In Once Upon A Tile, strategically place dungeon tiles to navigate your hero towards victory or peril. This indie RPG challenges you to think creatively as you build and outwit the labyrinthine puzzles set by KnotHorn Studio.
About this game
A young wanderer is lost in the forests, and accidentally unleashes something evil. A group of strangers need to become friends and find their own path to salvation to lift the curse that has befallen the land.

Once Upon A Tile has you explore ever-changing dungeons guarded by monsters, traps and magical challenges. Perhaps you need to navigate a trap-filled corridor to the end, or defeat a certain amount of monsters or collect enough treasures to make it through alive. The reasons will change, but the goal remains the same - build the dungeon as you explore it, and avoid traipsing over too many traps or monsters you can not defeat yet. This will require a little bit of luck and a whole lot of strategic planning.
While you play as a hero, you do not move directly. Instead, you follow the shortest paths to the newly discovered dungeon rooms you are exploring. This makes for a very unique and challenging game, where every steps and tile you place counts.
Once Upon A Tile features:
- endless replayability with procedurally generated dungeon-decks
- unlockable and upgradable characters
- an engaging, fully voiced storyline depending on which character you choose to play
- complex mechanics that require you to think carefully, but easy to learn gameplay

Patch 1.02 is live - simplified tutorial and bug fixes!
Hello fair travellers on yonder twisted paths, we have patch 1.02 for you. Apologies it took us a bit longer than expected. - Harlowe's rooms now all have exits. Previously, his second room spawned without any bridges. - You should no longer randomly change characters while reloading or restarting the game. Let us know if you still encounter this issue! - Harlowe's Vanguard Skilltree was upside down. Sorry, you'll only be able to unlock that first skill after levelling him up quite a bit. - The Health tooltip in German was broken. It now works again. - The Continue button was greyed out if you returned to the main menu after solving an act. This no longer happens. - Yara's Act is now considerably shorter and much, much easier - you can still die if you are careless, but you'll find it much easier to unlock Harlowe now. KNOWN ISSUES Sorry everyone, we are still working on getting all achievements ready - the hidden achievements cannot be completed for now. We know, we know, it's painful for fellow completionists like us as well. Bug hunting has reduced our internal roadmap for some quality of life improvements, but we're on them. Thank you so much for your reports and support. Don't forget to write a review if you enjoyed the game, and even if not, to let other potential players see what it's about! Much love and happy puzzling, Manu & Björn from KnotHorn StudioRead full article on Community Announcements (Vexing Vision)AnnouncementsOfficial
Once Upon A Tile version 1.01
Welcome to version 1.01! We apologize to those who got stuck during the launch weekend and could not properly progress the storylines. FIX Fixed wrong act loading after ending with Yara - Yara's End was not, in fact, Yara's End. It is now. The little mouse gets a single Act to teach you all about the game and unlock the first of the heroes upon completion. BALANCE Rebalanced Yara's bossfight - We have removed a few monsters and magical challenges from the final scenario, to make it a bit more easy for beginners. Don't expect the same mercy from any of the other encounters though! FIX Fixed wrong character name on the map - While we love Yara, each of our heroes deserves to be reminded of who they are. Her name will no longer be on the other character's maps. FIX Bossfights were not winnable - An oversight on our part made it impossible to actually win any of the bossfights, just survive them. While that's good enough to continue through the game, the much necessary and well-deserved rewards weren't distributed. They now are. FIX Crash on reaching the final scenario in Act 2 - The boss has been somewhat pacified and will now be accessible and ready to fight. BALANCE - Act 1's wildfire was not really threatening. The area in which you can run around is now much smaller, and much more of a challenge. Good luck! FIX - Players who played the demo were unable to complete ANY achievements. This is now fixed. While we're still going to implement the majority of our achievements in one of the next patches, you'll be able to prove to the world that you managed to die dramatically in the tutorial. Please continue to report if anything doesn't seem quite right, and thank you so much for your patience and your support of our small indie team.Read full article on Community Announcements (Vexing Vision)Patch NotesOfficial
