Dive into Gettysburg, a strategic masterpiece where you command units on a hex grid, recreating historical battles. Developed by the renowned Hexes of War and C3i, this turn-based strategy game offers both solo and online multiplayer modes for history buffs and gamers alike.
About this game
RBM Studio's Gettysburg features gameplay based on the historical wargaming boardgames of the 70's and 80's. Players maneuver markers that represent their units on a hexagonal map that mimics the gameboard and cardboard counters of traditional boardgames. Turns are completed in an "I go, you go" style, wherein players alternate their turns with their opponent until one player passes. Once that happens, a random number of unopposed actions are given to their opponent. Pass too early and you risk giving your opponent the opportunity to maneuver completely around your forces. Combat is resolved through die rolls modified by terrain, battle line factors, and the use of artillery support. Attackers benefit from flanking defenders. Defenders benefit from being in defensible terrain.
Artillery support is a finite resource, so think carefully about when to use it. If both players use artillery in an engagement, an artillery duel is conducted in which at most one player will receive the bonus but both players risk losing additional artillery support if their opponent's cannon manage to hit their own.
The Confederates begin the game with less artillery support but ultimately receive more units and benefit from a greater area of influence generated by General Lee. Only the Union player can deploy a special sharpshooter unit that protects a single hex from the Confederate advance. Careful placement of this unit can help block a Confederate advance farther into the North.
Key Features
- Command your units in an historically accurate representation of the real Battle of Gettysburg.
- Maneuver to try and pin your opponent's forces, while keeping your own free to act.
- Manage your artillery usage to avoid being overrun late in the game if your opponent still has resources left.
- Choose your fights carefully - losing artillery and men attempting to capture a well-defended hex without adequate preparation is a sure path to defeat.
- Solo play as both sides to explore the rules and potential strategies.
- Online multiplayer play against a human opponent.

Designer Mode Update
The game has been out for quite a while (about 2 and a half years!), so I suspect players have gotten used to the default scenario setup. This update adds a "Designer Mode" to the game. To use it, start a solo, "hot seat" game, and using the menu in the upper left select "Designer". You'll see a dialog that includes every unit in the game. You'll be able to place units, change their reinforcement turns, remove units from the map, etc. Players will be able to set up situations to experiment with. Note that the AI is designed for the base game, so it likely won't work well playing against a modified scenario that has significant changes. Once you've setup your scenario, just save the game and reload it later to play it again as many times as you like. You can modify the design after loading it as well. Hopefully, this will give you a chance to try out some situations that you haven't seen in regular game play. I hope you enjoy it!Read full article on Community Announcements (btipton)AnnouncementsOfficial
Progress on Waterloo
I have to admit, Waterloo is much harder than Gettysburg. The rules are quite a bit more involved, and the size of the map is much bigger. Building the AI is probably going to be the biggest challenge - the number of roads on the map makes it much more difficult to look at all the possible moves the AI can make. Having an AI opponent is something we definitely want, though. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44384265/a7d4775f94657537d6fd86eb098b689d39bced7a.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44384265/be8f9dd37fe5801a53dbdd06c2e9574c3cfeb85f.pngRead full article on Community Announcements (hexesofwar)Patch NotesOfficial
Fix for observer mode looping and achievements when in solo play
This update fixes an issue wherein running the game in observer mode would affect later games played in solo mode, causing them to start new games after the game result screen was displayed. This update also fixes a bug in recording achievements that caused them to fail sometimes when in solo mode.Read full article on Community Announcements (btipton)Patch NotesOfficial
Bug fix for HQ placement and moving printed rules into game
This update fixes a user-reported bug when HQ placement cannot be done because there are no spaces within 3 hexes of a friendly unit that are not also in an enemy unit's ZOI. Under the rules, the HQ should be able to be placed within 3 hexes of either entry point 'A' or 'I', depending upon which player is active, and the HQ can be placed in an enemy ZOC without penalty. This update implements this rule correctly. The update also embeds the printed rules within the game so that Steam won't get stuck on "Stopping..." if the user has opened the printed rules and then exited the game. For users who would like to review the printed rules outside of the game, we've made them available in the Community Hub as a Guide.Read full article on Community Announcements (btipton)
