🌀Masks of the Void:Origins | Making Of #3: Who is Iret?
Hi, Gamers! RolldBox Games development team Today with Ferran, one of our Co-Founders, as well as the Game Designer and Creative Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋 We are continuing our 'Making Of' video series, where we give you a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Masks of the Void: Origins! 🌀 CHAPTER 3 | #Iret (I) 🌀 #MasksOfTheVoidIn this third chapter, we focus on the character of Iret. But not just the Iret who has received the mask and the power of telekinesis—we are also looking at the untransformed Iret, the lab assistant. In the lore of Masks of the Void: Origins, Iret works alongside her adoptive father, Dr. Herdesett, in the Boreal Island laboratory. She is perfectly happy staying in the shadows, always willing to help and do her part to save the world. She believes heavily in the power of "others," but not so much in her own. Do you get that impression when you first meet her? She is a bit of a lab rat who enjoys things like a good game of chess.Everything changes the moment she puts on the mask. We wanted to inject a massive amount of personality into her transformed state through her character design. We gave her a suit with long, flowing tails to help clearly telegraph her movement direction, her dashes, her object throws, and her reactions from a 2.5D camera perspective. We also made sure you can instantly identify which mask she is currently wearing (and its specific telekinetic power) by the color palette of her suit. It is a full composition of shapes, colors, and movements designed to channel all that power directly into her hands—and into yours! If you haven't jumped in yet, try it out! Feel the rush of telekinesis and the chaos of hurling everything in your environment to survive this frantic world threatened by the Neverending Night. We will be sharing more "Making Of" chapters soon!Don’t forget to join our Discord server. 🌀Masks of the Void:Origins | Making Of #2: Shaping the story and the game
🌀 CHAPTER 2 | #Design (II) 🌀 #MasksOfTheVoid In this second episode, we show a bit of the connection process between the narrative, the underlying story, how we express it through concept art and the creation of the different game areas, and above all, defining the game's architecture. As Ferran shows us in the video, we also use physical notebooks—filled with diagrams, the story, the levels, the procedural rooms, the different areas and what they contain. We map out what we envision happening at every step, the degree of freedom we give the player, and most importantly, how to build it all so that every player experiences each run as something unique and distinct, allowing them to unleash their own creativity. It's all about enjoying the game while balancing the difficulty to keep it challenging.Have you dared to wield the power of the mask? Have you tried the "Mask of Light" yet? Have you built your Minions? If you haven't taken the plunge yet, give it a try!We will be sharing more "Making Of" chapters soon!Don’t forget to join our Discord server. 🌀Masks of the Void:Origins | Making Of #1: From Idea to Reality
Hi, Gamers! RolldBox Games development team Today with Ferran, one of our Co-Founders, as well as the Game Designer and Creative Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋 We are kicking off this "Making Of" video series, where we show you everything behind the creation of Masks of the Void:Origins🌀In this first chapter, we dive deep into Game Design, taking you from our initial ideas— using grey boxes and very simple characters—all the way to the prototypes, development, and final version.CHAPTER 01 | Game Design I 🌀 #MasksOfTheVoid:Origins The brainstorming phase? A high-stress moment where we decided to go all-in on the mechanic of moving and throwing everything around us. And we mean everything! This made us realize that the concept of telekinesis—moving everything with your mind—could translate into a super interesting gameplay experience, and our early playtests proved us right! In fact, our initial players dubbed it an “Anti-stress” game. So, once everything was validated, and combined with the concept of wielding power that we also wanted to explore, all the ingredients came together to design MOV: Origins. Pure roguelite action, with a special power waiting to be discovered. Have you dared to use the mask's power? And that’s not all! You also get to let your creativity run wild with everything you can do using the masks and their abilities. If you haven't taken the plunge yet, give it a try!We will be sharing more "Making Of" chapters soon!Don’t forget to join our Discord server. Devlog #27: The Telekinesis in your hands! – June 3rd, 2026
Hi, Gamers! RolldBox Games development team Today with Ferran, one of our Co-Founders, as well as the Game Designer and Creative Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋 Did you know the core concept for Masks of the Void actually started with telekinesis?Flinging objects with your mind was a huge challenge, and we had to ask ourselves: do we dare mess with the physics engine and everything else it takes to let players grab and throw literally anything around them in-game?The answer is pretty obvious! We jumped straight into prototyping and playing around with the telekinesis mechanics. If you want a behind-the-scenes look, feel free to check out the Making Of videos over on our YouTube channel!Inside the Development Process So, how did all that prototyping for the Telekinesis mechanics actually translate into gameplay? Well, we decided to take a handful of the ideas we brainstormed (and trust us, there were a lot of them!) and tie them directly to the Mask you have equipped.Every mask lets you wield that power in a completely different way, giving you the freedom to decide exactly where and when to use them as you progress through the game. Here is a breakdown of how we mapped the Telekinesis abilities to each mask:🔹 Sand Mask:With the special skill you can levitate all surrounding objects and after 1 sec or more, launch them towards your target. These objects may break when hit creating lots of debris.🔹 Blood MaskAll surrounding objects start orbiting around you while you are capable of moving. These objects do not break until the ability ends. The objects orbit at a fast pace around the player. Despite that, the base movement speed is reduced while the ability is active by half. 🔹 Light MaskGet all surrounding objects and stack them together to create a minion that will protect you. When activating the skill, you will be able to choose from 4 different types of minions based on how long you hold the skill! Beware, each one has its own strengths and weaknesses… Sn...Read full article on Community Announcements (ROLLDBOX GAMES)
