If you playedDark Ride: The Feline Fix, thank you for being one of the first people to step into our little world. The Feline Fix was our first experiment withDark Ride— our attempt to see what a theme park attraction could feel like if it was built from the beginning for VR. We started small: one magical potion shop, a village mysteriously turned into cats, drawers and jars to search through, ingredients to find, and plenty of little surprises hidden around you. It was cozy, curious, a little strange, and very much the beginning of something bigger. Now we’re building that bigger thing. Dark Ride is our new VR theme park — and this time, we’re building the whole park. A place you can wander through, explore at your own pace, discover different attractions, interact with the world, find hidden clues, uncover stories, and slowly learn more about Harland and everything going on behind the scenes. The ideas we started testing with The Feline Fix are growing into the experience we originally imagined. So if you enjoyed searching through the potion shop, making a cure, meeting a ridiculous number of cats, or simply spending some time inside our strange little world, we’d love for you to come see where we’re taking it next. ✨Come visit Dark Ride on Steam and add it to your Wishlist:Read full article on Community Announcements (victoria)AnnouncementsOfficial
The Real Deal (Mostly)
For a long time now we have been working towards this day. To actually put you nice people into a weird little car and drive you down a weird little path we made for it. A dark ride! Welcome to Dark Ride: Sweet Dreams our new FREE VR adventure.Because we were so unsure of everything, this is not the only ride we have made. This is more like one of three, and several non-ride based experiences. And three lands with a dozen stores each. And oh yeah, a couple more experiences I just remembered. Oh yeah and a garden. And some secret tunnels. And a couple warehouses. Back to this ride though. It was the first. Just a little jaunt around a birthday themed story that takes you on a journey that probably won’t make sense to you. I personally hope it will not make sense to you. The rest of the team might feel differently. But, I do think that it might make sense after a ride or two. What I hope is... that it doesn’t make you sick. Motion sickness is a real thing in this sort of experience. And I hope that you don’t see it all the first time, and you want to go again. And I hope you see all the possibilities in it we do. We’re very excited for you to ride this funny little car around this funny little loop. Tell us what you think! And enjoy it.Read full article on Community Announcements (victoria)AnnouncementsOfficial
An Experiment. A Good Old Fashioned Experiment!
https://clan.fastly.steamstatic.com/images/46005858/d425dd498bc36ec18230d5eb06c66cb2d23e0eb8.png Soon we will be releasing a new game in Early Access. It’s a subset of a chunk of a piece that fits into the master plan. But it’s a very very critical piece. It’s a legitimate VR dark ride. What is a “dark ride?” I hear you say. Good question Chappy. Can I call you Chappy? It sounds good to me and you just don’t have much say in the matter so. Here we go Chappy. Chappy. A dark ride is a classic Disney concept where the original concept was to let people “ride the movies” - a tagline later stolen by a competitor. People would continually go to California and drive by the Disney studios and they wanted to see Mickey and Snow White. Did they know that these were cartoons? I think so. But it was the 50’s, so who knows what they thought was inside of the magic picture box. But at a minimum they thought they would see a cool statue or get to go on a tour or shake Walt’s hand. So Walt had this idea to make an amusement park. Which people thought was insane. His wife in particular. Because the closest analogy people could think of for this was mostly carnivals. Dirty, full of scams and shifty shifty carnies. But Walt was going to do it differently. He was going to make a park that was clean and safe for the family. And as someone who was used to going behind the scenes on movies. He had an idea to borrow from the carnival “Love tunnels” (wink wink nod nod -am I right Chappy?) and instead of it being a dark ride for teens to attempt unspeakable mouth on mouth activities. These _dark rides_ would be family friendly. A quick little train ride through a backstage experience where you can pretend to be one of the stars of your favorite movies and wave to all your friends as you go by. And a couple of them would shakily wave back. It’s a charming and wonderful thing. If you have ridden these little... things. Trapped in their time from decades ago. The technology and the naivety froz...Read full article on Community Announcements (victoria)AnnouncementsOfficial
When is Easter?!
Please skip 3-4 paragraphs. This top part is self indulgent nonsense.I’ll get to the article in a minute. But now I’m thinking about eggs Remember the phases of eggs? Like you only liked them scrambled probably. Then you got older and you felt really sophisticated to order them some other way like sunny side up or over easy or JUEVOS rrrrancheros. And sometimes you just had to pretend like. Yes. Of course. I have them all the time like this... Lies. And then maybe a waitress asked you “do you want the edges crispy?” And you thought. “Why yes. Fine lady, I DO like those delicious lacy brown edges.”And then you learned to make them at home. And you F’d it up but they still tasted ok? I mean granted you struggled with that little slick snotty sack around the yolk🍳, But you learned to deal with it any number of ways. (Just poke that thing. Gently. But pop it.)And then one time you saw Jose Andres make those cloud eggs and you thoroughly “oiled” a portion of your kitchen, No? Just me? Ok. Anyway. Eggs.🪺 Welcome to the article those of you who have more valuable things to do with your time. You missed a comparative reminiscence about growing up and forming opinions as told through the lens of a protein rich ovum. When we started building these VR games it was all about the Easter eggs. Honestly. The game was just a way to get to the lore. The story! Because in a VR game you are inside of that mofo. You can read the document from the file cabinet or poke the buttons. You can rotate the book case. You can, well. You can do all that stuff. Not as you watch a proxy play an animation of opening a drawer. It’s rad. It’s you.And even better. Theme parks. What is better than getting to explore a theme park with nobody to tell you not to do stuff. No lines. Lore about the rides. The park. The people who built the park. But making games is wierd!(yeah, I know. On purpose) You may be a casual game player, —but if you are reading a random ass article in a niche game sector on a MORE T...Read full article on Community Announcements (victoria)AnnouncementsOfficial
Hard Hats and Party Hats
We’re closing out the year at Paleozoic with a few wins under our belt. To name a few:* We went to the **Unity conference in Barcelona** and ate tapas and froze on the beach. * We brought on a new developer* We brought on a full time composer (what?)* We released our **first mini-game** on the **Meta Store** for **Quest 3**. * Managed to port the same game over to Oculus.* Managed again! To port the same game over for **Steam** on various headsets. Many of them work as intended! *(Sarcasm, there are a LOT of headsets)** Built a good chunk of new programming and design for our next release. And the next. * All the while we kept working on the main BIG game “Dark Ride” that brings all the mini games and the whole back story together. This week we have been building a little 1 week sprint that *(I the writer of this post have been trying to get people to call “Friday We Ride!” But nobody will do it but me)* is based on the Ancient Greek stories of the various oracles and what would it be like to stumble into one Goonies style. It’s going really great and the team is learning a lot of new ways to work together... fastly. (Don’t @ me, that should work.)But if you are reading this. And tbh, you are not, because we can see the metrics. But if you are then you are *here* to *hear* what we are doing next year! 2026 is gonna be a good one. Maybe. Seems like it anyway. I mean we are on this _other_ timeline in the world right now so anything could happen, but let’s ignore that. It’s Christmas. As mentioned above. By me. We ALREADY have the next couple launches nearly ready. What does that mean in game production terms? Usually almost ready can mean anything from “next week” to... Infinity++. But honestly we are close. As a company who has now **shipped** ahem. We know a thing or two about this sort of thing. And we’re tightening screws and the hard parts are done. Except the *really* hard parts that we have been skipping till now. Like really nice menus and loaders and stuff. ...Read full article on Community Announcements (victoria)
