About the Game
Inspired by the real Gold Rush era that swept across the American frontier, Forty-Niner drops you into a procedurally generated Wild West - no two frontiers, boomtowns, or ghost towns are ever the same. There's no scripted story here: gangs and factions rise out of the towns themselves, taking over territories and shifting as the world keeps moving around you - and the side quests you take can tip the balance.
A Frontier That Fights Itself
Bandit gangs and factions form organically from the towns around you, rising, falling, or taking over territory over time. Every settler follows their own schedule and forms their own opinion of you - help them, trade with them, or cross them, and word travels. Wind down at the saloon for a hand of poker, and watch the frontier's residents live lives of their own, day or night.
Reshape a Procedural Frontier
Dig tunnels, carve mines, and terraform the land itself. Boomtowns, abandoned mines, and ghost towns look different in every world you generate.
A World in Motion
Night brings real danger - bandit raids grow and wildlife becomes more aggressive once the sun goes down. Storms can kill: heavy rain drops the temperature, and fog or dusty storms can cut visibility to nothing if you're caught out unprepared.
From Tent to Train Station
Build up a homestead from a canvas tent to a full saloon and working railway, gathering resources from caves, rivers, and the open plains.
Guns, Bows, and Grit
Fight with revolvers, rifles, and bows in real third-person gunfights, customize your loadout, and take down wildlife or rival outlaws.
Live Off the Land
Plant and water tomatoes and wheat, hunt and fish for meat, and cook it all over a campfire.
Make Your Outlaw
Customize your character's look, male or female, and grow your skills through the quests and challenges you choose to take on.
Host Your Own Frontier
Play alone, or host a world right from your own PC and invite friends to join - no dedicated server required.
Every outlaw who rides into the frontier is running from something, or looking for it. Uncover why you came, one choice at a time - multiple story endings tied to your reason are planned for the full 1.0 release, with Early Access laying the groundwork first.
Wishlist Forty-Niner now and follow along as the frontier takes shape.

Dev Blog 1: Frontier Progress
Howdy, Pioneers! Long time no see! While we’ve been quiet on public announcements, our team has been continuing to build the richest, most immersive Wild West sandbox survival experience possible. Today, we’re thrilled to pull back the curtain and show you what’s coming to the frontier. An Infinite, Living FrontierThe world in our game spans tens of kilometers of untamed land, procedurally generated for every new run - ensuring every playthrough is a completely unique adventure. Powered by procedural world seeds, every new playthrough generates a completely fresh, unexplored frontier. The world is divided into distinct biomes, each featuring its own environmental conditions, unique ores, wildlife, and strategic value. Our custom world generation and rendering pipeline allow you to see distant mountain ranges without bottlenecking your CPU or GPU. That mountain on the horizon? It’s real, fully reachable, and will take roughly 2 in-game days on foot or half a day on horseback! We built responsive grass and flora systems that dynamically react to weather conditions, biome shifts, player movement, and terraforming.Living Towns & Trade NetworksBeyond raw nature, we’ve invested heavily into living roads and dynamic trade networks.Living settlements will dynamically communicate, trade resources, and form alliances with one another. As a player, you can choose to be an independent cowboy, a town sheriff, or a trader - especially in multiplayer, where dynamic player-driven economies and town politics come alive on dedicated servers.Custom Engine, Seamless Performance & Modding ToolkitTo deliver full terrain destructibility, living NPC world, underground caves, thousands of synchronized physics objects, and infinite procedural worlds without dropping frame rate, we spent over a year engineering our own custom game engine! We stayed quiet because we wanted to deliver real results. And we’re taking it one step further. The engine is built from the ground up to serve as your creative ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Stan)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev Blog #0: Enhanced Graphics, New Art & Plans
Hey everyone! It’s been a wild six months since we first announced Forty-Niner, and we’ve finally got some sneak peaks we’re excited to share—from shiny new graphics to a peek at how NPCs secure and expand their territories in the frontier. Intrigued? Buckle up for a deep dive into the latest highlights and developments on our journey so far. ENHANCED GRAPHICSWe received tons of feedback on our original low-poly aesthetic, but our true aim is to create a rich, stylized cartoon look with a modern twist. That meant finding the right artist to help realize this vision—and yes, it’s been a lot of work! The hardest part is that we have a ton of items to create from scratch and fit into something new and still, fun to play. We started small by redesigning items like weapons and tools: Our inspiration comes from cartoons, blending a playful art style with the grittier atmosphere of the Wild West. But items alone aren’t enough to show the new look—characters matter too. Here’s our previous character from the reveal trailer: While we loved the low-poly design, we wanted something more immersive that truly draws you into Forty-Niner’s world. We’ve been exploring different references and iterating on the visual style to find that perfect balance between ‘cartoon fun’ and ‘frontier realism’: Upgrading to a more detailed art style means factoring in extra texture work, subtle color gradients, and unique forms for everything you see in-game. Our new artist’s expertise in texturing has been a huge help. Beyond characters, we’ve also revamped the environment—trees, flowers, grass—giving everything a fresh coat of stylized paint while still maintaining that frontier vibe. Some experimenting we started with building own trees simulations, such as this: More enhancing is undergoing for building system and animals looks. Don’t worry if you’re on a lower-end system; we’ve put just as much effort into optimization as we have into improving fidelity, so you can enjoy Forty-Niner smoothly ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Stan)AnnouncementsOfficial
