About this game
Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning (phew, what a long name! That means it MUST be GOOD!)
*Ahem* Anyways...
The game is meant to help those who want to learn Japanese in a FUN way! It is a top down RPG-Lite centered around exploration, finding vocabulary words in the world by interacting with objects, playing minigames, and using the vocabulary you learned in each area to gain advantage when fighting enemies! You might unravel a mystery, learn more than you thought you would, and become emotionally attached to some of the characters along the way! Like, who's this cute lil guy runnin' around? YOU'LL FIND OUT!
Fight alongside your party members against monsters that are mostly based on Yokai from Japanese folklore in that classic turn-based RPG kind of way! Level up to become proficient in physical and magical combat to deal devastating damage to your foes!
If you are new to learning Japanese, no problem! The game starts by teaching you the basics of Hiragana, one of the alphabets of the Japanese language! You also learn Katakana as well!
You will have access to all the “charms” or vocabulary words you collect to study when outside of battle through your trusty Game-Buddy, who manages everything from inventory to vocab to saving your game file. Game-Buddy also has a Hiragana and Katakana reference guide that include visual representations of mnemonics to help you retain all this new information and a sound clip of the kana being pronounced!
Speaking of sound clips, they were made by professional voice over artist Ko Takehiro and cover the Kana, Vocabulary, and Phrases, so you'll hear them as pronounced by a native speaker!
The game is also playable on the Steamdeck!
We do not use romaji, so be warned, you will either learn to read Hiragana and Katakana or you will not have a good time. Though we give you the resources to learn, it will ultimately be up to you to retain the knowledge needed to succeed, and we think anyone who really wants to learn can and will succeed!
Do you think you have what it takes? We think you do!

Unity Application Vulnerability Patch 10/06/2025
Hello! Unity recently let us know there was a vulnerability in applications built using their software.Per Unity themselves: Applications that were built using affected versions of the Unity Editor are susceptible to an unsafe file loading and local file inclusion attack depending on the operating system, which could enable local code execution or information disclosure at the privilege level of the vulnerable application. There is no evidence of any exploitation of the vulnerability nor has there been any impact on users or customers. They provided a patching tool that both devs and players can use for these applications to mitigate the vulnerability (specifically patching the .DLL file). This update includes the patched DLL file for Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning. We will continue to monitor the situation and update the game files again if needed. Thank you for trusting us and playing our game and for all the new players who got it during the recent Autumn sale, we hope you enjoy the it and have fun on your learning journey! Be well and until next time! -ZachRead full article on Community Announcements (ZarckyHerms)Patch NotesOfficial
Small Video Codec Update
Hello! Just a quick video codec update so videos used in the game work better on the Steam Deck (we noticed they would sometimes convert themselves without issues, but other times, they would stay broken, and we finally figured out why!) We are also working on a small stand-alone vocabulary game that we may announce here soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that! Ok dokey, that's it for now. Until next time!Read full article on Community Announcements (ZarckyHerms)Patch NotesOfficial
Some Holiday Minigame Fixes and An Update on State of Cloud Saving 12/23/2024
Hello all! There have been a couple little updates we've been meaning to get around to and some things that we've looked into that we wanted to talk about before for the end of the holiday season as a lot of people have a little more time to invest in playing games during this time and/or may be starting our game to help with their new years resolutions. Updates The gameplay changes mainly involve updating some of the arcade minigames to be a little less difficult, especially at the start of the game. We also finally removed the "Feedback" button from the main menu because we're well out of Early Access and I try to keep my eye out for issues in the Steam forums anyways. About Cloud Saving As an update into one of the larger issues brought up in feedback/reviews, we've done a deep dive into what it would take to get cloud saving working for this game and it would be... a lot. Not only would we have to completely change the way saving works for the game (and the file type being saved), but we realized that it would undoubtedly erase all players current save data. If there were a way of doing so without putting player's data at risk, we would definitely go through with it, but it just seems too unfeasible. I'm very sorry. It happened because of our naivety in game development and is something we will take with us in the future as a lesson. Reviews On a slightly lighter note, we are SO CLOSE to 10 reviews (which is a big deal for games on Steam) so if you've played it or are planning on playing it soon, please consider leaving a review, which will give our game a little better visibility on this platform (steam considers games with less than 10 reviews kind of lesser unfortunately). We would really appreciate it and players coming in looking to see what the game is like based on your experience would benefit from an unbiased viewpoint. To Conclude I want to thank everyone who's bought and played our little game, leaving feedback good and bad, and helped us make the gam...Read full article on Community Announcements (ZarckyHerms)Patch NotesOfficial
Quick Kanji Island bug fix 11/11/24
Quick bug fix for an issue in Kanji Island that loads players outside the playable area after saving in the caves. The issue was found by player Panke (thank you Panke!), hopefully this fixes the issue, and if not, we'll figure something else out for ya! The Kanji Island caves will be treated like other instances (no saving while inside them) which should prevent the issue from reoccurring, but as always, if you find a bug or technical issue, please reach out and we'll try our best to fix it! That's all for today!Read full article on Community Announcements (ZarckyHerms)Patch NotesOfficial
Quick Fix for Minigame 6/27/24
Hello! After doing the scaling fix last week, I accidentally messed up the text for the "Discolor" minigame in the School District! Fortunately, an anonymous user submitted the issue using the issue form on the main menu (Thank you kind person! The Screenshot helped a lot in narrowing down the issue!). Hopefully the new players coming in due to the summer sale will be able to play and enjoy the game without technical issues, but if anybody comes across anything, please feel free to fill out the issue form or let us know in the Steam Discussion Boards. Alrighty, that's all for now. Hope you have fun and learn lots everybody! Cheers!Read full article on Community Announcements (ZarckyHerms)
