About this game

Return: Unknown

An abandoned metropolis. Endless possibilities. And you right in the middle of it.

Dive into a survival adventure set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, inspired by the freedom of great open-world games and the dark atmosphere of a fallen city. After a global virus wiped out civilization, a living and dangerous world remains, offering you complete freedom.

By day, explore streets, buildings, and towering skyscrapers, gather resources, and build your own path to survival. But when night falls, everything changes.

The infected become more aggressive, move through the shadows, and turn the darkness into a deadly threat. The city that belongs to you during the day becomes their territory at night.

Survive by managing hunger, thirst, exhaustion, cold, and heat, while even keeping an eye on your body weight, which directly affects gameplay. Every decision matters.

Use vehicles such as cars, boats, airplanes, helicopters, and mini-submarines to travel across land, water, and air. Build anywhere: on the ground, on rooftops, or high above on skyscrapers, or reinforce existing structures to create a secure base.

Whether alone or with others, you decide how to survive. Fight, trade, explore, or create your own safe haven in a ruthless world.

Dynamic weather, changing seasons, and unexpected events such as power outages constantly reshape the world and force you to adapt.

Play alone or with others, survive in co-op, or compete on servers with up to 128 players.

Return: Unknown – Characters, Destruction & a Growing World

Hello Community and Survivors! It has been quite a while since we last gave you a bigger look at the development. A lot has happened since then, both visibly throughout the game world and behind the scenes with many of the systems.A large part of the work continues to go into level design and the technical systems required to create a large and interactive game world. The Character Is Becoming ModularWe are currently working on making the character system modular using MetaHuman technology.Players will be able to customize their characters individually. This includes different hairstyles, eyes, and beards, as well as the option to choose between a male and female character. At the same time, this will provide the foundation for expanding the character system even further in the future.More Than Just a Static Game WorldAnother major addition is our destruction system. Our goal is to make sure the environment isn't simply made up of static objects. A large part of the world should be able to react to what happens during gameplay. For example, signs, fences, smaller objects, and other parts of the environment can be damaged or completely destroyed. Even larger elements such as walls can be brought down.Performance is especially important with a game world of this size. That's why the system has been designed from the beginning to handle large numbers of destructible elements as efficiently as possible. This should make the world feel much more dynamic instead of simply being a backdrop. The World Continues to GrowOf course, development of the level design is also continuing to move forward.Manhattan now has a large airport, adding another extensive area to the game world. In addition, several smaller airports are planned for other locations throughout the world. Many areas are still actively being developed. With a project of this scale, the world, gameplay, and technical systems all need to come together step by step.In upcoming development updates, we want to show you more r...

Return: Unknown – Vehicle Physics & World Update

Hello Community and Survivors! From now on, I want to keep updates and news more clearly separated. This way, you can easily track when updates are released and what has changed.Today, a new update for "Return: Unknown" has been released.Various core features have been revised and improved. Multiplayer has also been further tested and optimized. In addition, the driving physics for boats and cars have been reworked. The current focus is on building a solid foundation for all vehicles. The game currently takes up about 42 GB, and I expect it to reach around 70–100 GB by release.I have to admit, it’s a bit ironic. You build a world, only to partially destroy it again to achieve that apocalyptic look. Basically, you end up doing exactly what you would normally tell your kids not to do 😄Right now, the main focus is on expanding the city. Decorating and fine-tuning everything takes a lot of time, but I’m confident that you’ll really enjoy the game in the end.Unfortunately, I can’t share too many insights yet, but I’ll do my best to keep you updated regularly with images and videos.Ideas and suggestions are always welcome. Feel free to drop a comment and let me know what you’re most excited about and what you think of the current development!Thank you very much for your support! In the Community Hub or on Discord, you can follow the development and ask questions.Community HubDiscord

Development Update – Details, Interactions and Exploration

Hello Community and Survivors! The development of Return: Unknown continues to progress. Unfortunately, I can't write news updates as often as I would like. However, I occasionally post images and smaller updates on Discord. If you'd like, feel free to stop by anytime: https://discord.gg/8zyKXj9SDrDesigning the world is extremely complex and very time-consuming. I try to pay attention to many details in order to create an experience that can compete with larger studios. It’s a big challenge, but one that I’m happy to continue taking on.If you have questions or ideas, you can share them with me at any time. If anyone is wondering how you can currently support me: sharing my news or the Steam page helps me tremendously in reaching my goals. It’s also very motivating to see the project being spread further. Even small videos on YouTube or TikTok can help incredibly. In the images of this news update, I show you some of the first preparations for physics-based interactions in the world. The goal is for players to interact more with their surroundings, for example by being able to knock over barriers or traffic cones. Small details like these contribute a lot to making the world feel more alive and believable.Another important point is the accessibility of the world. Many buildings are planned to be enterable, including larger buildings or skyscrapers. Not every floor will be completely filled with apartments; instead they will be distributed to keep the world believable and varied. In the long term, it is also planned that players will be able to claim locations, such as apartments or other areas, by securing them with their own obstacles. Here I would like to show you a few small insights again. I would love to present even more, but currently a lot of fundamental groundwork is still being prepared before moving on to the many details.A strong focus on details and small nuances.Physics-based interactions are an important part of the development. Enterable buildings and acc...

Crossplay, "Seekers" and a Look Toward Future Test Phases

Hello Community and Survivors! The development of Return: Unknown continues – step by step, a world is taking shape where every decision matters. Even if progress is sometimes slower than I would like, this project is filled with passion and hard work. Your ideas, wishes, and feedback play a huge role in shaping the game. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to reach out at any time.If you enjoy what you see so far, I would truly appreciate it if you recommended Return: Unknown to your friends. Word of mouth is incredibly important for an indie project and helps me plan the future of the game more clearly and meet your expectations even better.Testing Phase and Release PreparationMany of you are asking when the game will be released. At the moment, I cannot give a fixed release date, as quality is my top priority. Before Return: Unknown is officially released, I am planning a testing phase with selected players. During this phase, players will get early access to the game in order to test it and provide valuable feedback. This feedback is extremely important to help me improve the game and properly prepare for the final release.Important: To make sure you don’t miss the start of the testing phase, please make sure to follow the game on Steam. This is the best way to receive a notification when test sign-ups begin.Your First Shelter in a Lost WorldRight now, I am working on your future starting location. Inspired by the movie I Am Legend, the iconic building at 11 Washington Square North will become your first home in a deserted world. A place that offers safety and at the same time marks the beginning of your fight for survival.A New Threat: The SeekersOne of the most exciting new features are the Seekers, human infected who will become one of your greatest threats. They hunt relentlessly at night and hide in the shadows during the day. But once they step into direct sunlight, they begin to burn, a mechanic that is already working very well and will ope...
