Devlopment Log: Online Multiplayer and Early Access Launch

Greetings everyone! We have been hard at work implementing the online multiplayer and integrating matchmaking into Mansion At Midnight over the last few weeks. Don began with testing the main multiplayer gameplay in a LAN environment, and then over the weekend he began plugging in the Steam matchmaking code to make an easy-to-use interface for players. There are a lot of kinks to work out, but the bare bones of matchmaking through Steam have been implemented and is moving into to testing. We will be reaching out to testers and influencers soon for help in testing in a closed beta in an attempt to iron out some major bugs with the Steam online matchmaking. However, we have been working in an attempt to have the game out in Early Access in time for Halloween, and from our current position it is likely Mansion At Midnight will be available no sooner than October 30th, 2024. We will likely release the game at 10am PST, but it is best to keep an eye on our social media for alerts, and watch our Steam page here for notifications. Another exciting feature we have been working on is adding all of the dialog and voice lines to the game. This could not be possible without the help of our community, and we wanted to take this time to acknowledge and thank the individuals who volunteered their voice to the game! We also want to thank MagnaNUMArts, Cranberri_Inari, and VeryCherri for their contributions to the project via commissioned artwork, thank you. Whether we are able to make the October 30th release, or if we have to release to a little later, we want to thank you all for your support and for cheering us on as we work on this proje...

    Development Log: Haunts and Monsters

Greetings everyone! Over the past week our duo team made substantial progress on the haunts and monsters in Mansion At Midnight. For those unaware, the basic game loop of a multiplayer game of Mansion At Midnight goes a bit like this: Round starts, all players are locked in the mansion. They must search for an item to help them escape before time runs out One of these items is cursed and when a player picks up this item the haunt will start. Haunts are based on the item that is cursed. For instance, if the Bloodstone is cursed, the player who picks it up will become a Werewolf. At this point, the players that where not cursed (survivors) are given a set of tasks to complete to win the game, and escape. Likewise, the player who was cursed has their own set of objectives to complete and win. The objectives *are different for each haunt* with the goal of defeating each other with wits, combat, and strategy. The winner will emerge victorious, and the games can begin again. As you can imagine, with multiple different haunts (5 haunts planned for the Early Access launch, and 10 haunts for the full release) to complete with their own unique win conditions, this meant a lot to set up and connect to work properly from server to host while integrating multiplayer. While Don, our programmer and lead designer, was hard at work making connections to complete the multiple haunts, I was working on making sure the stars of the show the monsters looked and worked their best for the game. These are some of the Monsters you will transform into if you are the unfortunate (or fortunate, if you want to fight your friends) player to be cursed. With the haunts well in progress with testing and finishing touches to complete, we wanted to turn to our roadmap for launch and give you all an idea of what we have left to complete the game and launch into Early Access. Early Access Launch Tasks to complete: Player death and respawn Player shout location ping Player damaging enemies Update player ...

    Development Log: The Mystic Room

Greetings everyone! This week we have been hard at work on one of the more complicated characters in Mansion At Midnight...The house itself. There are 29 room tiles that can spawn randomly to generate a game map. One of these room tiles does not like to stay put. This is of course the mystic room. The mystic room is a room tile that will teleport all players inside it to another location within the the house, providing a means of escaping captors, or the freedom to explore new areas when the staircase is occupied with unfriendly spirits. Don began with concepting the mystic rooms behavior, then built the room into the random generator making sure the mystic room could travel with all the players inside without issue. It will take a few weeks of testing to get things working perfectly, but from concept to testing, Don was able to get the room working by the end of the week. While Don was hard at work with the mystic room, I began one of the other tasks on our list: Updating player models and animations. I started by looking at all the player character models, then began drawing new reference sheets so that they could be re-molded in greater detail. I was only able to complete one character sheet, so we will see what more I can complete in the next few weeks. As August comes close to an end we look back on the progress we've made with a sigh of relief, however looking forward at our list of to-do's September is going to be very busy! We hope you continue to look forward to what we will make next. Thanks for reading! - Meg (and Don) Game Grotto Development Team

    Development Log: Multiplayer and Items

Greetings everyone! We've been hard at work getting Mansion At Midnight ready for its launch this October into Early Access here on Steam. Our first hurdle was learning how to use and implement Unity's Mirror asset into the game and allow peer-to-peer multiplayer (via IP address to start) I'll admit there was definitely a learning curve. Once Don started to get the hang of how Mirror identified and arranged its systems, he began fitting the existing game objects with "online versions" something that at first Mirror was a bit confused by. Most games nowadays are only online or only offline. Seeing as MAM is *both* there was not a lot of information on how to organize game functions. Which of course meant Don adapted, and figured it out with trial and error, and sorting his own game functions, both online and offline, in a way that made Mirror happy. The long and the short of it is, this process took lots of time but through hard work and dedication, Don was able to achieve the multiplayer gameplay we were looking for. This video below shows some gameplay footage of multiple players moving on screen, switching items, and picking up items a huge step in the right direction for development. Now that we have taken the time to adjust our feet and begin putting our best foot forward - here are a few of the next steps we'll be taking to complete the multiplayer mode of MAM. - Player death and respawn - Player shout location ping - Player damaging enemies - Update player models and animations - Update and add enemy models and variants - Create the Haunt Manager - Monster abilities and transformations - 2nd pass on all particle effects and audio - Objective UI - Testing and debugging There are also various additional tweaks and adjustments not listed, but hopefully you are starting to get an idea and a roadmap for the game. We hope you all enjoy these weekly updates and are looking forward to being a part of the development process! Don't forget you can share and talk all thi...
