About this game
The Chess pieces you know, but with an addictive puzzle-game twist! You must get the highest score possible while also leaving yourself the material to capture the king.
Do I Need To Know Chess?
We hear this question a lot. The answer is simple: no! Chess Mess will teach you everything you need to know with move indicators and our tutorial system.
Puzzle Game Madness
You control both white and black pieces. Each piece moves how you would expect: knights make an L shape, rooks move in straight lines, etc. What's different is the quantity and placement of the pieces. Each level features a board featuring a randomly generated piece layout which pose a progressively harder challenge as you advance through the game.
Meet the Par Score
Each board has a Par Score that needs to be cleared in order to enter the King phase. Clear the Par Score in as few moves as possible for the most bragging rights!
Summon The King
The King will appear on the board after the par score is met--and the King is out for blood! Use your remaining pieces to capture him and put an end to his rampage!
Earn Cards
When you beat a level you earn cards which can buff or nerf (or sometimes both) specific pieces. Cards can stack, too! But watch out for curses, as they can add a serious wrinkle to the gameplay!
Infinite Replayability
Use a seed or start a New Game and discover a unique, procedurally generated set of boards that present their own unique challenges.
Share Boards
Boards are generated based on seeds and these seeds are shareable with your friends. Compare scores and see if you can beat the par score!
Daily Challenges
Compete with your friends with daily online challenges, leaderboards, and more!

Chess Mess beta 0.8.3b fixes
The latest Chess Mess update (0.8.3b) is here. It includes a bunch of small fixes that improve the overall gameplay experience. Enhanced the game's stability on Steam Deck. Refined the focus experience. Updated the game board to wrap selection of columns and rows. Implemented keyboard input. Most of the game is playable with just arrow keys and the enter key. Notable exceptions include: Card selection screen Card slot selection Options menu Tutorials Hints Enabled native touchscreen support Exported save data and preferences to external files that can be synced with Steam Cloud (WIP) This keyboard implementation lays the groundwork for gamepad input as well. Standard Xbox and DualSense controllers should work, but this is considered unstable and not guaranteed. Disabled the enableSteamOverlay function on Deck as this was causing the game to crash in Gamescope and it's not needed anyway. Note that the Steam Overlay is currently broken on Desktop. We're working to resolve this issue.Read full article on Community Announcements (gbryant)
