One of you builds. One of you destroys. One of you caused this. Together, you might just survive. A fun cooperative puzzle platformer.
Action, Indie · More free games
Block_Up challenges you to build and destroy in this cooperative puzzle platformer. Together, your actions determine survival as you navigate through levels designed for teamwork and strategy.
About this game
The world is ending. The lava is rising. One of you probably started it.
Block_Up is an asymmetric co-op puzzle platformer for two players. One of you can place blocks. The other can place them. Neither of you can do it alone - and the lava below doesn't care whose fault it is.
Work together to climb each level before the rising lava catches up. It sounds simple. It plays like the best argument you've ever had.
Two roles. One team. Zero excuses.
The Placer: You place blocks to create paths and platforms. You cannot break anything.
The Breaker: You clear the way by breaking blocks. You cannot place anything.
Oh, and the lava? It just keeps rising. So do you.
30 levels. Infinite arguments.
Climb through 30 handcrafted levels with a steadily rising challenge curve - from your first "oh, I see!" to your fourteenth "no, no, put it THERE." Then keep going with community-made levels in the built-in level editor.
Oh, and collect hats. Lots of hats.
Play anywhere, with anyone.
Couch co-op for when you're in the same room. Full online co-op for when you're not - with a free friend pass so only one of you needs to own the game.

Dev_Update!
Hi everyone! Quick update for you!Squishy Blocklets? We've been experimenting with some new tech that gives us way more freedom in Blocklet animations. Behold! They're so squishy! And they can be way more expressive now too!On the other hand, they look quite different now - and we're not 100% on the new visuals. We'd really like your feedback here! Do you like them? Do you prefer the old ones? Do you think the new ones would feel chewy, and what would they taste like? And what have we been up to?Our time recently has been spent applying for federal funding (which is a lot of paperwork). If we get accepted, we'd be able to spend a lot more time actually finishing the game, so here's hoping! And, as always, work on the game itself continues to be slow but steady.Dokomi! We'll be at Dokomi this weekend! You'll be able to find us at the Creative Games corner - come and say hi if you're around! Also, we're handing out little Blocklets - come get them while stocks last! (may or may not include a soul, I recommend taking care of them either way)Read full article on Community Announcements (bloqheadgames)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev_Update!
Hey everyone! New Dev_Update coming your way!Magma Blocks are Reworked! We never quite liked how magma blocks caused an instant Game Over, exploding at the slightest touch. They were needlessly punishing and frustrating to play with, and because of that it was difficult to make fun levels with them. So we used the opportunity of the re-write to re-work!(bear in mind, the Blocklets are still placeholdering!)Magma blocks are still scorching hot, and the Blocklets really don't like touching them - but at least they don't explode in your face anymore! From Hot to ColdThe ice block is our newest addition to our roster. Within its freeze zone, all special traits of other blocks are turned off: sand stops falling, bouncers stop being bouncy, teleporters deactivate...Oh and - by popular demand - frozen blocks are now slippery! You're welcome!Alright, that's all from me for now, but we've still got a little something for you from our level designer - a little behind the scenes of how our levels change over time!Level Design and the Power of PeopleSo as the level designer of your own game, you'd think you'd know everything, right? That's the attitude we had at our first conventions. You guys picked up the game incredibly fast - some of you even delved into speed running our levels! And that's where the magic happens. Standing next to the players, watching and silently thinking: "Nah, you have to go left. That won´t work.. that.. wait what?!" And boom, there goes your brilliant puzzle. You can't beat the swarm intelligence of all possible players, so we learned to embrace it! Don't restrict them: If players are smarter than you, give them a nice bonus hat and celebrate together! In many cases, we did just that! Players found ways to reach new, unexpected places and we realized we could add a bonus star right there. Sometimes, we learnt of entirely new traversal techniques through play-testing at events. It's all part of the fascinating journey of making a game with your audience, an...Read full article on Community Announcements (bloqheadgames)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev_Update!
Hey everyone!Coming out of the developer cave for a bit to give you guys an update on where we're at. So... Online Multiplayer is surprisingly difficult to do!Those of you who've followed us for a while know that online multiplayer is the main thing missing for us to do a full release - we want you to be able to play Block_Up with your friends regardless of whether they're sitting with you on the couch or if they're on the other side of the world!Block_Up started as a game jam project, and the original code ran on the programming equivalent of duct-tape and hope. As we continued development on it, it grew organically into a chaotic - but functional! - mess. Think of a charming, blocky little robot with terrible cable management, where the leg joints are for some reason connected to the eye sensors - that was Block_Up. Changing anything came at a pretty big risk of things breaking - I distinctly remember one day, trying to change jumping mechanics and it destroyed the UI for no discernable reason. That's not something that should happen. The amount of changes needed to add online multiplayer would've broken everything. Easier to just throw the old code out and start from scratch. So we did!So where are we at now?The game mechanics themselves, as well as most of the visuals, are almost fully ported over! And the rewrite even allowed us to update a couple things to make them smoother! Here's pic taken from our current version:The Blocklets currently have placeholder visuals and are waiting for their fancy new animations. Portals have a snazzy new look, and the ice block is looking pretty cool! Any ideas on what exactly its mechanics are? We've still got a long way to go - UI, control rebinding, lobbies... all the vital things which will ideally be practically unnoticable in the final game. This is taking too long, I want to play the game now!We get ya - we want you to play the game too! We've set the original game as the Demo with a selection of levels. Feel free to show yo...Read full article on Community Announcements (bloqheadgames)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev_Update!
Hey everyone! We've been a bit quiet the past few months, but that's 'cause we've been cooking! Let's catch you up to speed. What's changed? This (Bl)Oc(k)tober will be the 2 year anniversary of the GameJam in which Block_Up was born. A lot of things have changed since then. Look at that glowup! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44540361/cb7ad50abb8c86e5ff8232314309229b895bce13.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44540361/e152f2449a01ca772e06af0a49a882a86e755249.png Apart from the visual update, we've also added a bunch more block types for you to break and place as you please, controller support for most things, tons of small QoL changes, as well as a fancy level editor! We look forward to seeing all the blocktastic levels you come up with. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44540361/b24e1630beac4b9725893b4b1fa9a2114aff8dd6.png Why's the blocking game not released yet?! Whilst the core game itself is basically done, a lot of the stuff around the game isn't yet - the biggest and most important being online multiplayer. But trust us when we say the game will be out as soon as it's ready - we want you to be able to play it too! You mentioned Blocktober? Oh yeah! To celebrate, we'll be holding a small event on our Discord in October. Don't forget to join it to stay updated - be there and be square! There may even be free keys to be won... Until then, we'll return to our blocky game-making cave. Until next time! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44540361/234679a7d2342777d396c347f80fd95f298a568b.pngRead full article on Community Announcements (bloqheadgames)
