Embark on a solo or cooperative journey through Lost Legions, where you build camps, fight mythical foes, and defend against raids in an open-world Roman adventure.

About this game

"The Eagles Are Lost"

Three Roman Legions have been destroyed

In the aftermath of the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, you are among the few who remain, stranded in a hostile wilderness that feels familiar, yet deeply wrong. Hunted by enemy tribes and stripped of your gear, survival alone will not be enough.

Gather what you can, raise fortified camps, and rally scattered legionaries to your side. From crude tools and bare skin to iron and mail, rely on your Roman training to endure, adapt, and uncover the truth behind your destiny.

The lost eagle standards must be found. More than honor demands it.

Play alone or with up to 3 friends as you survive and push deeper into enemy territory.

A Tale of Fate and Deception

Experience a unique blend of narrative-driven adventure and open-world survival crafting. Climb the ranks and journey through six distinct biomes, each advancing the story as you uncover a world that feels like an ancient Roman fairy tale, dark, mysterious, and full of hidden truths.

Meet over 20 enigmatic characters, including Legate Publius Quinctilius Varus. Form alliances, question loyalties, and navigate a story shaped by twists, revelations, and shifting motives. In this world, few are what they seem.

Rally Your Fellow Legionaries

You won’t survive alone for long.

As you explore the wilderness, you’ll encounter scattered survivors of the fallen legions. Free them, earn their trust, and uncover their stories through dedicated questlines.

Some will fight alongside you in battle or offer valuable knowledge, while others find refuge in your camp. Each brings their own perspective on the world, and the fate that awaits you.

Fight to Survive

The land is unforgiving and never under Roman control.

Hunt, gather, craft, and endure. Face hostile tribes, the Cherusci, Marsi, and Chatti, each with distinct gear and combat styles.

Defeat them to claim their equipment, complete your collection, and unlock improved versions through your progression.

Adapt or fall

Explore a World Shaped by War and Mystery

Venture through six distinct biomes, from quiet meadows and dense forests to treacherous swamps, towering mountains, and war-torn fields. The land bears the scars of a lost campaign, yet not everything belongs where it should.

Discover abandoned camps, hidden landmarks, and places that defy explanation. Track wildlife, gather rare resources, and solve environmental riddles to uncover powerful artifacts and secret paths.

Every journey beyond your camp is a risk, but those who explore will find the knowledge and strength needed to face what lies ahead.

Fortify and Defend Your Camps

Build strongholds across the land.

Construct Roman fortifications, set up specialized workstations, and craft increasingly advanced gear. When warbands signal their approach, prepare your defenses.

They will come for your camp - stand your ground!

Alone or in Brotherhood

Play solo or with up to 3 others in co-op multiplayer.

Choose from distinct characters including members of the civilian convoy who marched with the legions and face the unknown together.

Join a shared, host-led campaign where progression and decisions shape the journey for the entire group.

Ave, Legionaries! Gamescom is almost here, and things have been pretty busy at Tarock. Before we get into that, though, we recently crossed a pretty incredible milestone: 100,000 wishlists on Steam! 🎉 That's a huge number for us, and we want to say a massive thank you to everyone who's wishlisted the game, followed our development, joined our community, shared our posts, or simply told a friend about Lost Legions. It genuinely means a lot to our small team. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44992326/beb6260906e25125cb3197126651c2316f5c9c52.gif And now, on to Gamescom! This year, Lost Legions will have a booth at Gamescom, and if you're heading to Cologne, you'll be able to stop by, meet some of us, and, most importantly, play Lost Legions for yourself. ⚔️ We've been hard at work preparing the Gamescom demo, alongside a brand-new trailer that shows off some of what we've been working on lately. And there's quite a bit to talk about. A Camp Worth Defending One of the things we've been thinking about a lot is what it actually means to build a base in Lost Legions. With our previous building system, we kept running into the same problem: players would either build very little, or eventually end up with something resembling the familiar log cabin you see in many survival games. There's nothing wrong with a good log cabin. But you're a Roman legionary. Roman legionaries weren't exactly famous for wandering into Germania and building themselves cozy little houses. They built military camps. So we went back to the drawing board. Your base in Lost Legions is now becoming a proper Roman marching camp, inspired by the standardized layouts Roman armies used throughout the Empire. Instead of our previous modular approach, we're moving to a slot-based building system. Your camp provides designated spaces that you can develop with crafting tents, quarters, workstations, and other structures needed by the legionaries under your command. The result is something that looks and feels much more disti...

    Dev Blog 48

Hey everyone, It’s been a while since I last had a turn writing a blog for Lost Legions. I’ve been too busy in the pixel mines over the last couple of months. About two weeks ago, we had an all-hands-on-deck meeting with our team, which normally works remotely, and it was so energising that I couldn’t wait to write about it here. The reason we met wasn’t necessarily a good one. With a launch date planned for July, there was a growing unease within the team that something in the game was missing. We have a lot of nice systems, but somehow they don’t click together perfectly yet. The latest friends-and-family test also yielded unsatisfying feedback. So the idea was to use all the brainpower available during a two-day workshop to identify the pain points and devise solutions. And boy, did we find pain points on day one! When you want to make a game better, it’s best not to pull any punches. Did it hurt? Yes. Did some of us have to kill our babies? Definitely. Did it lead to amazing solutions on the second day and end up being an overall super motivating event? Absolutely! If you look at it from a distance, the issues could be boiled down to two things: 1. The game needs a lot more polish, feedback, and signposting. It also needs to teach players better about the many things they can do. Examples: You can throw spears to break shields, and it feels super fun. But only very few players ever figured out they could do it. There is a great combo system in our combat, but you can’t cleanly transition out of all states, which breaks your flow after a shield bash, for example. (I fixed that one myself in the meantime.) {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44992326/426fb3ea2156b58126b54e6b964e4d34a672311d.jpg 2. The game doesn’t do a great job of making you feel like a Roman. Sure, there is an amazing sequence at the beginning of the game where you actually live through the worst parts of the Battle of Teutoburg, but after that — because this is how we all experienced survival games — you get th...

Hey everyone, Before we jump into this week’s update, we first want to say thank you. Lost Legions has now passed 80,000 wishlists on Steam, and seeing so many people excited for the game means a lot to us. We’re incredibly grateful for all the support and feedback you’ve given us so far. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44992326/2c697a0859e64e51ed3b5db236b50a70c90bca57.jpg Over the past few weeks, a big part of our work has been deciding what the Early Access version of Lost Legions should focus on most. That meant making some difficult choices internally and setting aside ideas that, while cool, did not directly improve the main player experience. The result is a much clearer direction for the game. Sharpening the Main Gameplay Experience One of our biggest goals recently has been making the gameplay feel more focused and rewarding. The main experience is now built around a clearer gameplay flow: Build and defend your camp Improve your gear, crafting, and gathering Venture into the wilderness Attack or infiltrate dangerous locations Secure resources and story progress Return home, upgrade, and prepare for your next expedition This gives the game a much stronger sense of progression and helps connect combat, exploration, crafting, and base-building into one more cohesive experience. We have also tied important rewards, progression, and story moments more closely to handcrafted locations across the world, making exploration feel more meaningful. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44992326/16c685cd5fced7d1f2f4f9b2824313387463f25c.jpg Making the World Feel More Unique Another major focus has been improving the overall presentation of the game. We want Lost Legions to feel less generic and much more rooted in its Roman and Germanic setting, so we are currently improving things like: UI and menus naming and terminology visual effects and presentation dialogue and story pacing Our goal is simple: Romans should feel Roman. Germanic tribes should feel Germanic. We want the world and its characters to f...

Interview with Game Producer Martin Welcome back to our blog series, where we introduce the people working on Lost Legions. In these short interviews, team members talk about what they are currently working on, what excites them, and how the game is coming together behind the scenes. Introduce yourself: Hey, I am Martin. I am the Game Producer at Tarock Interactive, and I have been working on Lost Legions for about six months now. I started with three months as an intern and then moved into a full-time position. My job is mainly about keeping the project moving forward. I help structure planning, support the Game Directors, prepare and run meetings, and make sure communication inside the team works smoothly. When questions come up about where the project is headed, why certain decisions were made, or what the current status of a feature is, I am usually the person who either has the answer or knows who to ask. What I enjoy most is seeing progress. When the team builds something cool and you can actually see it appear in the game, and the game gets better because of it, that is the most rewarding part of the job for me. What are you working on right now, and why are you excited about it? At this exact moment, I am responsible for making sure these blog posts keep coming and for running the interviews. Since our community manager Bat El recently had a baby, I have taken over that part for now. On the game side, my main focus is preparing the upcoming combat rework. Our current combat system is fairly straightforward, and early next year we want to give it much more depth and challenge, together with feedback from the community. We are taking inspiration from games like God of War, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Batman: Arkham Knight. Right now, I am laying the foundation for that work. I am documenting player abilities, camera behavior, enemy signals, and the overall intent behind the system. The goal is combat that feels clear and readable, where players react to what enemie...

    Weekly Blog 45

Welcome to our new blog series where we share short interviews with the people creating Lost Legions. Each post gives someone from the team a chance to talk about what they’re working on, what they enjoy, and what challenges they face. We hope this format gives you a fresh and personal look at how the game grows. Introduce yourself: Hi, I’m Ruben. I’m a Junior Level Designer at Tarock Interactive, and I’ve been working on Lost Legions for the last 6 months. I started as an intern in summer and apparently made a name for myself, because I was offered a junior position shortly after. In my time here I learned a lot about building an open world. What I enjoy most is giving players a good experience when they explore the game. My main job is to plan and structure the world, especially the points of interest like enemy camps or places where players can find loot. What are you working on right now, and why are you excited about it? Right now, I’m working on the first big biome, the Meadows. Inside this biome, we have different sub-areas, and at the moment I’m building a bigger Germanic camp. It’s a lot of fun to plan this camp so that it works well for gameplay and player guidance. I’m also very excited to see how it will hold up during the upcoming playtests and what players will do in this place. I’m really looking forward to that. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44992326/d4b858d3ae7985efde3e4c27d2462db9a272270b.jpg What challenges do you have at the moment, and how do you solve them? This Germanic camp is special because it is part of a stealth mission. So the layout needs to be different from the normal camps in the world. For this, I had to do some research again, because I’m still learning a lot as a junior. I looked into how stealth gameplay works, what players need, and how cover is usually placed. Now I try to use that knowledge. For example I place tents so players can use them as hiding spots or sneak around. In other camps, open combat is normal, but here stealth also need...
