Simplified Chinese Update: Release Date Moved to September 10th!
Hello everyone, BTrain here!Originally, I planned to release the Simplified Chinese update on September 14th, but I have decided to move it up to September 10th. This will give us a few extra days for quality assurance testing before the game goes on sale on the 14th. Additionally, both Grey Heritage titles will be participating in the Steam Party RPG Festival! There will be discounts for both games during the event.I can't wait to hear from our Chinese audience! If you enjoy the game and want to see the series continue, please make sure to leave a Steam review so I can gauge the demand. I truly want to continue providing support for our Chinese players, but as a solo developer, keeping up with localization can be challenging.Until next time!Read full article on Community Announcements (btrainstudio)AnnouncementsOfficial
The Story Behind Noble Duty's Localization (New Devlog!)
Hey everyone, BTrain here!If you caught our previous updates, you already know that we have a Simplified Chinese build of Grey Heritage: Noble Duty in the works. Today, I want to give you a more in-depth look at the challenges behind making this happen and what it means for the future of the studio.Ever since launching Noble Duty in English, it’s been weighing on me that our Asian audience couldn't continue the story. As a developer who grew up playing fan-translated JRPGs, I know exactly how much it stings when a language barrier gets in the way of playing a great game.Taking the leap to fund this localization was a big step, but it is something I truly wanted to do. We are planning to officially launch this update to coincide with the game's first anniversary during the upcoming Steam Party-Based RPG Fest. You can check out some early screenshots and hear the full story of the localization process in our newest devlog:What about Counter Gambit? Bringing this localization to life creates a new question for our upcoming finale, Grey Heritage: Counter Gambit. Should we run a pre-order Kickstarter to fund its localization? To be clear: Counter Gambit is already fully funded and deep in development for our 2027 release, so the game is launching regardless! But a Kickstarter could help us bring the game to more languages—like Japanese or Portuguese—without pulling from our core development budget. We could offer Steam keys for Faded Vision, Noble Duty, and Counter Gambit as part of the campaign. This is completely new territory for VelCrest Games, and I want to ask you directly: Do you care about localizations, and is a campaign something you would want to fund as a backer? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! And if you haven't already, please help us out by wishlisting Counter Gambit!Read full article on Community Announcements (btrainstudio)Patch NotesOfficial
[Counter Gambit Update] Playthrough Expectations And Reaching The Finish Line
Hello everyone!I recently finished a private playthrough of Grey Heritage: Counter Gambit and wanted to talk about some of the things that happened along this journey.Playthrough Time Expectations The game is 13 chapters long instead of my usual 14. I did consider pushing it to 14 chapters, but I felt like it would come off as filler, and I wanted a tighter, more conclusive finish to the trilogy. My own run took 6 hours without any cutscenes. Because I'm the developer and already know the game inside and out, I like to multiply my time by 1.5x to 2x to estimate a first-time playthrough for the audience. This means I expect about 9-12 hours of pure gameplay from your personal playthrough. The script is about 40,000 words long. The average person reads about 1,000 words in 4 minutes, but since this is a video game with transitions and effects, I push this average closer to 5 minutes per 1,000 words. This means I expect players to take about 3-4 hours to experience the narration.(9-12 Gameplay Hours) + (3-4 Narration Hours) = 12-16 Expected Playthrough Hours. So far, I’ve been using this formula and I've noticed it’s roughly accurate based on people’s playthroughs of my previous games. This is a pace I am personally very satisfied with.Prioritizing Game Design Because this game is a sequel and the finale to the trilogy, I didn't have to work as hard on creating the world, assets, or new mechanics from scratch. This time, I was allowed to focus solely on how good the game design feels. Game design and telling stories are the things I’m most passionate about in this industry, and I believe they are my core strengths as a developer. Grey Heritage: Counter Gambit might be my favorite game I’ve worked on so far. When looking back, I like to consider how much I loved working on a game and what might happen once I release it. My personal ranking for Counter Gambit is quite high. I think this features some of the finest level design and pacing I’ve achieved across all my games, a...Read full article on Community Announcements (btrainstudio)AnnouncementsOfficial
