About this game

Onyx is a passion project by a solo developer, blending open world RPG elements with free-form land cultivation. Explore handcrafted regions, master a wide array of spells, and build your own home at your own pace. Your feedback directly shapes this growing world.

Onyx combines free-form land cultivation with the depth of an open-world RPG. You own a piece of land that you can transform into a flourishing estate, while a vast world of handcrafted regions and magical mysteries waits just beyond your fences. There is no rigid path to follow and no pressure to rush. You can spend your time mastering unique spells, discovering rare resources in caves, or simply enjoying the quiet life of a land owner at your own pace.

This is just a brief overview of the core features, but there is much more to discover as the world of Hyalen is constantly expanding and new content is added regularly.

Your Character Your Style

Create your own character with various customization options.
Level up and spend points across several magic skill trees.
Use unique spells not just for combat, but to actively work your land.
Summon rain for your crops, make grass grow, or use magic to prepare the soil for planting.

Your Land Your Rules

You own a piece of land that you can cultivate freely.
Build structures with unique functions, grow various plants to process or sell, and breed animals to grow your estate.
You are never forced to sleep, and you can even adjust the length of the day.

Crafting and Harvesting

A wide crafting system allows you to create tools, clothing, and weapons.
Mine ores, chop trees, and gather resources in the wild.
Whether it is leatherworking, cooking, alchemy, or blacksmithing, you equip yourself for whatever path you choose.

Regions and Caves

Explore the handcrafted world of Hyalen and its various regions, from dense forest and mountain slopes to the shore and an abandoned village. Discover hidden areas and dark caves to find rare resources and uncover the secrets of the land.

Reputation and Quests

Through the Reputation System, you increase your standing with NPCs.
This unlocks new quests from villagers as well as access to special rewards and rare items.

Living World and Companions

Experience events like Market Day, Ghost Night, or Zombie Invasions.
Find, buy, or catch various Pets to accompany you, or find Mounts to travel through the world more comfortably.
You can even spend a quiet day catching different types of fish in the local waters.

The Ingame Feedback Tool

I am developing Onyx entirely on my own, which makes your feedback my most important compass. You will find a tool inside the game where you can write to me at any time. Whether it is about wishes for items, thoughts on balancing, or new ideas for the world, I read every single message personally. Your perspective helps me to constantly evolve and refine Onyx as it continues to grow.

Controller Support

Native controller support is currently implemented, though not at 100% yet.
If you run into any issues, disabling Steam Input in the game's Steam properties might help.

A World That Grows Together

With a project of this scale, it is almost impossible for a single person to keep an eye on every blade of grass and every piece of text at all times. Since I am a German solo developer, you might occasionally find that some texts do not sound perfectly fluid or contain small errors. If you notice something like that, or if you stumble upon an object that looks like it could use a visual upgrade compared to newer content, please let me know. I really appreciate it when you use the ingame feedback tool to report these things. I am more than happy to update texts and models to polish the world bit by bit together with you.

Direct Contact and Support

If you run into any issues or have questions, feel free to join the Onyx Discord.

It is still pretty quiet there at the moment, but I am online almost all the time and usually respond very quickly. The only thing that might cause a delay is the regional time difference, but I try to be there for everyone.

A Word From Me

Onyx is a passion project that is constantly growing. As you can see in the update history, the game is expanded every chance I get. Since I am managing this entire project alone, a bug might pop up here and there. You can be sure that I take bugs seriously and aim to address issues as quickly as possible. Sometimes it might take a moment longer if my health gets in the way, but I always stay on it.

Thank you for supporting me and this project on this journey!

P.S. To be honest, most of the time I have no idea what I’m doing.

    Archaeology

Archaeology While testing the game, the archaeology branch was honestly a bit sad to look at. Everything else kept growing, while archaeology literally stayed stuck in the Stone Age. That is why the following adjustments were made to better fit the current state of Onyx. These adjustments also create a nice little loop to finally bring the requested dinos into the game ha.In larger regions excluding caves, there is now a chance around fifty percent upon entry that a relic will spawn somewhere in the area.Relics can be tracked down using a resonance tool like a dowsing rod or a tuning fork.If a relic is within range, its position can be pinpointed via frequency feedback to indicate where to dig.Unearthing relics increases the Archaeology skill. The archaeologist has received another quest where a tuning fork is given as a reward.A new archaeology quest called Fossils unlocks after handing a relic to the archaeologist, giving the recipe for an Onyx Genesis Chamber as a reward.NewDowsing Rod and Tuning Fork Can be used to track down relics. The recipe for the dowsing rod as well as the rod itself can now be purchased from the archaeologist. Additionally, the tuning fork is available for purchase there too.Relics Can contain either a chest with valuable loot or fossils.Onyx Genesis Chamber A device that can create something new or living out of remains. For example, placing enough fossils of a specific animal inside allows you to bring that creature back to life.Dodos The complete package has been added, featuring breeding, twins, triplets, colors, children, females, males, and eggs.Notes Certain notes placed in houses or other locations can now be read.Invisibility Potion The recipe is unlocked at 60 reputation with the Forest Witch. Crafting requires ghost essences, dropped by ghosts during Ghost Night.MinestraTo make sure the village can take full advantage of all the new features, Minestra has received a general update. The residents of Minestra have discovered trash ...

    Giants

Giants Yeah, that just had to be. The first giant versions of plantable crops have been added. Nobody still knows where Nick gets his weird rarities from, but from time to time (30 %), he may have a bag of these unusual seeds available in his shop. They can also occasionally be found as loot throughout the world. Giant Carrot (drops a lot of Carrots)Giant Parsnip (drops a lot of Parsnips)Giant Pumpkin (drops a lot of Pumpkins and Giant Pumpkin Pieces)Giant Strawberries (drops a lot of Strawberries)Note: Giant plants now use a completely new system designed to address the limitations and missing features identified with the previous system. They can be placed freely using the BuildManager without being restricted by the grid, while still requiring Digged Dirt for planting. This gives us the flexibility to create plants in virtually any size and shape we want. The placement preview clearly shows the required space, while the watering status can be directly recognized on the plant itself. Seeds can also be dug back out with a shovel as long as they are still in the first growth stage, giving more flexibility when adjusting or correcting placements. If the new system performs reliably, the goal is to eventually migrate all other plants to this system as well.GamepadThe D-pad left and right buttons can now also be used in-game to adjust ui sliders with a gamepad. In the main menu, the gamepad stick will remain in use until the input actions are overhauled.Version Number The version number has mostly just grown over time and hasn’t really communicated much about Onyx’s current development stage. Since some players could use the version number as an indication of how far along the game is, it makes sense to make it a little more meaningful going forward. So, welcome to version 0.7.1.0! From now on, the first two numbers will give a rough indication of the current development stage. Just to be clear: 0.7 does not mean that Onyx is 70% finished. It’s simply a rough indicatio...

    More Gamepad

Gamepad ImprovementsVirtual Keyboard Onyx now has the first version of its own virtual keyboard that automatically opens when you select an input field with a gamepad. While in-game and active, the virtual keyboard can be navigated using the D-pad (not yet fully supported in the main menu). Labels, names, signs, etc. should be easily manageable with this. Writing a novel into custom books might require extensions such as a key for line breaks or an expandable input field. Feel free to let me know if you want more buttons.Main Menu Character creation and loading saved games can now also be navigated with the gamepad stick. Note: The zombie shooter isn't gamepad-compatible yet, which should be fine for the time being.NPC Gifting You can now use the Action key to give the currently selected inventory item to an NPC standing in front of your character. Keyboard & mouse players can still use drag & drop if they prefer. Additionally, a safety check has been added to prevent tools, weapons, equipment, recipes, and structure-units from being gifted accidentally.UI Toggles & Sliders Gamepad UI clicks now fully support interactive elements like toggles for favoriting quests. Sliders for adjusting settings, such as game difficulty, are also fully supported now.Spell Dashes Spell dashes like Windstep or Veilstep are now always executed in the movement direction instead of the mouse cursor direction. Realized along the way that the ancient dashes aren't really pretty and desperately need an update.Running with Mounts Mounts now support the same run toggle as your character, replacing the previous hold-to-run behavior.ImprovementsImplemented Steamworks integration for future features like achievements and stats. The player name in the character window can now also be changed using a gamepad.Multiple improvements and fine-tuning for overall better gamepad support.Improved pathfinding across all entities. As mentioned in the previous update, bandits now move more reliably and no lon...

    Bandits

Foreword Hey everyone! After my graphics card fried, a very kind person sponsored a used replacement, bringing this whole odyssey to an end. While a few parts of this update were already pushed out, the complete patch (which was ready over a week ago) is now live! Bandits Finally! The first Raiders... I mean... Bandits are here! They are evil, ruthless, always have a stupid comeback ready, and always deserve a good lesson. They have already occupied the new iron mine in the northwestern mountains and set up their camps there. What you see is what you get. Whatever clothing and weapons you see on the bandits, you will also be able to loot from them, though they will be damaged of course. Have fun stripping them down. After they are defeated, their inventory can be accessed directly.2 new tops and pants have been added to match the style of the bandits. The already existing bandit outfit, which you could already see on Nadja in Minestra, has been upgraded. The recipes for crafting the new bandit outfit drop exclusively from bandits.Bandits and all related content now have the standard respawn time of one week.Their movement might still be a little shaky at times, as their pathfinding system will receive a dedicated update soon. Mountains Reworked The mountains have been completely reworked and now appear in a brand-new look. In the new archaeology area, you can now always find 4-6 digging spots (1-week respawn). In the first, rather harmless cave, you can now always find salt deposits (1-week respawn). The quarry and the dwarf cave are now much easier to reach.A new iron mine has been added. Many more changes.Release Character A new Release Character button has been added next to the Feedback button. If your character ever becomes stuck or the controls freeze for any reason, you can use this button to restore character control. It seems there’s a bug occasionally popping up that locks the character after using a weapon. Since I haven't been able to reproduce it yet, I wante...
