Born In Reverie Devlog - 8/4/2026

Howdy folks! BIR is long overdue for a development update, so here it is. I could write paragraphs upon paragraphs detailing exactly what I've been working on the past several months. BIR continues to surprise me with just how herculean of a task this is to work on solo with the support of some freelancers. So with that in mind, I'll keep it succinct and highlight some of the biggest tasks currently in progress and planned for later this year. Act 1 is the focus of development for the foreseeable future, and it's about 40% complete if I had to put a number on it today. The tasks completed have been numerous! Including but not limited to:Script rewrites and additionsMap updates / reworksSprite designsOST additionsProgression QA and testingDocumentationIllustrationsGameplay additionsOne of the biggest areas of focus this year has been illustration work. For major scenes and various lore implications, I have several planned flashback sequences. I've worked with the incredibly talented Solry to produce these illustrations and I'm stoked with how damn well they're turning out so far. I'm hesitant to share tooooo many of these illustrations for spoiler reasons, but here's one of the less "spoilery" ones ;)This flashback sequences shows a young Jamie grasping at her injured eye (you're telling me she doesn't wear the eyepatch purely for fashion!?). With another artist, Jorge Jez we also completed a few different battle backgrounds:This particular background image is used in Dani's dreams, and the battles that take place there. This illustration is a huuuuuge improvement over my old background which used some slightly modified default assets:This old image thematically didn't really fit the design of Dani's dreams in the first place and was essentially a placeholder until I finally got around to creating a proper background. And it's at long last complete! That's it for this update! One of the primary focuses for the remainder of the year is locking more scenes and events i...

    Updates & New Demo

TLDR The new demo and newsletter are on my website! The Details This past month has been very unique for Born In Reverie's development... Because almost no progress was made on the game itself! Certainly some forward momentum occurred, mostly on more bite sized tasks like bug fixes, performance tweaks, and NPC dialogue. Ohhhhhh the never ending NPC dialogue that I have sucked myself into (which in all seriousness, I love writing.) But the majority of my time was spent preparing for a local exposition called Sac Gamers Expo. This involved glorious tasks like updating my website and Steam page, remaking a ton of old marketing assets that could use some serious massaging, and most importantly, making a new demo build to showcase at the exposition. Oh, and remaking the announcement trailer since the UI was completely overhauled recently and the old trailer's footage did not reflect the beautiful new UI elements (I cannot express how much more I love the new UI direction, it is utterly sublime. Check out the gorgeous updated trailer below.) Indeed most of my time recently has been spent making sure all my marketing related bases were covered, and I'm finally relieved to say, I think they are for now. As part of this, I had the idea to release this new demo to the wider public as well. This time the demo is available on my website after you subscribe to the newsletter. Evidently this tactic is called a "lead magnet" in the marketing world, giving you a little incentive to opt into my marketing campaigns ;) My goal with any upcoming email marketing I produce is simple: it should be a little gift to you. I want to bring back the teeniest little bit of that Nintendo Power energy, with guides, character details, quirks and bugs, secrets, etc. It should be interesting and entertaining, because... of course it should be. It's marketing material for a video game and I don't wanna take it too seriously. So if that sounds up your alley, then I encourage you to check out the websit...

    Demo Now Available!

{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44642364/bc785bc775c237cd2f09e8a99cd785901c0d048e.png The demo for Born In Reverie is available! Head to my website to try it for yourself! The demo is playable until the end of the prologue, and will take between 2 and 4 hours. The game runs natively at 1920x1080 resolution and as such will work best on 16:9 displays of equal or higher resolution. A controller is recommended for rumble features, but mouse and keyboard will work too. Play on Steam Deck! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44642364/897f0c6fa835cb4f4bdbf99cc6fa8a6979cab18b.png Born In Reverie is fully compatible with the Steam Deck. If you experience a compatibility error upon launching the demo (or the game crashes on launch) make sure to force the use of a Proton compatibility tool under the game's Properties menu. Any will do, but I recommend the most recently released version. Other than that, I don't anticipate any issues playing the game on the Deck. Cloud saves will be shared between PC and the Deck as well.
