Monthly Update: Nonlinear and Merciless
Hey, privateers! This time I’m approaching development more structured and less chaotic. This whole month was dedicated to the “peaceful” side of the game — quests and dialogues.🗺️ “Quest Sandbox” I’m inspired by the spirit of freedom in Fallout 1 and 2. I’m building the system so you can do anything you want: commit genocide, star in porn, sleep with a queen, or sell your friend into slavery — all in one day if you wish.I’m experimenting at the crossroads of old-school and modern quest systems. I call it a “quest sandbox”. There won’t be a single linear plot with a final branching choice like “bad, neutral, or good ending” — instead, you’ll have tons of quests, factions, and dynamic storylines. Your entire path will shape your own ending. The world won’t revolve around the hero — it’ll react to your actions as it sees fit. For example, mouth off to the pirate leader? If you don’t have a strong fleet behind you — you’ll be tossed out into space without a second thought. You choose who to become: a tyrant conquering every faction in the sector; a family man who abandons it all to live on a remote station far from any wars; or the captain of a “generation ship” drifting off in search of a better life. Do what your head or heart tells you — but be ready for the consequences.🔭 What’s next? Next, I’ll be working on open space combat. This part will take time — so many systems have to interact to make it feel alive and thrilling. But you’ll get a lot more “watchable” content — stay tuned! Thanks for following the project and sharing your thoughts. Your comments keep me going.See you in open space, Glue_BQRead full article on Community Announcements (glue_bq)AnnouncementsOfficial
Welcome Aboard!
Hello, privateers!Starting this month, I’ve decided to post regular monthly updates to keep you informed about the project’s current state and what to expect going forward. I hope this format helps both of us stay on the same page 🚀📅 Roadmap & What’s ComingAt the beginning of the month, I outlined a two-year development roadmap. The main goal for now is the demo version, which will include:a small explorable section of space, core gameplay mechanics: boarding, space combat, a few quests, random encounters while traveling — you’ll be able to meet other ships, trade, or fight.🔧 Reviving the CodeI’ve returned to the old version of the project and began isolating the mechanics I’ll be focusing on first. The plan is to reimplement:boarding mechanics: melee combat, ranged weapons, suits and gear;open space traversal and combat — via jetpacks and starfighters;cruiser control — basic movement, navigation, and ship-to-ship battles.I’ll be covering each of these systems in more detail in upcoming updates.🧑🚀 Meet the CaptainTo show something concrete this time, here’s a first look at the player character — the ship’s captain. You’ll be able to choose gender and hairstyle. There won’t be deep visual customization like in AAA titles, but I believe this level of personalization should be enough for immersion and a strong role-playing feel. Thanks for following the development! I’d love to hear your feedback. If the game looks interesting, feel free to wishlist it — it really helps! See you next month — and good luck among the stars 🌌Glue_BQRead full article on Community Announcements (glue_bq)AnnouncementsOfficial
A New Direction and Updated Development Roadmap
Hello, privateers!I’d like to share some important news regarding the development of Privateer. At one point, I came very close to stopping work on the project altogether. There were two main reasons:I overloaded the game with too many mechanics.I ran into technical limitations of the Unreal Engine. After that, I took a nearly six-month break to reflect on the situation and find a way out of the dead end I found myself in. Now, I can confidently say: I’ve found a solution — and the energy to continue development has returned. Here are the decisions I’ve made:Reduce the project’s scope. Most likely, I’ll focus on preparing a version for Early Access or a short demo with 1–2 hours of gameplay.Cut back on some of the more ambitious features. Unfortunately, some of the previously showcased mechanics (such as seamless boarding during space combat) will either be significantly simplified or removed entirely. Instead of the boarding you saw in the trailers, there will now be a simpler teleport mechanic. These decisions are based on the fact that I’m working solo and don’t have the resources of a full team to overcome the engine’s technical limitations.Privateer is still in development and will definitely be released — just not in the near future.I’m setting a personal deadline: two years until the Early Access release. The project will be more modest than originally planned, but it will be alive — and achievable.I sincerely apologize for the delay and for the fact that some of the previously promised features are unlikely to make it into the final release. Thank you to everyone who continues to follow and support the project — it truly means a lot to me.Sincerely, Glue_BQ Developer of PrivateerRead full article on Community Announcements (glue_bq)AnnouncementsOfficial
