About this game

NULLSPACE redefines the classic space RTS experience by seamlessly merging the strategic depth of fleet command with the immersive thrill of direct squadron control.

Discover a retrofuturistic universe where you'll construct stations, gather resources, and command fleets across star systems. Witness the spectacle of epic space battles as hundreds of ships clash, brought to life with detailed destruction simulation and realistic physics. Take command from a tactical overview and orchestrate your fleet across the battlefield, or assume direct control as a squadron leader and lead your wing to engage key targets and deploy powerful abilities.

In this story-driven campaign, immerse yourself in a universe inspired by the Golden Age of Sci-Fi, where retro-futuristic aesthetics meet deep existential themes. Lead or challenge factions like the democratic Hegen, the transhumanist Dominion, and the resourceful Junkers as they vie for survival and dominance. At the heart of the story lies a unique take on the Fermi Paradox, a revelation that forces humanity to question its ambition and the ultimate destiny of existence itself.

  • The Junkers: Survivors and scavengers, the Junkers live on the fringes of space, salvaging remnants of humanity’s past to build a precarious future. Their resourcefulness and ingenuity allow them to adapt to any situation, but their distrust of centralized authority makes them fiercely independent—and difficult to unify.

  • The Hegen: A powerful, militaristic faction rooted in discipline and order. The Hegen values tradition and hierarchy, believing that humanity's salvation lies in strict control and unwavering loyalty. Their massive fleets and technological prowess make them a force to be reckoned with, but their rigidity may blind them to alternative solutions.

  • The Dominion: Visionaries, innovators, and seekers of progress, the Dominion is driven by the belief that humanity’s evolution lies in embracing new ideas and technologies. They see opportunity in the chaos, pushing boundaries to forge a brighter future, though their relentless pursuit of advancement often clashes with the values of other factions.

Epic Space Battles: Deploy a full armada ranging from nimble fighters to colossal destroyers, and experience the clash of hundreds of ships in massive space battles. Witness the visceral spectacle as capital ships are realistically torn apart, piece by piece, leaving behind hulking debris fields in a vast battlefield.

Direct Squadron Control: Instantly switch between commanding your entire fleet to piloting individual squadrons. Unleash devastating special abilities unique to each ship, target weak points on enemy destroyers, and employ tactics and formations that can decide the fate of the battle.

Dynamic Environments: Turn the battlefield into a weapon. Use massive asteroids as cover, or shatter them to unleash dust clouds that blind enemies and disrupt their plans. Each environment offers opportunities and dangers, demanding cunning and adaptability.

Base Building:  Construct and manage a network of bases, carefully balancing the demands of resource extraction and territorial expansion. Invest in powerful upgrades and specialized abilities to create a flexible and formidable fleet. Adapt to the unique challenges and resource opportunities presented by each planet as you confront powerful and vastly different factions.

Story-driven Campaign: Engage with a compelling narrative through a series of crafted missions, each chapter advancing the overarching story.  Discover a unique retrofuturistic setting with deep lore, brought to life through sweeping character arcs and evocative storytelling. Explore the essence of a spacefaring civilization—its triumphs, tragedies, and the ever-present threat of existential risks.

    Faction Reveal : Hegen Republic

Hey everyone,We’ve been working on Nullspace for a while now, and we want to start sharing more of the world behind it. Let’s begin with the Hegen Republic, and walk you through our visual-first approach: we started with a direction, developed the aesthetics, then built the lore around what the design suggested. For the Hegens, we were originally inspired by brutalist design, which our concept artist interpreted as bunker-like superstructures and tiered decks that visually reflect a stratified society.Originally, we intended the ships to be built out of literal concrete, with a sandstone coloured grooved concrete finish ala 1960s British brutalist buildings, or the Harkonnen ships from Villeneuve’s Dune. Extending the British brutalism analogy, we envisioned the ships aging like buildings such as the Tricorn and Barbican: structures that began as spectacular heralds of the future to dilapidated symbols of misplaced optimism. We wanted Hegen ships to share the same aesthetic, reflecting the decay of power. While the concept art was exciting, it didn’t look right ingame. We found the concrete material didn't look interesting and often gave the ships an unfinished look. After much deliberation, we switched to ordinary metal shading while still retaining the core brutalist aesthetic. Here is the result: one of the earliest ships we designed for the Hegens. The Hegen "Executioner"The Hegen "Executioner" is a 315-meter destroyer with a crew of 350. Built on the “brutalist” idea, it is not meant to look sleek or sophisticated. The goal was to have a ship that keeps working, no matter the situation. That thinking led the Hegens to prefer missile ordnance over firing massive kinetic rounds. The missiles are less precise but are devastating and offer better battlefield coverage. To maximize carrying capacity, the “Accord” missiles are manufactured on demand from raw materials stored within. The missile itself, the QL-4 “Archer”, has a 50 kiloton yield. Not especially powerful by to...

Command fleets or pilot mouthwatering starships in Nullspace, a strategy game with a "unique" take on the Fermi Paradox

Tasty-looking space games fill the atmosphere nowadays like satellite launch debris, but perhaps you'll find room in your weirdly adapted magnetic fishing net for one more - Kaigan's Nullspace. I came across it in yesterday's Indie Fan Fest stream, and I quite like the cut of its torpedo bays. Nullspace grabs me for a couple of reasons. One is its "retrofuturistic universe", which strikes me as both sleek and cosy. It's kind of chibi Homeworld. The kitbashed ships come alive with swivelling turrets and manoeuvring jets, but something about the way they're proportioned, patterned and lit also makes me think of freshly piped cake icing. I also quite like the Star Fox-style jabbering heads of unit commanders in the bottom corner. Read more
