mori. Let me emphasize once again—this is just a tiny piece of the bigger picture, meant to introduce the player to the story. At the same time, it gives a partial preview of the updated interface. One more small, not particularly significant, but still pleasant update: while part of our team was focused on integrating the new system into the game's backend, another part was working on updating our website, which will be launching in just a few days. It may not be the most critical update, but it reflects our commitment and the seriousness of our plans. «I remember the day when the Emperor's troops first marched through the city in a triumphant parade. Back then, we had no idea where the world was heading.» — Notes of an unknown journalist.Read full article on Community Announcements (aWeR)AnnouncementsOfficial
Step into the Abyss - The Morality Police.
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44972899/bce6ac95431a39fc524802467b2eae26aac7704a.png Today, we decided to tell you about one of the most important institutions in our world of Absorbium – the Morality Police. This is the very body without which our dystopian world could not function. Below are a few historical notes that the player will have to find in the game. "The Morality Police was established by an imperial decree in 2020, exactly one month before the expansion across the continent began. Back then, we didn’t yet call him the Emperor, and our country maintained the illusion of a democratic state. Some of us suspected where things were heading, but simple human naivety, faith in the best, and the propaganda machine denied everything. By the time we realized the truth, it was too late – war had engulfed the continent, and the Morality Police had gained enough power to destroy all dissenters." – Unknown journalist, excerpt from the newspaper "My Struggle," dated 08.09.2023. "It has been a year since our brave Morality Police began their work. During this year, they have prevented numerous terrorist attacks and punished hundreds of dissenters—those who threatened our statehood and the Emperor's authority. The head of the Morality Police, in an interview with our journalist, asked to remind everyone that all their work is aimed at protecting ordinary citizens. Every day, hundreds of Morality Police officers risk their lives so that we can sleep peacefully. Glory to the Emperor!" - Excerpt from the newspaper "Imperial Grandeur," dated 03.21.2021 "They came for him at night, asking him persistently about some post in the social network 'Law'. He kept shouting that it was true, that he had just written what he thought and what was real. For three hours, I heard blows and screams – they were torturing them. Then, everything went silent, complete silence with no sound. I think it's needless to say that I never saw them again." – Transcript of a radio broadcast from the pirate radio...Read full article on Community Announcements (aWeR)AnnouncementsOfficial
Demonstration of the Dialogue System - Step into the Abyss
We've been thinking, and we realized that we've been showing you a lot of screenshots but very few video demonstrations of what we're working on. Today, we want to correct this oversight and, following up on our previous demonstration of the dialogue system interface, show it to you in full on video. This is just a small, insignificant snippet of one of the many dialogues you'll encounter in the game. Today, besides the usual updates on what we're working on and what we're ready to show, we’d like to share with you a bit more openly. Step into the Abyss is the first game for our team and our first experience in developing a complete and finished game, which is why we’ve had to delay the release a few times and decided to rework some aspects that seemed like great solutions on paper. And even though this path is thorny and challenging, we are getting better every day, overcoming difficulties, learning, and, most importantly, gaining confidence in our game idea and choices. To give you an idea of how challenging this process is for a team of four, the video you’re seeing was developed, polished, and fine-tuned over a little more than a month. But this process is what brings us all joy. We decided to share with you this openly because we’re almost ready to show you even more gameplay from Step into the Abyss, as work on the demo version is in full swing, although we’re still fixing some rough edges. Very soon, we’ll be ready to show you more gameplay and announce the much-anticipated date when you can get your hands on Step into the Abyss and dive into the story of Detective Chris Mori.Read full article on Community Announcements (aWeR)AnnouncementsOfficial
The dialogue system is the foundation of Step into the Abyss.
{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44972899/4282ff9d74ea1ae060cf28af4d0c7b3bf9e8503f.png We have already indirectly touched on the topic of dialogues in our Step into the Abyss, but it was only indirect. We need to rectify this injustice. Dialogues as a system are fundamental to our game. After all, a detective's work is not only about inspecting the crime scene, collecting, and analyzing evidence, but also obtaining testimonies that people are not always ready to give immediately and honestly. Therefore, Chris will often have to press people for the truth, and the player will need to analyze the situation, compare facts, and determine whether they are being told the truth or not. One of our main goals is to provide the player with variability in communicating with NPCs. You will always have many dialogue development options: some responses may be harmless, some may advance the investigation or bring benefits to Chris himself, but some may be fatal. The player must always remember that they exist in an authoritarian regime, and any action or word can have consequences, not all of which are immediate. We, in turn, want to minimize our influence as creators on what happens to the player. And this does not mean that we will not guide you at all—just that we will try to do this only in the most critical places. At other times, you will be left to yourself, and only your choice will drive the plot and the further fate of Chris Mori. In the screenshot attached to the post, you can see a piece of the dialogue interface taken from the cutscene.Read full article on Community Announcements (aWeR)AnnouncementsOfficial
A little about filling our world, propaganda posters
We have often mentioned that Absorbium is a dystopian world. It is ruled by a dictatorship, with almost all power concentrated in the hands of the Emperor. In creating this world, we strive to make it as realistic as possible, so throughout our world, you will find many classic elements typical of totalitarian or authoritarian regimes. Any dictatorial regime always relies on the propaganda machine. Its purpose is to dull the minds of citizens and create an illusion of national unity. One of its most effective methods is the use of propaganda posters. For example, in the city, Chris will often encounter various wanted boards for dissidents or propaganda posters. We decided to accompany this post with a few such posters. And these are just a few of the many posters we have prepared for you. "A cruel world, a cruel state that doesn't need smart people. They sit on cardboard without a home, without income, surviving only by scavenging. They are forced to do this, they have no other way. Unfortunately, we chose this ourselves. How easily imperial slogans win the love of the crowd." - Chris Mori. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44972899/fe5090c7e0c79cfe77383d7f4f38069d203573aa.jpgRead full article on Community Announcements (aWeR)
