About this game

Quest Machina is a single-player game that uses generative AI to create a unique adventure on each playthrough. Create your character, add prompts to influence the generation, and explore a world made just for you.

Discover a unique star system

Create your character and visit planets rocked by conflict. Each game has a unique storyline and final boss, which can be influenced by your inputs or created entirely by AI.

Build your deck

Craft a deck to face off against space pirates and hostile creatures in card-based combat. Strategize with Hold effects and Play effects to deal damage while protecting yourself from the next attack.

Load up with gear

Buy, loot, and steal gear to increase your stats and help you overcome challenges across the star system. Align your stats with your deck to power up your cards.

Be a hero or a villain

Save the villager or steal their gear? It's your choice, but prepare for the consequences. Each game has multiple endings; the one you get is selected by the mark you left on the world.

Every world in Quest Machina has a unique ID. Send it to a friend and they can import your world into a save slot.

    Rolling the dice

Welcome back! It felt good to do the initial announcement so I'll keep doing occasional devlogs here to explain a bit more about the game as I develop it. Today, let's talk about dice! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44838605/aa18074019ef2db630c5eb6108b678545f1b0b9e.gif In Quest Machina, many areas you explore will contain actions that require an attribute check to complete. In some cases, you may select that check and retry it later if you fail. In others, the check occurs during a one-time event and the outcome is permanent. The attributes Strength: The raw muscle to move and lift things Dexterity: The finesse to dodge objects and unlock caches Intelligence: The mental capacity to translate and grasp complex ideas Endurance: The fortitude to endure punishing conditions Charisma: The ability to charm and convince other characters Inspired by DnD! While I understand and respect the distinction between Intelligence and Wisdom, I think that can be unclear for some uninitiated players (and also for the AI, which decides what attribute an action will check against). For the action above, the player has chosen "Inspect Caramel Stalactite" (forgive me, this particular world was candy-themed). The AI has decided that will check against the character's intelligence. But how do we decide if it succeeds or fails? The math The math has some small modifiers, but is roughly this: If the checked stat plus a d20 roll is greater than the action's difficulty rating, you succeed. Otherwise, you fail. In Quest Machina, success could mean new equipment, new cards, or access to a new area. Failure can mean damage, a curse, or that action becoming locked temporarily. In determining how hard the difficulty rating should be, we consider: - How deep into the area is this location? Deeper locations have harder checks and better loot - Objectively, how hard is this thing to do? We query the AI to see if we're jumping over a log (easy) vs jumping over a gorge (very hard) Re-rolls please? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}...

    Store page approved!

Woke up this morning and found Steam had approved the store page! Before this week, I did not know if Quest Machina would ever be on Steam given the stance on generative AI. I had continued development for the last 6 months unsure of where this game would end up. But the announcement last week gave me hope that I'll be able to share QM with Steam players soon. How soon? Planning to get a demo going using a pre-generated scenario by Q3, hopefully participate in Next Fest in October, and launch v1.0 by end of this year. In the meantime, I'll post feature updates here. Watch this space! Space, like outer space...? I'll see myself out.
