When Night Comes, "The one about better performance"

Happy December Everyone! Hope all is going well! Time for the next big update to the game. This update is geared towards performance. I have spent the last few months isolating issues that were creating an inconsistent gaming experience. So let's break it all down and how the game will run better with 2.05! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------Occlusion Culling------------------- https://imgur.com/a/LRNHyyI Starting with what this is and why it is needed. Occlusion culling is a process that prevents items from rendering that are completely hidden from view (occluded). The game has always had this in from launch. I went back and rebuilt the Occlusion Culling map for both levels and have since made the view radius from the player tighter. This means, There is less stuff being rendered at a time and performance could theoretically improve. But the key part is did this help? While it did not help stabilize the FPS to a key target, it did bring up the Avg FPS. This allowed for a smoother experience with less drastic FPS drops. This was helpful but still, the game seemed inconsistent. So moving into the next part of the update that is added is forced maximum FPS. -------------------Forced Maximum FPS------------------- While having the game run with an unlimited unlocked FPS is fun, it caused the game to stuffer in the Nightmare Level when frames would drop randomly. So to counter this and create a smoother time playing the game, it is now locked at a target FPS of 30. Doing so helps the game keep up with the rendering and the experience is now much smoother than before. During QA this was the best option for helping the random drop in frames but with all things, Feedback is important so if needed we can adjust this. --------------------New Loading Screen------------------- Finally, I have now added a new loading screen when transitioning from the Prologue to the Nightmare level. No more freezing...

    When Night Comes Update 2.04

Hello Everyone! The next update to fix alot of issues is releasing this afternoon! Here is the patch notes! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patch Notes: -Fixed Lighting Issues in the Prologue level. -Removed vent sections from the prologue, You can just open the door normally to get to the laundry room. Developer note: This was done as the jumping for the vents was causing players to get stuck/ confused. -Added a new scene before the nightmare level to better explain what needs to be done to escape. -Fixed bug where the player can get soft-locked in a nightmare by jumping off the roof too early. -Fixed bug where the box fall audio will keep triggering when a player was walking multiple times near the boxes. -Increased Detection radius of statues on the altar. -Added in placement areas for the status at the altar, Easier to get into place for progressing. Along with this it now shows the altar asking for three offerings. -The darkness meter in the Nightmare level is not as intense. As time goes on the level should not get so dark as before. This was done as the previous levels made it hard to navigate the level. Developer Note: I am watching these values closely and will update them if needed or Remove the fog completely. -Updated Version number -Added an important known issues tab to the main menu. This was done to let players know of Key issues that could affect the gameplay experience. -Various small bugs and performance issues were fixed. -Added in a easier way to know where the exit is once the statues are placed ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Known issues I am still working to fix: -When loading between levels the screen can go black to load. Working on adding a loading screen to combat this. -The Text "A Way Out is Revealed" will flash nonstop once activated -Sometimes when pressing "Q" to examine items, it will not examine. Remapping ...

    WNC Developer Update

Hello everyone! I wanted to come on here and give a quick developer update. Thank you for taking the time to play the game. I understand it’s very frustrating not to be able to progress through the prologue. So, I just wanted to give an update on some upcoming changes in the next update to the game. Some key frustrations were with the physics for the boxes to get into the vent. In the upcoming update, the vent and the boxes are going to be removed. Instead, it’s just going to be a streamlined process to get to the next area. I believe this will alleviate some of the frustration and issues players were having at this level. Some more general updates are in the introduction to the Nightmare Level. There is a current bug that I am working on fixing. If the player moves too fast, the main text for what to do with the statues doesn’t appear and some players are frustrated, not understanding what to do. I’m instead changing this method. I should’ve presented this more clearly even if it was a bug. Along with the changes above, I am also adding a more direct approach to telling the player what to do with the given statues. Additionally in the nightmare level, when going into the abandoned building, you could sometimes fall off the roof without getting the key. This will sometimes block your progress from progressing causing you to reset. I have alleviated this, so if you fall off the roof, the doorway is now open for you to go back inside. There are still a few bugs that I am working on fixing such as the timer, fog, and items, resetting on a reload or death. This bug is a little more complicated so it will not be introduced in the next update. I hope you understand and thank you for your continued patience. I hope with these additional changes it would make the player experience more enjoyable. I also plan on working on additional lore as the hidden lore in the game it’s hard to find. I want the story to be up front and center. Thank you again and wish you all the best! T...
