About this game

I once heard a story...

There's a marketplace under the mountain where anything can be bought and sold. Visitors wear masks to become faceless strangers. It's home to the unscrupulous, the outcast, and the desperate.

You're one of the desperate.

Strangers with their own secrets and ambitions can show you ways through the market. They'll guide you to your goal, but don't trust them to have your best interests at heart.

Features

🔹First chapter available as a demo, second chapter of three available in early access.

🔹Choose the protagonist's name, pronouns, and mask.

🔹Four mysterious love interests.

🔹Over 200k words (70k in the demo, 130k in the early access release)

🔹A dark, mature story with many ways to fail.

🔹Timed choices! Or turn them off for an easier game.

🔹Original music by Cajsa.

🔹Use the default, OpenDyslexic, or Atkinson Hyperlegible font for ease of reading.

Characters

Keir - Sarcastic Thief

"When I compliment you — if that ever happens — you’ll know."

Where there is a market, there are thieves. Keir steals to feed hungry mouths, but never forget that to survive at the fringes requires the most ruthless kind of pragmatism.

Cirrus - Humble Priest

"Penance is of the utmost importance here, and I think you'd best keep that soul of yours unblemished."

The church of the Lunar God offers sanctuary to all who come to its doors and Cirrus will give aid to those who request it. But there is no such thing as a gift in the market, and whatever aid Cirrus grants, he will want something in return.

Francesco - Spirited Adventurer

"There are so many sensations I've never felt before, and I'm making it my mission to finally live my life to the fullest!"

Sweet and sun-kissed, people such as him does not typically come to the marketplace. Can you trust this seemingly innocent man, in a place where everyone keeps dark secrets and appearances could be the most misleading of all?

Oleander - Merchant Gadfly

"You want my attention? You've got it, minx. Meet me later and you'll see what that gets you."

A market needs things to sell, and Oleander is happy to provide anything you can ask for, at a price. Hedonic and charming, he makes all his work into games, but he won't say to what end he's playing.

Vesper - Cursed Protagonist

"The people down here have beautiful taste..."

No one goes under the mountain without a good reason. Unfortunately, you have a great reason. Whatever you were aboveground, now is the time to abandon it.

Choose between 3 different masks

Streamer Policy

All information is available on our website, but in short: show as much of the demo content (Chapter 1) as you like, you may stream paid content freely as long as there is commentary, but VODs of paid content should only show ~20% of the script; this currently comes out to approximately 30-60 minutes of material for Chapter 2 total depending on reading speed.

    Monthly Round-up: July 2026

Hello, hello my beautiful raccoon friends! Contra to what I've been constantly saying about July being vacation season here in Sweden, August is actually my vacation time, so you're getting this update after I finally got access to a computer once again! Still, while I've spent the first part of August running around ancient cities and wearing out the soles of my shoes, July has been plenty of fun for us! Art Mugi’s artistic efforts have been nothing short of heroic in July, pushing forward both with the secret project and the NPC silhouettes. She and Nekome have been figuring out the ideal workflow for the two of them while building out the Mouse Hole cast (since they’re important, have strong personalities, and have reasons to have similar looks, it seems like a reasonable place to start!) and while there’s been some stumbles as Nekome gets a handle on the art style and communication is sorted out, the progress so far has been amazing! Once again, I can’t show any sprites, as Mugi wants to save the surprise, but I think this censored version should still fly pretty well (more than two characters are finished, this is just a mock-up).We’re also, slowly but steadily, implementing the new art into the game. I cannot tell you how satisfying it is to see the characters fill out scenes that used to be full of shadows. And some of the NPCs are even getting a couple of variations to work with, so they’re feeling even more alive.Writing Tobi and I were able to get a bunch of writing done this month, much to our huge thrill. The big headline for this month: Tobi has finished up the skeleton phase for Cirrus! This means that while they’re written in a form I would lovingly call “not fit for public release”, all the major story beats, branches, and choices are technically in place. Technically because, boy howdy, I don’t think anyone wants to play a game where the choices look like this:The next major phase of work for Tobi is going to be replacing all the silly text with pro...

    Embrace the Unknown

I did say we were going to talk about this more! Rotten Raccoons is pleased to share that we've been invited to team up with ten other gorgeous indie romance VNs for the month of July. The eleven games in the collection each explore embracing the unknown. As the marketplace proves, the unknown can be alluring, can be thrilling, and can be dangerous. And for many, it can also become home. So, what new and strange worlds and people will you embrace?

    Monthly Round-up: June 2026

Hello, hello to our beautiful raccoon friends! It’s been a glorious June (if a bit hot for a bit there!) with plenty to celebrate. So let’s talk about what’s happened here in the raccoon den, and what’s going to happen in the coming month! Events & Sales First off, at time of posting we’re in the middle of our annual Summer Sale! OBSCURA is on sale with a 25% discount, which some of you may have spotted is our biggest discount to date (compared to the 20% previously). If you’ve only played the demo and are looking to pick up the game, this is a pretty good time to get that done! We’re also taking part in a little summer cross-promotion event hosted by DEADline Studios: Embrace the Unknown. The games taking part are romances with darker themes/aesthetics, monstrous LIs, or unknown worlds, so you can probably guess why we were invited to participate. I am champing at the bit to play all the games involved, so instead of rhapsodizing about them individually here’s a little preview video that DEADline helpfully put together!Embrace the Unknown will be taking part across all of July, so there’s plenty of time to give our fellow participants a look (and us, if you’ve found us from a different game)! We’ll definitely be chatting more about it a little later.Art Mugi has been working like crazy on two Obscura-related things this month, and while one of them is still very hush hush, we’re finally ready to announce the other! We are getting those NPC silhouettes filled in 🎉🎉🎉 We’re working with another artist, Nekome, while Mugi supervises and guides her work, in order to make the world of Obscura feel a bit bigger and more populated! For the time being we’re not going to reveal any designs; Mugi wants to save that surprise for a bit later. Buuuuut I think she’ll let me get away with showing a mock-up she did with one of the first completed characters, if I censor it properly. We as a team went bananas over this, lemme tell you.Music We don’t have much to report regarding Obscur...

    Monthly Round-up: May 2026

Whew, hello my beautiful raccoon friends! We’ve all made it through May, which I would consider a massive success! What a beautiful, bananas month. I’ll be up front and say that this month’s update is very small, on account of everyone being crazy busy. Just for myself, I spent all month doing research, writing my magister thesis, catching a cold, and doing some international travel to attend a wedding. A really cool and fun time! But OBSCURA did get put on the back burner this month for me because of that. So, what can we share about the merry month of May? Tobi is once again the raccoon of the month, as she was able to get a ton of good work done before the back half of May swallowed her whole with a major personal obligation. Cirrus’ script skeleton is looking extremely good, and while I’m not about to make any definitive predictions it does look like she’ll be entering the fleshy stage of development at a good pace. She’ll definitely be getting there before me!As for a script preview, this little section gave me a good chuckle. Cirrus at higher affection is very different from lower affection in a way I find very funny. And now we’re in June, my favourite month of the year, so hopefully I’ll be able to wrangle more time to work on Obscura! Have a glad midsommar, a happy pride, and we’ll be back again to talk next month!Love, The Rotten Raccoons Team 🦝🩵

    Monthly Round-up: April 2026

Hello, hello, my beautiful raccoon friends! It’s May, the sun is shining, the weather is warming up, and we just got off a wonderful long weekend! It’s been a busy month, though unfortunately not as much for raccoon-y reasons as we’d like. Still, let’s look at the progress we’ve made! Happenings So, the most important news of the day is that we’re taking part in two events this month! The Otome Games Celebration has started at time of posting, which is a celebration of a major branch of romance VNs with female MCs (or optionally-female MCs, like our Vesper!) and (mostly) male LIs. Immediately after that, to the second, the Storyteller’s Fest kicks off! It highlights great narrative-focused games, and we’re as thrilled as ever to be included. Obscura is going to be on sale for both events on Steam and Itch, so if you were looking for a moment to pick up the game on a discount, you’ve got two weeks to make it happen. We’re also taking part in a little bundle on Steam with some dev friends! The Magic & Mystery bundle has Obscura, as well as Made Marion, Sigh of the Abyss, The Good People (Na Deoine Maithe), Alaris, and The Demon’s Apple. The fun part about that is that this is one of those bundles where if you own some of the games in it already, Steam just politely ignores them, adds up the prices of the games you don’t have, and slaps on the bundle discount (an extra 10% in this case) on top of that. So, if you’re looking to get a couple of romance VNs in the merry month of May, that might be the way to do it. The bundle will be running all month, and right now the deal is extra juicy since most of the games are on sale 👀Monthly Progress As for the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes, there’s a lot less that we can talk about. We’re currently working with some amazing freelance creatives on a little side-project, with Mugi directing them between all her work. We’re excited to show off what we’ve been working on, once we get the chance!I have done a teeny bit of wo...
