About the Game

Avant-Garde: Napoleonic Battles brings you into the heart of the great Napoleonic battles, in a real-time strategy game on a hexagonal grid where every choice counts. Developed by a solo developer.

You take the place of the greatest generals of the era. You observe the terrain, sense the weather, gauge the morale of your troops, and adjust your forces. Key events unfold: the arrival of reinforcements, the death of a general, the explosion of a building… Every moment can transform the fate of the battle.

You can follow the historical course and test your strategic skills under the same conditions as your predecessors. Or you can change the outcome: reorganize your troops, experiment with troop numbers, anticipate or provoke decisive events. History is your playground, but beware, every decision has consequences.

Are you capable of surpassing Napoleon and the generals of the past and leaving your mark on history?

Key Features:

  • Historically Authentic Battles:
Fight in realistic conditions of the period: terrain, weather, units and events faithful to the battles of the Napoleonic era (1792-1815)

  • Command Key Figures:
Embody Napoleon (France) or his main rivals (England, Austria, Russia, Prussia, Piedmont, etc.) and relive their strategic decisions

  • Customizable Armies:
Customize your army and the enemy's to test alternative scenarios, explore different strategies and discover what could have changed the outcome of the battles

  • Manage Key Events:
Anticipate, trigger, or deflect the decisive moments that shaped the outcome of battles. Make the most of your historical knowledge.

  • Diverse and Detailed Units:
Infantry, sappers, cavalry, and artillery, each with its own specific strengths, weaknesses, and formations

  • Accessible Strategic Interface:
Simple or advanced orders depending on your experience with the real-time strategy genre

  • Battle-focused:
Focusing exclusively on battles, faithful to historical facts, without the cumbersome management of military campaigns

You maneuver on the same terrain as the generals of the era, under realistic weather conditions. Every enemy move follows a historical logic, and each unit possesses specific attributes: morale, ammunition, skills, and formations. History sets the stage… your decisions shape the outcome.

The battle is raging. Reinforcements arrive, buildings explode, and leaders fall in combat. You must anticipate, provoke, or avert these decisive moments. Each event presents an opportunity, or a danger, that you can exploit to gain the upper hand and transform a critical situation into a decisive victory. Make use of your historical knowledge or develop it while facing the enemy.

Clear and concise tutorial: Avant-Garde offers a simple learning curve, thanks to its step-by-step tutorial, so every player can quickly grasp the game mechanics.

Two attack modes:

  • Simplified orders, where a single click is all it takes for the unit to automatically make the most of its movement and positioning.

  • Precise orders, for more complete strategic command, where you dictate precisely to your unit what actions to perform.

You can use both modes at any time during combat.

Whether you're a beginner or an expert, the path to glory is within your reach.

Closed Beta Summary & Updated Roadmap

Thank You for ParticipatingThe closed beta is now officially over. I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who took the time to test Avant-Garde: Napoleonic Battles and share their comments, feedback, and any bugs they found, with me.The main goal of the closed beta was to gather your feedback to ensure I create the best possible game for all of us. In doing so, you’ve been a huge help, and I’m truly grateful.A big thank you also to all the influencers who featured my game in their videos or livestreams, without you it would be impossible to get the word out about my game to the rest of the world. Thank you!Join the Old GuardSince I’ll be deactivating all the keys distributed during the closed beta shortly, it’s time for me to ask you:Do you want to be part of the Old Guard? In addition to keeping your key active so you can continue testing the game’s progress with each update, your name (and/or username) will be listed in the game’s credits. For more information on the benefits of the Old Guard, head over to my Discord server!Lessons Learned and ConclusionsMany of you have shared your feedback with me, whether by email, on Discord, or via private message. I can tell you that I’m already rolling up my sleeves to implement the changes you’ve mentioned. Of course, I won’t be able to implement all of them, since I have a specific vision for the game and its design that I don’t want to stray from, but, honestly, the game will be better for it!Broadly speaking, here are some important, though by no means exhaustive, changes that will be made:Camera movementsUnit tooltipsClarity of information (UI, stats, tooltips, etc.)The ability to adjust settings (volume, display, resolution, etc.)Making the game available in other languagesProviding a foolproof and more comprehensive tutorialImproved unit visuals & behaviorsAnd much more…The goal has never been clearer than it is now: to have the game as polished and complete as possible for the demo, which will be available on Ste...

    Closed Beta Coming Soon!

The Closed Beta will be available in a few days, July 31st, on Steam! Let me share the current state of the game for this major development milestone.Game ContentSome of you may have already played Avant-Garde: Napoleonic Battles, whether during playtests, conventions, or on Steam (Alpha). So, what’s new in a nutshell?Music & SFX: Adds immersion and emphasizes what’s happening on screen.Tutorial: Continuously refined to help you get a better grip on the game’s controls.Improved Animations: For certain units like sappers and infantry.Better Textures: For terrain and enemy units.Revamped Main Menu: Redesigned with animations and credits.Preparation Scene: Lets you preview the battle and learn more about its historical context.Known IssuesUnfortunately, some features (sometimes critical) are either missing or not perfected. I plan to address these in upcoming updates, of course!Music & SFX: Recently added, but some are still missing or not fully polished.Tutorial: I’ve refined it through multiple tests, but it could still be clearer and better structured.Historical Aspects: Apart from the terrain and a few unit uniforms, no historical elements are implemented yet. This will be included in the game’s Demo.Pathfinding: Units don’t always take the optimal path to their destination.AI is Too Dumb: The artificial intelligence is still too simple and naive.Missing Units: Skirmishers (voltigeurs and chasseurs, among others) are not yet in this version.Game Settings: You currently cannot adjust settings like volume or graphics.Optimization: The game isn’t fully optimized yet, which may result in longer load times for some of you. This list isn’t exhaustive, there’s still plenty of work to do, and I’m well aware of it. With your feedback, you’ll help me make the game better and more stable.Access to the Private BetaI plan to grant access to the private beta on a first-come, first-served basis. Depending on demand and feedback, access may expand to a larger group later if needed....
