About this game

Experiment, Explore, and Swap in Cavern, a roguelike sandbox.

Join a rag tag group of cavers on a mission to data log and film Mirror Cavern for a new Television Special!

(funded by yours truly... the Geo Cave Survey.)

Cavern - a Roguelike Sandbox

Every situation presents a unique challenge and a unique solution whether you decide to fight or meddle. Each character has the ability to swap out objects in the game at will, and gains more swaps along the way to pair with their playstyle. As you go deeper into the Cavern, the level generation becomes more chaotic, and you will gain more control...

Break the game by putting objects where they were never intended to be!

Find unique interactions in an immersive world...

Swap a rock into a bomb to clear terrain,

Swap a harmless pot into a slime to fight on your side,

Swap a skeleton's sword into a useless stick,

Swap cobwebs into shiny gems to distract an enemy...

And push the limits of the game with crazy combinations and absurd strategies...

Strap a rocket to your back to run super fast,

Spawn tons of stalactites to one shot enemies,

Swap stun grenades to stun-lock foes,

Swap enemy projectiles into infinite health potions,

Stack equip-able weapons to get absurd range...

    Dev Update - 08/24/26

Hello All,This is Brendan, the dev of Cavern. Thank you for the continued support.I've been hard at work polishing and tweaking things based on continued demo feedback, but I've also been adding tons of new content. New areas, new enemies, new objects and upgrades to combo. While the work on the new areas is a bit "head down" I'm still posting semi regular updates to the YouTube channel. You can find a bit more in depth coverage there.Recent behind the scenes updates include:Entire game scoped / designed on paperEntire script finishedGraveyard / Brimstone area (area 2)New enemiesNew boss2 new playable characters (6/7 planned for final release)40 new upgrades of varying usefulness... (~90/140 planned for release)New situational / clearer upgrade classesProgress on area 3 (3/5 planned for release)Hopefully this gives you a sense of where I'm at. I was originally planning for end of 2026, and the content should accelerate in terms of time spent to implement due to the previous systems being used, but I'll keep the timeline updated and have a harder release date in the future. If you would like more consistent updates, I have some streams on the channel as well that relate to development, where you can have a more active role in decisions and ideas. I try to stream Thursdays.Lastly, I'm going to try to have a updated playtest for each area so that I can stress test the game, and balance things as I go with some hands on feedback. Stay tuned for that here!Again, thank you for the continued support as I chase this dream. Cheers,Brendan

    Controller Support!

Hello All!I've added a few things to this cavern update, namely Controller Support. It is a tad rough around the edges when it comes to menus (settings etc.) but all the functionality is accessible. Let me know what you think about the controller features, and rewatch the tutorial with a controller active to get some more insight into the controls. Otherwise this patch has some small balance changes.Cheers,Brendan

    Demo Update v0.9.21

Hello All!Thanks for picking up the Next Fest Demo of Cavern. I hope you all had a good time with it. Among a few crashes and poor experiences, the feedback I got was mostly positive and excited! I've tried to help new players get started with a better (more forced) tutorial with more explanation and imagery. I think this should help a lot. Let me know!I've added a few other small changes:Better character descriptions for all charactersHover over the player portrait for desc.Rocks in the main menu start as invulnerable, so you cant strand yourself without swapping.cobwebs slow lessunique Upgrade rooms now properly load! (more floor variation, and some special traps)Mina buff (arrow gets a +1 damage mod, so that all types of damage are slightly more effective on Mina).Burn change - burn is slower and only ticks once (dealing 1 fire damage) but can stack!Poison change - can stackNew upgrade - Disguise (enemies have a chance not to notice youPoison dart changes - can "backstab" enemies, dealing extra damage to enemies that are not targeting you actively.Charge Module - an early shield based swap you can get to generate shields on status cooldown.Mini Antidote - an early anti status effect swap you can get, eliminates one bad status effect.Wooden Key - early key swap, 20% chance to unlock a chest with a gold lock. Dirt Bomb - a way to generate rocksEdge tile optimizations! All health upgrades now healThanks for checking it out. I'm planning to do a huge rework of the "Equip" and "Pickup" system to merge the two. Making it simpler for new players, and more intuitive as a whole. It will buff and change many of the characters early, (POJ-II is a problem) but I will find better ways to balance that after. The core experience should be fluid and seamless, and the balance has to support that.I'll keep ya'll updated on the youtube!Cheers,BrendanDogmaQuest
