About this game

A free game by the co-creator of the XBox's Fable series.

Five hundred years ago, the land of Caldera was plunged into endless darkness. Decades later, five moons rose in the sky, bringing light to the world and strange Gods with it. With them came the Dreams: calls to Devotion promising supernatural Gifts.

Thus, the new Calderan civilisation was born; a world of Devotion and Dreamers, Gods and Gifts, with a Dreamless Archon acting as the Gods' mortal representative. But Archons are not eternal, and a successor must be found.

You are Dreamless: free to choose your own destiny, to ask questions others dare not, or even become Archon yourself.

What will you do, Dreamless one?

Moonring is a retro-inspired open-world, turn-based, tile RPG in the style of the classic Ultima games, but created from the ground up with modern design sensibilities.

The world's geography is hand-designed, but the deadly dungeons beneath the surface reconfigure each time you leave... or die.

Travel, trade, sneak, fight and sail the world of Caldera. Speak with the townsfolk, learn Caldera's secrets, and challenge the Archon for his throne... or even overthrow the Gods themselves!

Features:
- Large, hand-designed open world
- An infinite supply of dungeons generated using your character name
- Over 100 varied enemy types, from fodder to bosses
- 35 unique Gifts from the Gods, their usage changing with the moon phases
- Sailing, ship-to-ship combat and boarding
- A Dungeon Synth OST with over 50 tracks, all made using retro Mod Trackers!
- A hidden magic system and many other mysteries

A note from the creator:

Hi folks. I've loved RPGs since the early 1980s, and grew up playing games like Lord British's 'Ultima' series and early Roguelikes. This is my love-letter to a style of gaming that has largely fallen out of fashion: with its vivid, bright sprites overlaid on stark black backgrounds, true open-world gameplay, and lack of handholding. The days I spent playing these games were spent in joyful exploration and discovery, venturing into the dark unknown, a co-author of the experience, filling in the gaps left by the primitive art with my imagination. For those of you who did the same, I hope Moonring recaptures some of the spirit of those days for you. For those who did not, I hope that the more modern conveniences you find in this game allow you to catch a glimpse of what we did 40 years ago.

My heartfelt thanks to all who spared even a moment to play this. Please be kind to my mistakes. I will fix them. :-)

- Dene

    Build 0.0.958, V 1.0.11

We had an issue where piercing attacks leading to death could cause a system-wide malfunction, leading to a blue-screen and blah blah blah. I isolated the problem, and the fix was trivial. Shouldn't give us any more problems from here. It's... 22:13, GMT. There are no comms from the pod, and no lights to trace its path by.The lumoscite chunks we picked up on the last ball of rock are now in transit. Somewhere out in that big smear of void and stardust is a little grey container travelling at about 500mps, forced to obey the same stupid laws of Newtonian mechanics, gravitation and thermodynamics that we all do. In this regard we're the same. I think about it far too often. I think these days I'd consider myself an animist - to a non-crazy degree. I feel a small sense of sympathy, empathy and connection to silly things. Inanimate things: the drones, recovery modules and even this pod. When I find myself hating the cramped space and ever-present plastic smell I'm aware that it's the same emotions elicited by a partner's too-loud-cereal crunching, or the dog's barking long after the mailman's fled.As for the sample pod... damn. It's so dark out there. It has no lights. No comms. It's just barrelling through space, alone, following on a complex arc worked out by an uncaring computer we assume didn't make a mistake. Same way we got here. It'll be picked up by a drogue-net once gravity has decelerated it to a reasonable speed. Then it'll be pulled in, opened, and probably discarded. To travel all that way without complaint or expectation of reward, to fulfil a mission so laden with risk and potential for disaster ("Sorry, we hit the euro-sat relays! Oops!") and then just end up in a trash can. It seems wrong. Ungrateful. But then I'm aware it's the same rules that apply to me, too. Even the little fanfare I'll get when (if) I return from this mission will be largely performative: an action taken to assuage those feeling guilt. For me? No amount of parades and convertibles ...

Endgame crash fixedIt's come to my attention that some people did not care for the extended patch notes. It's a minority, and people primarily make comments on sites like this when they don't like things, so my assumption is that the majority do like them. That said, I shall be keeping these patch notes brief and unremarkable. See above. That's what this patch does. Move along. Nothing to see here. Bye. I said bye. You don't need to read any more. Really. There's nothing of any importance, nor of any entertainment value. Sir! If you are still reading at this point, it's your own choice. I've already imparted all the informational material you could possibly hope for. It's in the very first line. Here, I'll repeat it so you can go about your usual business: "Endgame crash fixed". Remember this? It was a few paragraphs ago, so perhaps you forgot? I know the modern world makes focus quite difficult with its unending frippery and monetized distractions. My dear, Sir, you're still reading, despite your making it perfectly clear to me that you've no interest in the 'stupid madness' and 'confounding mess' these patch notes usually contain. You tell me I should 'take my meds' and then continue engaging long after the scant attention you were paid has faded, and the brief human contact you desired has turned to a cold, indifferent nothing. I do not know what to tell you at this point, Sir. It would seem you're a glutton for punishment. You take no accountability for your own actions. You place your hand in the fire and then whimper 'I am burning' to a world baffled by your choices. You interpret this as cruel indifference to your suffering. The world is not indifferent. It's confused. You are confusing. Sir, you are still here. At this point, I think I am beginning to wonder if you deliberately engage with things which irritate or anger you merely in order to feel something. How horrible. How human. When we asked you into this space, we thought you might leave such things be...

Moonring DX now on available on Nintendo Switch

Hi folks, No weird patch notes this time. Just a rather simple announcement. After 6 years of development, 2 years of improvement, and countless hours of making sure the game doesn't fall over or inconvenience anyone to an embarrassing degree, Moonring is now on Nintendo Switch. You there... you have a question? Is it the same game as the current PC/Steamdeck build? Yes. But with the DLC available from the start. Is it free on Switch? Not this time, I'm afraid. My reasons for making Moonring free in 2023 have been made fairly public: everything sucked from 2020 on*, and I wanted to give something away that might brighten peoples' days. This time, because the Switch port cost me a lot of extra time and money to make, it has a price tag. I hope it's not too high for those who were really looking forward to a light portable version. The PC version is still here, just as free as ever, and that's never going to change. I made a promise. So with that: thanks, as ever, for your support. Yours, Fluttermind (*Yes, I know things still suck. Sorry. I didn't do it, I promise)

    V1.0.8 Build 955

Hi! It's been a while... no, sit down, please. Come now. We don't have to be so formal. We've known each other for a while, and you know I don't really don't value that kind of stiff interaction. It's so very... false. Performative. Oh, I took the liberty of ordering your usual - I presume things haven't changed so much that you've changed... that? No. I thought not. Ha. That would be quite something, wouldn't it? I'll get straight to the point. It's come to my att- ... ...Jesus. Hmm. You know, I came very close to being a cliche there for a moment. Who says 'it's come to my attention' in real life? I know this isn't real life: not the confining walls of bullshit and fakery that passes for the office workplace. But I wish it were. Real. A place where people laugh and cry, and snot comes out of their nose, and their makeup runs, and the chaos and ruin of life is commented upon, and manifest... and honest. And safe. I know you feel the same way. I think we share some attitudes, some... shall we say 'strong' views on certain subjects. Oh, here it comes! ("Thank you! Yes, over there is fine.") Okay, he's gone. You can come back. Anyway. As I was saying: we share certain attitudes, even though we don't work on the same fl- Wait. Do you even have a designated floor? Hmm. I'd never considered that before. I suppose you aren't really confined by those things, are you? Lord, I envy you in that. You can kind of move where you wish. I don't suppose you even have a supervisor? No. That would be odd, wouldn't it? Anyway. I found something I thought was rather interesting as I was moving my desk drawers (I loathe hot-desking, I must say). It's hehttps://www.mediafire.com/file/7j7foyv34qlr7sj/MR2-20251023-2325-23.4091827.mp4/filere. I don't really know all the implications, or how it affects anything, but... I don't know. I saw it and it fired up something inside me. Look, I'll get to the point. I'm tired of things around here, and - if you watch the news for 5 seconds - it's not ...

    Build 952, V1.0.5

I have absolutely no idea what happened here. None. I mean, sometimes coding seems like a discrete, deterministic science, and other times it seems to follow entirely its own horrible logic. People suggest that Git is a solution, and that any record of the changes you've made to your code should yield a clear answer to any peculiar behaviour that results. Regrettably this is not so. It's a crock. Anyone who tells you differently hasn't been coding for long enough, or lacks even the tiniest amount of imagination. Of course, your milage may vary, but any claims to the contrary make me suspicious. Read this patch note carefully and you'll not only realise I'm perfectly correct, but, like me, you want things to work one-hundred percent of the time. Honestly, your time on earth is limited. To accept less is just wacky. You know what to do.
