Embark on Ghweros' quest to protect Woikos village from monsters, making tough decisions that alter your fate. Unearth mysteries through strategic combat and choice-driven gameplay in this unique adventure.

About this game

Willow Guard is a story-driven dark fantasy RPG combining difficult-but-rewarding action hack-n-slash gameplay enhanced by deck building and layers of deep choice-based story. Play as Ghweros, a Willowguard investigating a series of monster attacks on a remote village close to the northern Hinterlands. Discover a hand-crafted, original fantasy world full of uplifted animals, absent gods, and thousand years of buried secrets to unfold.

Isometric Action Gameplay

Build an action deck of specialized Willow Guard abilities that you activate as you battle through hordes of invading monsters in retro-inspired hack n' slash gameplay through lusciously rendered pixel art levels. Slash, dash and spell cast your way to victory over increasingly difficult foes across the single-player campaign.

Become a Willowguard

When not in combat, control Ghweros in his investigation of the village of Woikos and its secrets, by speaking to a diverse cast of characters. Use an innovative system of clue-and-item gathering to uncover new locations, characters and mysteries, and slowly unravel the story through fully-realized, choice based interactive fiction gameplay.

Build your Character

Willow Guard features non-traditional levelling, where you improve your character by improving your gear, stacking your deck with new abilities, and getting better at the game itself. In the story mode, your choices help shape what kind of Willowguard you are through the Inclination system. Regardless of how you choose to play, your choices will shape the ultimate fate of Woikos - and possibly the whole world!

Craft, Upgrade, Loot

Crafting cards and upgrading equipment requires materials, which are gathered from both killed monsters and found during dungeon runs, or gained as rewards from quests, or traded with the mysterious Merchant. Decide how to use your resources wisely, and build the perfect combination of equipment and deck to take on the evils that plague Tersa!

Version 1.7 - The Rebalance Update (+ sales & Gamescom!)

Hello Willowguards! It's been a little second, but we've kept busy in our burrows. First things first - version 1.7! It's not quite the content update we would've wanted, but there was so much bug-fixing and balancing work being done under the hood, that we thought it best to give y'all access to this version already! Also as an excuse to make this post. Without further ado:Version 1.7 - the Rebalance UpdateSubtle rebalancing that touches on every part of the game (both original and Frostreign), specifically around the number of monsters spawned at once. There are now some limits to how many nasties will surround you at once (although if you run around blindly and attract every monster in Woikos, you will still be overwhelmed) - no changes have been made to the NUMBER of monsters spawned, just their cadence. Hopefully, this will lead to some encounters being a little better balanced. It's still the same game, just perhaps a little less 'bullet hell'-like. Let us know how it feels!Changes to how Action Surges work: all action surges (even the empty one, before you unlock the inclination ones) now RETURN ONE CARD TO YOUR DRAW DECK. Tenacity, as before, still returns more, but also recharges any cards you currently have in your slots (identical to the Reagent Satchel cards - except you never run out of Tenacity!). This will hopefully encourage players to more freely use the cards they have, as no matter what Action Surge you are equipped with, you will always have access to your discarded cards again (eventually).Since this change makes the Obelisks a little less useful, they have been given an additional use. Aside from shuffling your entire discard deck back into your hand, Obelisks now also grant a single use of the Second Chance ability. The Second Chance ability works like it does in many games - when reduced to 0 hit points, instead of dying, you will recover your health and armor after a few seconds, and get back in the fight. Of course, if you died knee-deep in ...

    Demo Re-released!

Hello Willowguards!Just a quick note to let you know, in honour of Next Fest and of the upcoming Steam Summer Sale, we'll be re-releasing the Willow Guard demo, in a slightly shorter format. Previously, the demo was the -entire first day- of the game, which was perhaps a little too much of a good thing. Now we've cropped it down to the beginning, with a good chunk of story and some badger-fighting: still enough to get a taste, we hope.As per usual, your save carries over to the full game. Now that the pace of updates is a bit slower, we'll hopefully be able to keep up with updating the demo too! So those of you who have been on the fence - this is a great chance to check the game out and see if it's for you!

    Updates and updates

Hello Willowguards! This update has two updates in it: an update for Willow Guard, bringing with it a bunch of fixes and small additions, AND, an update on Willow Guard™! First the boring regular stuff, i.e., the changelog: Version 1.6.7Fixed a bug where the companion would sometimes get stuck.Fixed an error in the penultimate dungeon in Frostreign that made it impossible to pass.Updates to companion (and some player) abilities that do Area damage: the cub's attacks now properly do splash damage, some more than others.Hyperfocus now works as it's supposed to again, no longer slowing down player cooldowns.Fixed certain scenarios that made immunity (e.g. from the Herbalist's Ring) no longer work; also added 'Immunity' popups when damage is entirely absorbed by immunity.Fixed some animation bugs, making some animations not play when they were supposed to.When asked if you want to override a slot, the popup now contains more information on what is being overridden.A few minor UI fixes in the journal.FIxed some spelling errors and string errors here and there. That out of the way, this post also has a second announcement (one that has already gone out to those who follow our social media/discord, of course) - namely that we are making a WILLOW GUARD BOARDGAME!Introducing Willow Guard: Hollowroot, a cooperative card-based dungeon crawler for 1–4 players. Inspired by the world of Willow Guard and built specifically for tabletop adventures, Hollowroot combines strategic card-and-dice gameplay, unique character abilities and exploration mechanics into a fast-paced, replayable co-op dungeon-crawling adventure. We aim to have it launched by the end of the year if possible and we will share in this server the news and progress exclusively, but if you want to get news directly to your email, feel free to sign up to the newsletter: https://bit.ly/4vy7Q5Z

    Version 1.6.6

Hello Willowguards! After a little delay, here's patch 1.6.6, which addresses a number of niggling issues (thank you for all the reports). You might also bump into some new nasties on your adventures through the Atalakas, and some of the boss encounters may be a little more challenging than before...Patch notes:You can now use cards normally even after using an ability dispenser.Enemies no longer sometimes ignore you even if you are in their LOS.Dialogs no longer get 'stuck' when skipping through them quickly.VFX hit effects no longer re-activate sometimes when the player sees them.Journal attributes now update properly when changing equipment.Attribute increase shrines no longer give you too many copies of itself.New boss combat music for Frostreign.New boss abilities for Frostreign.2 new monsters for Frostreign. Some typo fixes and minor level design fixes (e.g. well-checking update spam, lumberyard underground entrance) for Willow Guard. Some general level updates for Frostreign. And some other general fixes as is tradition. This update does not yet contain any significant content updates, but hopefully it will make your play more comfortable! There was a bug with the Art of Willow Guard pack where the art wasn't being uploaded - if you've bought the DLC, you should now find a new folder in your local files with the art! Sorry for the confusion! Now wish us luck at the Finnish Games Awards for Game of the Year 2025, which is happening TODAY (21.5)!
