About this game

We're Getting Deeper Into The Abyss is a story-based game that focuses on the main character Frei Kay, an artist who creates through inspiration throughout the world around him. Sometimes, he tends to space out and the world changes around him. Creating what he calls in his journal the Abyss.

Follow along the story while you, the player can explore these special Abyss areas, these tell stories about who Frei Kay really is and what he tends to experience on a personal level.

Frei, an inspiring musical artist. Who tends to think about the little things a bit too much. Others consider him a gentle soul and quiet, while he would consider himself talkative. Yet, He'd describe himself as timid, though people see him always throwing himself into situations to please others if they are distressed, even if it stresses himself out. Being a well-known fellow around town, his goal was always to spread his musical voice.

What's The Features?

  • A rich story, with a unique world to explore. Multiple side stories with an opportunity to learn more about the world, and several different characters around you. All with different personalities. Take a break from the story and play a select few mini games around the town. Learn about the town you're in, go to the library and read some stuff, they may bring Frei into a creative state of mind!

  • A day and night system. Some side-objectives and characters can appear in the day or night. While this is frustrating in some other games, the day and night system is designed to be unique, fair, and overall, a different experience than others. Time skipping will be available and real-time. If the player has beaten every side-objective in the day, they can skip right to night by time-skipping.

NOTE: To learn more about this mechanic in detail, read into DEVLOG #13 - A List Of Future Mechanics!

  • Different art-styles are going to be presented in the game, such as in the Abyss, mini-games, and in the main area where Frei will journey through, the Town of Heaven, previously known as the Village of Rapture.

  • The world is meant to be explored, as you'll experience multiple emotions here. Comedic, fear, disgust, it goes on! The world is full of lovely things to do other than just the story.

  • The guitar Frei Kay carries guides you; players will earn multiple things throughout the game that will make playing more enjoyable. Such as higher jumping, running faster, getting onto higher things, y'know, fun stuff like that. Music is a powerful thing!

 So much more!

DEV NOTE:

This is a passion project, the game has been in mind since 2017, just starting in 2023. Updates are going to go to the Steam Page/Discord. The art here is NOT final, these are all placeholders. Expect better art. Most likely, these screenshots here are already outdated. I HIGHLY recommend taking a look at the DEVLOGs posted in the News Tab on Steam.

Minimum System Requirements are speculated for now, but I'd say maximum could be wrong, I am using a 3060 and 5600x, and the game is over 140fps in all resolutions. Early development though. The game is being developed in 1080p, I'll be testing in all resolutions (1080, 2k, 4k.) I do not test in 8k, but if someone requests that they'd like me to optimize for 8k, I will absolutely dedicate my time for you. Let me know. Even Steam Deck testing. Further testing will be done down the line.

This game is actively in development and will take some time. This is being developed by a single fellow! Check out the Discord if you have any big questions or requests. Thank you!

Devlog #13 - A List Of Future Mechanics | New Screenshots!

Heyo again, let's get into the yap session. Over the years, We're Getting Deeper Into The Abyss has changed. I'd like to think it has changed while developing it now. Originally, the game was meant to be a horror game while discussing mental health. While I wasn't happy with the idea of that, I feel a few horror games do that well already, and if you played horror games yourself, you can definitely name some. Silent Hill 2 being one of them or the Outlast Series. I feel I had a weird approach to it, so I'm happy to discuss what I originally had. I even have old development screenshots and when I decided to scrap them. Originally, the game you started off in a hospital, still playing as the main character you do as today, Frei Kay. Funny enough, he hasn't changed one bit. Kinda. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/f15160c07eb7a6daf884c274376dfa39df1c18e9.png This photo, he is on the stage, a flat lil' guy. The design was going to be different, flat colors and flat characters. It was heavily inspired by Gregory Horror Show. Funny, because I never saw much of the series, just the style. I enjoy it a lot. Props to the artists. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/95d920b0cca5c0b38892f861da738bf52702a235.png Early development was just models I never knew how to make and from Sketchup 3D Warehouse for templates until I learned how to do it, (congrats me, y'did it!) I can make 3D stuff now, everything you see in the screenshots for Steam are created by me with no assistance from AI. Eventually, I'll bring on some smaller artists. I felt like the original story was too dark, and maybe I'll bring it to the light of day sometime. It is something I would like to discuss later on without deep detail, I would like to state I wrote this story multiple times and it has gone through many themes. That's why I think it is going to be unique, because it involves several themes at the end of the day. Let me show you some before/afters. This game was originally shown off pretty early on, and the terrain...

Devlog #12 - Model Progress | Demo Talk | Overall Development

Heyo peeps! It's back to the grind. So, let me show you what I've finally made progress on. I found something I've been happy to work with, for a long while I've been struggling on my modeling skills and what I want for the style of the town. But thankfully, I feel like I got a good style for the game. I might also go with a complete redesign of the game when it comes to art. Originally, the game was meant to be textures that were real looking. But uh, dunno what I was going for on that. I guess the high PBR world got to me. And I want to keep the style of the game real and still kinda cartoonish, but still dark in some areas and light. So, I might go over everything and hand paint the textures by color instead of a premade substance material. I'll update people on this. Take a look at the first ever model I created for the jazz club building, it sucks, right? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/57aaeaff9e3faa11d4a9cf9ae5a419f90237cec5.png Now, I have something even better to represent. While it isn't finished, It's going to be way more better down the line. Take a look at one of the buildings I have in the game and I'll share off way more down the line. Obviously, to some people, this isn't that interesting, but to me, I'd like to share off any game development progress. All is history and it is amazing how interesting this can be down til the end. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/c737e9fc2fa11160c27ad51cc915a03dcd4605ec.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/a65d28d77c04241b89ff560254add3575a833ec8.png I also had an idea with the models to add something interesting to try out. When going up to the building door, it'll transition to a door opening animation and bwomp, just a small and nice detail instead of somethin' like HOLD "E". I love when games look more alive. Here's an example: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/8e34c443813b599007e3d71e4eb2cbbd92d692b0.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/38fcb95e8749e39b528cd5556053d91b5e1f6840.png Now to the demo part, I've been writing the story of the ...

Devlog #11 - What is WGDITA? The Artist Initiative, who is Frei? Lot more!

Heyo, heyo. So it's been a good minute! But back to it. Let's start with the fun interesting stuff. I keep mentioning GRAPHICAL CHANGES! But hey, instead of mentioning this stuff constantly, I'm just going to say this. THIS GAME IS GOING TO CONSTANTLY CHANGE VISUALLY. It is in development after all, and I'm still experimenting with the style of the game. And I'd like to talk about something. THE ARTIST INITIATIVE! So, what I mean by this is uh, well. Originally, I wanted to work on this game alone, and I still do, won't lie. But, I have been inspired by some other artists and their lovely stories. And I'd love to have some artist around (whether it be music, 2D, 3D art, or even writing) have their work featured in the game. What do I also mean by this? Well, I have an idea where you can waddle around the town and see posters, maybe even movies in a theater. I'd LOVE to have some other smaller creators featured if I enjoy their work and have it plastered around the town. For the people who are probably feeling iffy about this, I wouldn't feel too worried. Because if I do anything about this, I'd only like it to be on in-game CDs, posters, or like I said, small 2-5 minute animations of an in-game theater where players can watch. Soon, I'll be talking more about this. OKAY! What is WE'RE GETTING DEEPER INTO THE ABYSS? I get asked this question a bit, and I'd like to finally answer this question without stuttering. We're Getting Deeper Into The Abyss is a story-based, interactive 2.5D adventure game. Focused on characters, music, and the world around you. There will be secrets, side-stories, and a main story. Follow the story of a lone music artist, Frei Kay. Who sometimes falls in and out of the "abyss." There is no timer, it's all open world exploration. If I had to compare a couple games, then take a look. - NIGHT IN THE WOODS - THE "YAKUZA" SERIES I plan for the game to be as unique as possible. Prefer to not reuse assets, and not buy any game ready assets. Also, if...

Devlog #10 - Video Essay, Environment Changes, Artstyle Rework Announcement, etc

Heyoooo, another day, another devlog. THE VIDEO! This time, I got a video for ya. If you got an hour to spare, I discuss WE'RE GETTING DEEPER INTO THE ABYSS near the end of the video, even showing off a new character design from 2018. But I plan on putting them in the game, fun fun. It talks about the games I worked on over the years and me as an artist, I didn't get too deep into this game, but it does have some details in the game and what the gameplay will be about. But if you're following this game consistently, then hey. You may already know! I feel video form is better! I suck at explaining since my ADHD lets me yap and I feel I may be rude sometimes when I don't mean to be, haha. I just suck at talking to others. Anyway, let's get into this one. LOTTA NEW STUFF. AND I MEAN A LOT. ENVIRONMENT STUFF! So, okay. I've been working on trees, grass, and adding a lot of those over the time. It's been kinda... Repetitive to say the least. But this is something that makes the world look more nicer. I don't want to have the same single tree placed and same single grass model placed constantly. So, this is what I'm working on. What happened to the buildings I was working on? Don't worry! These are being worked on constantly. I figured I need to make the world look nicer, and to do that, foliage was a focus. The foliage are painted in Substance painter, or Krita. - Trees = Substance Painter - Grass = Substance Painter - Leaf Textures = Krita The cool thing about the grass too, it has collision! So when the player steps on them, it squishes! Kinda cool, just a small detail. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/0c3f631db4d603fc261b85e44c2452706a189a60.gif Also, when you get too close to a certain object, like a tree for an example it has an effect to where it'll disappear / fade away. This is just something that's common in games now, or sometimes it won't in games? I've seen the camera in games just have collision and bump against walls and get closer to the player, this game won't...

BIG Devlog #9 - More Model Progress, Baked Lighting, Gameplay Elements, ETC.

Heyo! This DEVLOG I got a lot to show off, it's been a minute and I also said in the last one I was going to do a video, but won't lie, it was a lot of editing, so uh. I'll continue working on it and post it soon enough. So this will do for now. I don't want to focus my time into over editing for comedic effects and just get into the details. But this game idea was in development since 2019, so I could really make a documentary when it releases, haha. Anyway, let's get into this. Previously, I showed off a really bad model and I kinda regret it. Remember this bad goofy looking model? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/0968ac5b03a6a9cad4a413360287883b4c2eb336.png Yeah, I decided it looked... Really plain, and bad looking. It wasn't even finished either, because in the final game, I want it to look extremely busy. As it's a night club, after all. So, the outside will be covered with posters, the building won't be flat looking, and it will overall be my favorite building in the entire game personally. So, I want to spend some time on this. SO! I decided to re-model it completely. Let's take a look. But, I have some news about this model as well. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/368510f3dfb93949a4818f002d7b8d00b1fc6201.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/57aaeaff9e3faa11d4a9cf9ae5a419f90237cec5.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/8968cea97c181d3d61c15430e5559b61dbe71a81.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/8968cea97c181d3d61c15430e5559b61dbe71a81.png So, this looks... A bit better. But I won't lie, I'm still learning the software that's a pain known as MAYA. And guess what, I'm not satisfied with this building either. But I'm getting there. I'm thinking of just restarting this final building one last time. I was happy with this building for around 5 minutes. Until I started modeling the next building. And then I finally found my issue with what made these models look so... Plain. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/565e229e37c61830ba6621468ecd1a9c4d44f09e.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44789794/eb46dcda85f1a82...
