About this game
(Note: This game does not use generative AI.)
Features:
- Hundreds of cards. You can mix-and-match effects from different cards using a unique card-cutting mechanic. There are endless possibilities of what you can make!
- Play your cards even outside of combat. In almost any event, you can play non-combat cards to change the outcome. Carefully consider how to balance your deck between combat and non-combat cards to successfully traverse the continent.
- Nonlinear exploration in a randomly generated map. Each time you play, a new map with different arrangements of terrain, biomes, and rivers is generated. You can choose to backtrack, but you'll have to keep an eye on your rations. The maps are displayed in a hand-drawn style (and if you want an authentic version without colors, you can choose that in settings!)
- Card battles with physics-based simulations. When you shoot arrows at an enemy, there's not just a generic slashing animation. Instead, arrows fly out towards your enemy and collide with them or their defenses!
- Complex elemental system. Each object has its own custom elemental effects that change based on the object it is interacting with. For example, enemies chilled with ice both deal less damage and take less damage, but they can be warmed with fire to negate this resistance.

Cut the Cards v2.0.0: In-combat crafting!
Hello everyone! We have some updates to the user interface today. Finally, you can craft cards in-combat without having to go to the deck screen: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/61c38bb205e5e061a9700ef1abdbcb0e0a5be3da.gif There's also been some improvements to the dialogue card-playing interface, but it's not in its final version yet. I have some ideas for cool biome-based physical effects, but I'll wait until they're implemented to reveal them. The new card abilities will have to wait until the next update!Read full article on Community Announcements (cafebeef)AnnouncementsOfficial
Cut the Cards v0.1.9: Placeable items!
Hello everyone! This time, I've added some new placement abilities to each card. I think it's more exciting to get to choose exactly which enemy you're attacking, instead of just letting the game guess for you. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/11425c652dcd4ec7ab7cf5985d0ee9deef22b31e.png This also extends to where you can place defenses. Hopefully this makes it more fun to build up chaotic piles of physics objects! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/c4aad285de300f76e22bb5faa3a6b424209144c5.png There's also been some enemy balancing in this update that make the enemies have more reasonable health/damage, especially at the beginning of a new run. Although I originally wanted to show off new cards in this update, I realized these placement abilities are a prerequisite for implementing some of the more complex ones. So, hopefully next time, I will have some epic new cards to show off!Read full article on Community Announcements (cafebeef)AnnouncementsOfficial
Cut the Cards v0.1.8: Art polish!
Hello everyone! I've finished overhauling the entirety of the art in Cut the Cards, which included recoloring the art to fit the new color palette of the game. Since the art was drawn over such a long period of time, approaching three years at this point, it ended up losing consistency as the art style evolved over time. This update didn't result in any big changes to the existing art, but I do think it helped bring everything together. Here's a snapshot of the new combat screen, with the new Tentaculus art for good measure: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/e94d57c2902e285c7f31a821bb8a9627a5e7db5f.png I also really like how the new fire art looks: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/3fc63c4c03278e4cf2b66eef71a19a5177e4405a.png Here's the old art for comparison, where it was just some incoherent spikes: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/8b8b5e0303369647f7c8ebbec7d896c972d3f9fd.png This update did delay some of the balancing that I still need to get to. I also have some ideas for new cards. I can't wait to show those off next time!Read full article on Community Announcements (cafebeef)AnnouncementsOfficial
Cut the Cards v0.1.7: New in-game localizations!
Hello everyone, and happy new year! I decided to get into the weeds with localizing the game into a number of languages, and it's nearly complete. You can already see the translations on the Steam page itself. Here's a teaser of some in-game menus (the cards themselves are also localized, which was the hardest part): {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/f493d32ca8c290c34b8383f7d69aefcc95d950a1.png As usual, this update took longer than expected, but I think the results were worth it. There are still some balancing issues and quality-of-life features I'm want to wrap up before the public release of the demo, but it should be ready soon. Next time, I'll show off some of the cool new elemental mechanics.Read full article on Community Announcements (cafebeef)AnnouncementsOfficial
Cut the Cards v0.1.5: Art overhaul, full controller support, and more!
Hello everyone! I've been working hard on Cut the Cards over the past year, despite the lack of recent updates. Finally, Cut the Cards has full controller support, and the art rework is done! I've uploaded this build as v0.1.5 for playtesters. This is the largest update to date, with something like 10000 lines of code and 300 art assets added since v0.1.4. There's been a ton of stuff changed, way too much to list, but I'll just show off a quick screen grab for now: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44866558/129db1a060dbff8f9f32295025d317a2bad489d1.png After this, I anticipate there only being 1-2 more updates before I can release the demo publicly. Regarding the full game's release date, I've tentatively moved it to 2026. When I originally published the release date as 2025, I thought I would be working on this game full-time. However, I received an employment offer that was too good to turn down, so I've been continuing to work on Cut the Cards part-time ever since. I am the only developer working on this project, so I hope you can understand the delay :)Read full article on Community Announcements (cafebeef)
