Messy Bonds: Writing Family in Crown of Exile

When we think about family arcs in interactive fiction, they often follow one of two neat paths: either everything is repaired with a single emotional conversation and everyone is happy again, or the bond is broken forever and there’s no space left to rebuild. Both are satisfying in their way — clear, simple, and easy for players to understand. But in Crown of Exile, I wanted something different. Families in real life don’t usually break or heal in such a clean way. They’re messy, complicated, and contradictory — and sometimes the most honest stories are the ones that sit in that uncomfortable middle ground.Siduri: The Glue of the Family 🪡Siduri, the MC’s grandmother, is often described as the 'glue' holding the family together. She isn’t naïve; she knows the family she once dreamed of doesn’t exist anymore. But her desire for normalcy isn’t about pretending nothing happened — it’s about refusing to let grief and resentment be the only things her grandchildren inherit. She stitches the family back together in small ways, the same way she mends her son’s tunics: not to erase the wear and tear, but to keep things from falling apart completely. Her strength is quiet, her hope stubborn, and her love relentless. For Siduri, family isn’t about perfection — it’s about endurance.Salyra: A Mother in the Shadow of Guilt 🌒Salyra, the MC’s mother, is harder to understand. Some players see her as cold, or even careless. After all, she left her child behind for twenty years — how can she just step back into their life as though nothing has changed? But Salyra’s behaviour comes from guilt and fear, not arrogance. She left to protect her child, and though her reasoning was born of love, the wound of her absence only deepened as the years passed. When faced with her grown child again, pretending their bond is intact is the only way she knows how to cope. To admit the distance would be to admit the pain she caused — and she doesn’t know how to carry that.In her heart, the love never vani...

🌍 Dive Into the World of Crown of Exile – Meet the Kingdoms

To celebrate all the love and support since the launch of our Steam page, I wanted to share a bit of the world you’ll be stepping into when Crown of Exile releases. Here's a peek at the three major regions shaping the world—and the fate of your character.🟡 Cyre – “Conquered by None”Once a sprawling, united kingdom, Cyre now teeters between tradition and tyranny. Once a place of diverse beliefs, it now enforces worship of a single god—Solus—under royal decree. With eight major cities and a Mediterranean climate, Cyre is a land of golden feasts, sun temples, and simmering rebellion.Population: 50–80 millionReligion: Monotheistic worship of Solus; ancient gods worshipped in secretCuisine: Coastal seafood, spiced dishes, and seasonal feastsSymbol: A ringed sun, representing Solus’s reach🟢 Vinia – “Strength in Unity”Bordering Cyre to the south, Vinia is a neutral, multicultural kingdom. It's become a haven for those fleeing Cyre’s religious crackdowns. Its 15 major cities range from tundra outposts to bustling trade ports, and it welcomes all faiths—from the Ancient Ones to the Twelve.Population: 80–100 millionReligion: Open practice of any belief systemCuisine: Spiced, dairy-rich, and diverse thanks to major trade routesSymbol: Three spirals joined in a cosmic circle, symbolising universal connection🔴 Ishari – “Risen to the Stars”Once a city under Cyre’s domain, Ishari won its freedom in a civil war known as the Battle of the Bridge. Built between three rivers and fiercely spiritual, Ishari remains the last sanctuary of the Ancient Ones, with a culture shaped by sacrifice, star-worship, and survival.Population: ~80,000 before independence; ~10,000 afterReligion: Polytheistic worship of the Ancient OnesCuisine: Rich in grains, spiced vegetables and meatsSymbol: A serpent beneath the stars—life descending from the cosmos✨This is just the beginning of the worldbuilding you’ll experience. Every kingdom has secrets, and every region has its cost. Who will you trust—and where...
