Embark on Zak's wild journey through alien worlds as you master the Laser Katana and face off against nefarious foes. Dive into an action-packed adventure where strategy meets swordplay.

About this game

An Epic Journey... Full of Lasers, Explosions, and Ridiculously Good Fun!

Our young hero Zak – who’s certainly not your average farm boy – embarks on a quest to find the Ancient Orbs! These aren’t your average orbs, mind you. No, no – these are REALLY old, REALLY mighty alien gadgets scattered across the five known planets of the galaxy! They’re not just sitting there like some sort of galactic decoration. They’re packed with unimaginable power and the unnecessary complication of making Zak’s life way more difficult than it needs to be.

TALES OF THE LASER KNIGHTS

An Action-Adventure, Comic Sci-Fi B-Movie... with a Seriously Cool Laser Katana!

  • Controls? Twin-stick shooter style – you attack, you move, you dodge. It's so simple, it practically teaches itself!

  • Classic top-down action: explore, solve puzzles, and hit stuff with your Laser Katana that probably shouldn’t be hit with a Laser Katana (but hey, it’s your universe!).

  • Soundtrack: Composed by Olivér Kovács, bringing you tunes inspired by 80s/90s cartoons and anime. Get ready to feel nostalgic in the most nonsensical way possible.

LASERS! EXPLOSIONS! ACTION!

It's a galaxy-spanning, laser-fueled extravaganza. And did we mention explosions? Because there are lots of those. Like, a lot.

Upgrade Your Laser Katana!

Imagine if a Swiss Army knife had a laser sword… and a few extra booms thrown in. Extend your personal Laser Katana with more features than your last tech gadget that had a “Game-Changing Update.”

  • Power it up with Light and Heavy Attacks – because why settle for one when you can have both?

  • Learn the powerful Shield Stomp© – take that, gravity! Or turn it into a Laser Whiplash (don’t ask how that works, we don’t even know).

  • Swing over ravines with the super-useful Laser Grapplehook (I have absolutely no idea how that could possibly work?! Lasers and grappling???)

Across the Universe!

Explore all five planets in the galaxy, each with its own quirky environment, its own strange flora, and oh yes – fauna that mostly just wants you to, you know, not exist anymore. You’ll need all the lasers, explosives, and questionable decisions you can muster! But hey, don’t worry about it – lasers! Explosions! Action!

The Plot

Zak lives on a boring desert farm. He’s seen one sand dune, and frankly, he’s had enough. Enter Ramius, an ancient warrior who casually mentions that Zak’s whole life is about to get a little more interesting. Turns out, there’s an ancient alien race called The Ancient, who built the Ancient Orbs. These orbs were supposed to unite the planets, but now they’re all gone like a bad sequel to a classic movie.

Zak’s family had one of these Orbs, and just when Zak thought life couldn’t get worse, it’s stolen by a bunch of weird, faceless soldiers. Zak grabs Ramius' ancient energy weapon, and with nothing but a sword, a dream, and a serious case of teenage angst, he sets off on a galaxy-spanning journey to retrieve these mystical spheres and maybe fix the galaxy along the way.

Along his adventures, Zak finds blueprints for more Ancient technology, making his weapon unbelievably powerful. Only with these upgrades will Zak survive the increasingly absurd challenges ahead. And what’s his end goal? To find and defeat the evil villainous forces who stole the Orbs in the first place – because, naturally, there has to be a villain. It's the law of the galaxy.

Summary in a Nutshell

Zak’s just trying to make it as a farm boy. Then bam! Ancient Orbs, lasers, explosions, and lots of very bad guys. Now he’s the galaxy’s last hope. Not bad for a guy who used to milk space cows.

Get ready to wield your Laser Katana, solve the universe’s problems, and try not to blow up too many things (although, let’s be honest, you probably will).

Demo Update 0.8.0 – Rocks. Lots of Rocks.

Demo Version 0.8.0 is out! This update is mostly about giving the desert planet a bit more life and variety. I’ve been adding lots of small environmental details — with a somewhat unreasonable focus on rocks. 🪨The world should now feel less empty and a bit more like an actual dusty, lived-in desert planet.Changelogadded purple cactuses ... cacti ... plants?!?added lots of little rock pilesadded windmill and watertankadded more pipes to doors (especially trader jane's)adjusted dust particles to be more visibleadjusted all rock textures to have more details (per noise variation)increased player acceleration (smoother movement)moved some mushrooms in first dungeon (player could get stuck)smoother player head rotation while near enemy or NPCoptimization: less unit calculations if units (enemies) are off-screenincreased holo sign glowsmemory leak: loading different songs wouldn't unload last song (could remain in memory)fixed normal blending on ground materials (smoother ground display)fixed E.V.I.L. soldiers being stuck in ground and not being animated - but moving around like normal :)fixed player spot light not moving during cutscenes or loading screensMore little details are coming as development continues!Tales of the Laser Knights – Demo 0.8.0 is out now.

Update 0.7.9: Dungeon Overhaul, Snappier Combat & World Polish!

Hello, adventurers!I'm back with another packed update designed to make your journey deeper, more responsive, and visually striking. In this patch, I've focused heavily on your feedback regarding early-game exploration, combat responsiveness, and atmospheric immersion across the major zones. Being a solo developer means every bit of your feedback helps me shape the game directly, and I'm excited to show you what I've been working on!Here is a detailed breakdown of what’s changing today:🗺️ Exploration & World OverhaulsThe First Dungeon Overhaul: I felt the introductory dungeon was guiding you a bit too much by the hand. To bring back that classic sense of discovery, the central obelisk is now completely hidden from plain view. You will need to rely on your wits, explore the area, and actively find your way forward.High-Visibility Chestboxes: No more missing out on rewards hidden in the shadows! I’ve implemented a brand-new chestbox model finished in a high-visibility yellow coat. They stand out perfectly against the dark environment, ensuring your exploration is always properly rewarded.Atmospheric Enhancements (Rusthaven/Junkyard & Zak’s Farm): I've been spending a lot of time injecting more life and grit into the game world:Rusthaven / The Junkyard: Now features a massive injection of light sources, gorgeous buzzing neon signs, and intricate environmental details that solidify its dystopian, scrap-hewn identity.Zak’s Farm: Received a heavy structural pass. I’ve added lots of new lights, a brand-new well, and an intricate network of pipes snaking through the property to elevate its industrial-agrarian atmosphere.Water Physics Polish: I noticed that throwing heavy objects into water didn't feel quite right—they would sink with standard, uniform gravity, which looked pretty unnatural. I've tweaked the physics so that heavy items now sink slowly through water, giving them a much better sense of weight and resistance.🧠 Smarter Enemies & Deadlier BossesNew Stealth & Aggr...

Demo v0.7.8: Seeing Red, Clean Tech, & Pure Combat Flow

Hey space travelers! 🪐It’s time for another update as we march closer to polishing up our core demo experience. Version 0.7.8 focuses heavily on environmental storytelling, UI cleanup, and trimming the fat from our combat visual effects so every swing of your sword feels just right. Here is the breakdown of what’s new in the latest build! 🎨 Visuals & Environment: The Red InvasionThe first planet is looking a whole lot more alien today. We wanted to dial up the sci-fi atmosphere and give the starting world a more distinct, vibrant identity.Red Moss Takeover: You’ll notice patches of a strange, thick red moss sprawling across the terrain of Planet 1. It isn't bioluminescent, but its deep, striking crimson tone gives the landscape a beautifully eerie, otherworldly vibe.Next-Gen Industrial Polish: Our spaceship, elevators, and various machinery have received a massive texture overhaul. We’ve stripped away some of the muddy noise in favor of cleaner, sleeker, high-contrast cartoon textures that fit our overall art style perfectly.⚔️ Combat & QOL: Smoother SlashingWe love visual juice, but sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. We noticed that cutting through the local wildlife was becoming a bit of a sensory overload.Flora Interactions: Those pesky desert flowers can now be sliced and diced using your Laser Katana!Screen Shake & FX Reductions: Slashing through flora (flowers, bushes, etc.) will no longer trigger camera shake, and we’ve significantly reduced the visual FX stacking. This keeps the combat loop feeling incredibly snappy and responsive without giving you a headache when you're just clearing a path.🖥️ UI Refinement: Clearer UpgradesThe Player Upgrade UI got some much-needed love to make your progression choices feel more impactful and readable.Upgrade Descriptions: Added explicit, clear descriptions for both Health and Stamina upgrades so you know exactly what you're investing in.Layout Adjustments: Tweaked the positioning and alignment of the upgrade...

Devlog 0.7.7b — UI Glow-Up, Better Questing, and Visual Polish

Version 0.7.7b is focused on one thing: making the game feel better moment-to-moment.This update improves a lot of the interfaces players interact with constantly, adds clarity to progression and quests, and pushes the visuals further toward the atmosphere the game has been evolving into lately.Upgrade UI ReworkThe player, powersuit, and katana upgrade screens have all been redesigned.Upgrades are now presented as holographic blueprint-style panels with glowing outlines and cleaner presentation overall. The old UI worked functionally, but the new look makes upgrading feel much more connected to the sci-fi aesthetic of the world. On top of that, upgrades are now performed by holding the upgrade button instead of clicking once. It sounds small, but the interaction feels dramatically more satisfying and gives upgrades a stronger sense of weight and progression. To make onboarding smoother for new players, the player upgrade UI now stays hidden until you actually have Moxies available to spend. Early gameplay should now feel less overwhelming and easier to understand.Health and stamina upgrades also now include proper descriptions so it's clearer what each improvement actually affects.Questlog ImprovementsThe questlog received a major readability pass. Each quest now displays its own icon, making it much easier to scan through objectives quickly. Subquests also now have bordered sections and improved backgrounds to better separate information visually. There’s also a new map indicator system for NPC-related quests. If a quest requires talking to a specific NPC, that NPC will now be marked directly on the map UI. No more wandering around trying to remember who you needed to find.Visual UpgradesA lot of visual polish went into this update as well.Smoke effects that are purely cosmetic are now rendered with a more realistic style, while gameplay-relevant smoke still keeps the puffier, more readable toon-like visuals. This keeps combat readability intact while allowing environm...

Devlog #7: Deep Dive into the Jungle Planet

Development on the third of our five planned planets—the lush, treacherous Jungle Planet—is officially in full swing. This environment has been a blast to build, offering a vibrant contrast to the more desolate landscapes we’ve visited so far. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new in the latest build:Environmental Interaction: Destructible FloraTo make the jungle feel more alive and reactive, I’ve implemented a new system for destructible plants. Beyond just aesthetics, these serve as a playground for players to experiment with their weaponry.Visual Feedback: Plants now sway, break, and disintegrate based on impact types.Utility: Some destructible elements may hide secret paths, resources, or provide tactical cover during combat encounters. It’s a small detail, but it adds a satisfying layer of tactile immersion to the traversal.PowerSuit Evolution: New CollectiblesExploration on the Jungle Planet is more rewarding than ever. I’ve integrated a suite of new items and resource nodes specifically tied to PowerSuit progression.Functional Upgrades: These materials aren't just vendor trash; they are required components for upcoming suit modules.Incentive: The more you scour the dense foliage, the more likely you are to stumble upon rare tech fragments needed for significant stat boosts, encouraging players to deviate from the main path.Aesthetic Overhaul: UI RefreshThe user interface has received a significant polish. The goal was to align the UI's aesthetic with the game’s overall sci-fi tone while improving readability and ease of use.Modernized HUD: We’ve moved toward a cleaner, more minimalist layout that keeps vital information front and center without cluttering the screen.Dynamic Feedback: The updated inventory and upgrade menus are more intuitive, featuring better iconography and smoother transitions, making the management side of your journey feel more seamless.Hostile Inhabitants: Jungle EncountersThe primary focus of this week was finalising the enemy AI and behavio...
