    Wassermann Version 0.4

Hi everybody, it's been some time. Now I am back though with a new update that brings lots of new things to discover for playtesters! The development parts of this updates were not totally easy and I faced more than one roadblock. Nevertheless, I learned lots of things and some new tricks. The most important aspect of this update are probably two new interactive "cutscenes"/story excursions/memories/imaginations/whatever you want to call them. The player will encounter them along their journey. Additionally I added many new assets, for example the new fir trees in the outside area change the look and feel of the outside area pretty drastically. I am now quite confident in the lore/story of the game, and think that it is on a good track. I am still looking into making the game spookier, adding more threats and such. That will definitely be a large topic in future updates. I would also like maybe 1-2 more cutscenes as well as a larger cave area. Some time I will also have to spend on performance optimizations, though the graphics options introduced in this update (for example FSR 2.2) offer at least some improvements already. Have a nice day! :) Full Changelog Features Add church cutscene, including new location, dialogue, etc. Add tavern cutscene, including new location, dialogue, etc. Add fir trees to the world. Add in-game FPS display (press F3 to toggle on/off) Integrate dialogue system Improve savegame system, improved handling of certain checkpoints, especially regarding cutscenes Add physics-based table skittles minigame Add graphics options for V-Sync, MSAA for 3D, MSAA for 2D (UI), Screenspace AA (FXAA), TAA, 3D Scaling rate and modes (including FSR 1.0, and FSR 2.2). Maintenance Update Godot to version 4.2.1 Update Waterways plugin Change physics system to Jolt Bug Fixes and Other Minor Improvements Fix bug where player kept moving while interacting with something when player held that button while starting to interact Fix bug where a new savegame was not wr...

    Wassermann Version 0.3

Hi everyone, I did not get as much done last week as I would have liked to, nevertheless, I added various new things I would like to share with you! First of all: I let my partner play test this version of the game, and they jumped and screamed a few times, so generally I think the development is moving in the right direction and I am very happy about that, as being scary is one of the main goals of this game obviously. Last week I also wrote about implementing some sort of chase/threat situation, unfortunately I didn't get around to do that yet, but I will try to focus next week's effort on that (for real now, I swear). I'll also try again to extend the cave a bit, And lastly, I'd like to add a more eerie feel to some parts of the game. Thanks for reading, and have a nice week! Full Changelog Features Newly added mob can now move Replace the second bridge (two logs with a few planks on top) with an actual bridge model Add a setting to change mouse sensitivity Add new scares Add rope and rope climbing section Extend the cave Add 3 more checkpoints Add drip stones to cave Checkpoints now save if the player has picked up the lantern or not Checkpoints now save whether certain triggers have been activated or not Add sound when falling down large heights Add more crystals to the cave Change crystal material emission mode Add new sound effects Maintenance Implement basic system that makes it easier for me to add new variables regarding objects in the scene to save files. Bug Fixes and other Small Improvements Music changes again (was not working for last build) when entering the cave Fix bug where looking up/down while moving lead to weird camera movements Reduced certain light leaks

    Wassermann Version 0.2

Hi everyone, development efforts have been made and I am very happy on the progress I made over the past few days. A problem I am now facing is that if I were to post all my changes here, it would probably spoil you to at least some degree and might take away some of the more surprising and/or scary parts of the game. That's why I will try to write about e.g. scary or story parts of the game only in very generic terms. The last week's development focused on a lot of things, many new 3D models were added for example. I rewrote the game's entire player detection system (i.e. the system that's responsible for playing a scary sound for example when the player enters a certain area). The camera system got lots of polish. And some of the introduced mechanics include climbing of ladders, fall damage, and a new movement system that slows you down in tight corridors. What I am still trying to figure out is the right pacing for scares and creepy elements. Many scary sounds and creepy objects are great, but I think a certain level of threat (i.e. chances for the player to die) is also necessary, otherwise the player might learn that there is no harm in anything and they become immune to the scary things in the game (look at reviews of Don't Scream for example, while it is a great and good looking game, some players figured out quite fast that as long as they remain silent the game cannot hurt their player character). I had a friend test Wassermann, and while they said the atmosphere is quite creepy, I think a few more actual elements of immediate danger would have enriched their experience. So in the coming days I will try to focus on implementing some actual 'threats' (besides fall damage) so I can see how new testers react to that. Full Changelog Features Picking up the lantern now makes a sound Added several new letters and adjusted existing ones Add basic version of a Checkpoint system Add fog (again) to the outside world You can now choose if you want to continue from you...

    Introduction to Wassermann's Development

Hi everyone, we have a reason to celebrate: You can now officially wishlist Wassermann on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2506070/Wassermann/ What type of game is Wassermann? Wassermann will be a short and eerie adventure game (mostly a walking-sim) with some horror elements. It is set in an Alpine mountain valley and a vast cave system. The main objective in the game will be to attempt to rescue your spouse, who ventured into the cave under mysterious circumstances. The problem is that the cave happens to be the lair of the infamous Wassermann. What or who is 'Wassermann'? 'Wassermann' is German for something like water sprite or water man. It is a common creature in folktales around Europe. In my game it is mainly inspired by Austrian folklore, though I will also take a lot of creative liberties. The Wassermann lives in all kinds of waters and it is said that it is known to abduct people. Planned Development As I have experienced with my previous games, game development takes up a lot of time. Like, really a lot. And everything takes more time than you assume. Additionally, like with everyone's life, there are many things going on simultaneously. I also do university stuff, work at a job, have family/friends/a partner I'd like to spend time with, and chores I need to take care of. In order to still be able to pursue this game's development in a realistic but stress-free manner I decided on a few measures and goals: I aim for a release in the first half of 2024. I aim for a play time of about half an hour. This will hopefully result in a more compact and fun gaming experience, still offers enough value to players, and helps me keeping to scope manageable. I plan to upload new versions to Steam often and regularly, and to post patch notes to the game's Steam news feed. Not many will care about some patch notes from a game that isn't even released, but it just helps me a lot to stay motivated. I will try to work on the most important things first. The next ...
