Monster Girl Descent Rebuild Progress Report #2
Hello Monster Girl Lovers!I'm back with another progress report for the Monster Girl Descent Unity rebuild. I'm hoping to push these out monthly where possible so that everyone knows what things are looking like.Since the last update I've been doing a lot of work on UI elements and started work on some of the town scenes. Some of the menus and other parts are VERY placeholder right now and I'm just using simple shapes and text. The plan is to build them out like this to get a rough feeling of how it should look, then replace them with proper menu graphics. I do have some wonderful UI graphics already, I just haven't swapped them in yet.The King, Butler and Princess return with some new visuals.Since I'm no longer using RPG Maker, my understanding is that some of the included graphics I was using for NPCs cannot be used anymore. So I've got a whole new set of character art to use for the townspeople of Mon.Eventually the princess will be swapped out for a different appearance as she'll have her own scene, but not just yet.I've done my best to try and make things clearer for the town upgrades, the menu is still a little messy and I only cobbled it together with basic text and buttons for now. But moving forward it'll give you more information, such as what reward you'll get from each level up, and so on.I've put a lot of focus into improving the dungeon crawling UI so that HP, EXP, consumables and gold are all visible at a glance. Again, it is a little cobbled together now but functions the way I wanted it to. I took a lot of inspiration from Slay the Spire and Vampire Crawlers and eventually came up with this overall design.I've been playing with the new UI graphics I have and been testing them out in the title screen and pause menu. This is the sort of feel I'm trying to go for. Just need to narrow it down a little more.I've also built out an entire workshop for the engine, which lets me edit cards, enemies, items and more on the fly. Not too unlike the rpg maker dat...Read full article on Community Announcements (Orcywoo)AnnouncementsOfficial
Monster Girl Descent Rebuild Progress Report #1
Hello Monster Girl Lovers,It has been a couple of weeks since I announced the engine change and remaking of Monster Girl Descent.I thought I'd post a little devlog with some screenshots to show the progress I've made since then. Whilst there's been some roadbumps and a bit of a learning curve along the way, things have still been going far better than I could have hoped. The dialogue or "event" system is now fully functional and not only displays dialogue, busts and effects but it also allows me to affect the world based on choices, almost like the RPG Maker event system but far more powerful.I've moved away from the chibi style graphics for the dungeon crawling portion of the game. NPC Characters and encounters are now shown by billboard style 2d busts in the 3d space. These busts are affected by the surrounding lighting and shadows, which hopefully makes them fit into the world without too much of a jarring contrast. They are far more versatile than the sprite sets I was using before. Plus they have been commissioned from a proper artist, so they aren't simply RTP graphics. Gobbo has a funny new look as do some of your fellow explorers and town inhabitants. (some of these will still be changed to more "saucy" designs later on, I have some small plans for making the town a little more stimulating.)Since I'm now using unity, I can improve the fidelity of the dungeon itself massively. No longer limited by 3d plugins and rpg maker mapping, the dungeon floors can be truly unique, hand crafted and filled with little objects, details and spawn points for the more randomised aspects. Boss rooms should especially have a lot more flair from now on. Things like particles, shaders and other neat little effects will be a breeze.I've been slowly but surely building and improving upon the battle system to make things easy to understand and feeling nice to play. The battle log displays a breakdown of all actions taken each turn plus the source of the damage/healing/effect. Hoverin...Read full article on Community Announcements (Orcywoo)AnnouncementsOfficial
Major Announcement: Monster Girl Descent Is Being Rebuilt in Unity
Hello Everyone,A bit of a surprise announcement for you all here.Recently, Monster Girl Descent has dropped down to mixed reviews on steam. Whilst it makes me sad, I can honestly see why. Player feedback has made it clear that several areas of Monster Girl Descent need more fundamental improvements than the current version can reasonably accommodate. So for the past few weeks/month I have been COMPLETELY remaking and rebuilding the game. The game is being rebuilt from scratch in unity. The rebuilt version will be provided to all existing owners as a free update.I am moving away from RPG Maker for the first time in my life. I love RPG Maker, it is my bread and butter and I have spent 20 years using it. But honestly at this stage, I find myself limited by it. There's a lot of engine limitations that simply don't let me live out my ideas without crazy engine modifications or without it fighting against me every step of the way.I am using the RPG Maker version as a design template and fixing up/changing a ton of the fundamental flaws along the way.In the end the game should be more stable, better optimised for all systems and also better looking and higher resolution in general as we won't be held back by RPG Maker any longer. With me rebuilding everything again, hopefully the overall gameplay design will also be more fun and rewarding.Things are going better than I ever could have dreamed, there's already a functional prototype with the card battles, dungeon exploration and even the town map which lets you move between areas. It hasn't been the easiest thing for me to learn, since I've never done something this high level before, but things are coming along SO nicely!Even the H-Scenes are working as intended! (Still needs some tweaks)This is obviously still VERY WIP so there's a ton of placeholder assets and UI right now. But the most important part is that the core game loop is already functional! There's a lot more foundational and technical work needed. Then I'll need t...Read full article on Community Announcements (Orcywoo)AnnouncementsOfficial
