Embark on a perilous journey to climb the mountain and increase your power by recruiting allies in Mossroot. Developed by Fighty Boys Games, this 2024 indie RPG challenges you to fight against tyranny and build your home for greater strength.

About this game

Mossroot is a party-based tactical RPG Roguelike. Climb up a fortified mountain. Fight bandits, knights, cavemen and more. Power up your team, make hard decisions, recruit enemies to help fight against tyranny. Bring them to your Homebase, get to know them and build a safe haven together.

Fight Your Way to the Top

Take down the Evil King! Climb his treacherous mountain, travel through varied dangerous biomes, each with their own cadre of monsters, bandits, and potential allies. Find treasures in each fight: runes that will power up your teammates, and items like bombs and potions you can use to fight your foes. No run is exactly the same, the map up the mountain is procedurally generated.

Make Difficult Decisions

You'll make pitstops on your way up the hill. Some are simply places to catch your breath, but watch out, others will force you to make important decisions. Are you willing to sacrifice on strength to increase another? The choices you make will decide how easy your attempt is.

Recruit Your Enemies

Not everyone you face is a bad guy. Recruit sympathetic souls to your cause by finding what they want and fulfilling it. Each new unit has their own special powers they can use, some synergising with each other, creating different teams to build and new ways to play the game.

Build a Safe Haven Together

Bring your new recruits back to your homebase, a village destroyed by war. Talk to them, learn their life, and rebuild the town together. As you grow in size, you'll find merchants and other services that will help your runs become easier, or even harder, with greater reward.

Features:

  • Over 15 playable characters
  • 4 different biomes, each with a wide variety of enemies
  • a homebase that grows with you
  • Options to make your runs easier or harder

Patch 2: New artifacts, updated demo and autumn Sale!

Hello! It's been a fun experience getting to make this game for you, and as I reach my first sale, I wanted to update Mossroot and give a little more for you all as a thank you for buying and playing this game. It's far exceeded my expectations and I'm happy to see people enjoy it! New Artifacts! I've added in 5 new artifacts for you to play with! I took from concepts for scrapped characters and turned them into items for you to change up your gameplay and strategy for each run. Now you can focus on new angles, like choosing horde battles or saving up money to try and conquer each territory as you make your way up the mountain! Fixed Demo For a while now, I've been using the steam next fest demo as the demo for the game. Fortunately the game hadn't changed much between then and now, but what has changed is how many bugs and glitches existed in the original version. So I took the time to bring the demo up to date with the current version and hopefully all the old bugs have been squished. As always, if you're facing some bugs, feel free to share them in the community area and I'll make sure to note them down! Changes Gameplay Updated Demo to current version of game. Fixed a variety of old bugs that existed only in the demo. 5 new artifacts added Advance Plans - +2 attack per enemy. Heavy Wallet - +1 attack for every 50 gold. Last Stand Trinket - +4 Special when at less than half health. Priscilla's Blessing - Prevent the first hit done to any teammate. Rune cluster - +1 to Move, Passive, Attack, Special and all Range. UI Fixed some instances of the incorrect character shown as talking in a dialog Glitches Can no longer recruit Quinn multiple times (sorry) Beating the true ending of the game will now properly save Quinn's recruitment requests

    Patch 1

It's been a week and the release has been amazing! The outpouring of positive reception has far exceeded my expectations. It's been such a rewarding release, and it's not been without plenty of requests for quality of life changes, and that's what this is for! Easily the biggest change here is I've double the inventory at shops, so feel free to shop to your heart's content and even buy two artifacts if you can afford it. I've also lowered the movement on many characters, to encourage more thoughtful exploration, and enemies will now properly attack before moving, to prevent the ai from sometimes moving and doing nothing. The rest is all bug fixes, or many many quality of life features. Hotkeys always existed in the game, but should now hopefully be clearer, so it's easier to move quicker. Resolution changing is now supported, in a limited fashion, certain aspects of this game do not like moving past 16:9 ratio. Moving into the future, I'm excited to take a small break, but I'm constantly monitoring the community to make sure no deadly bugs persist, hopefully I have squashed the majority of them. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44081056/718405aea3073597419d57a0fa690a9589347589.png Gameplay Doubled the amount of items available at the shop Adjusted Map Generation of the forest and cave maps Balance Madeline Move -1 Saria Specials uses -1 Sersha Move -1 Oran Move -1 Barry Move -2 Conor move -2 Rudolph Move -1 Maeve Move -2 Spider Move +1 AI Enemies will now consider attacking before moving UI Clarified replace teammates button to "Replace Fallen Teammates" Fixed info toolbox to not hover directly over the object being looked at. Hotkeys for Attack, Move, and Special are now displayed on the buttons themselves. Added hotkeys to cycle between units using the 1-4 keys Option to change Screen resolution now available in options Changing resolution in windowed mode is now available! (Let me know if this leads to any ugly setups, I spent forever trying to prevent that.) Glitches Fixed in...

    MossRoot Releasing August 2nd!!

August 2nd It's been a long road, but I'm happy to finally officially announce the release date of MossRoot as August 2nd! I'm so excited to be able to finally share the finished project with you all, and have been spending this last month hard at work finishing the final touches of art and writing for this game. It's been an adventure getting to this point, and hope that you all will be pleased with the final product! What's left on my end? The game itself is complete. Gameplay, aside from some balancing tweaks is locked in, and barring any major bugs will not need any major changes until the official release! I have a few more pieces of art to pound out and some dialog to refine and finalize and will otherwise be playtesting as much as possible to make sure it's as bug free as it can be. A Thank You I'm a single dev, and aside from the music provided by the wonderful Sam Shandley, I've been in charge of every aspect of this games development. This has been a wonderful passion project, and it's been a fun balancing act as we get closer to release. I'm pounding out all the glitches I and playtesters can find, and if any pop up during release I will do whatever I can to fix them as they release. The amount of support and outreach I've received has been heartwarming, and I appreciate every single wishlist I've gotten. Thank you all so much, and I look forward to seeing you release day!
