    The Announcement

The woman’s footsteps fell lightly on the plush carpeted floor. With arms crossed, and eyes glued forward, she paced the length of the hall. An ebb and flow of excited murmurs snaked past the heavy curtains separating her from the main stage. “Anything?” She turned to her partner. Seated in a cozy corner of the hallway, a tall woman with light hair tapped the arm of her chair. She looked composed, save the heaviness in her eyes. Her neatly-pressed dress shirt and high-waisted pants afforded her a distinguished air. The insignia of a golden beetle carved into an intricate brooch sat snuggly in the clasp of her layered bow tie and gleamed under the cold lights of the hallway. The light-haired woman stared at her reflection before unlocking her phone. “They said noon, Vidya,” she replied, “give them time.” Her eyes lingered on the long list of unanswered emails she had been avoiding. With a stifled shudder, she put the device away. “I should call them,” Vidya said. The physicist sat next to her partner, searching for the doctor’s number. “You’ll do no such thing,” the light-haired woman said, snatching Vidya’s phone. “You’re up in a few minutes, and I can’t have you thinking about this now.” “Adaline, how—” “Welcome, one and all, to this momentous occasion!” An announcer’s voice rang across the arena. It was met with an equally loud applause from the crowd. “The Vichaar-Lace Foundation has been kind enough to share something truly special for this year’s conference.” “How can you be so calm about this?” Vidya continued once the cheering had quieted down. “Because there’s no changing it now,” Adaline said. She buried her face in her hands and took a deep breath. “And because, I’m tired of thinking about it.” They held each other’s gaze. A shared silence. Comfortable. Numb. “I’m sorry…” Vidya whispered. She ran her fingers gently through Adaline’s hair. The physicist’s eyes teared up and she looked away. “I just… I don’t want to do this alone. Any of it.” “And you won’t....

    The Color of Our Eyes

I remember asking Archie about the sky. It was a crisp day in September. The colors of Fall had begun embracing the leaves as they bid farewell to their lush summer green. We had wandered down a cobbled path that broke away from the park near our home. Dappled with sunlight, the recent rains had left puddles along the way. I could almost hear Aunty Ora yelling at us about our muddy boots. As we trekked on our little adventure – Archie leading the way with a stick in hand – I came across a particularly large puddle. Thought: Can a puddle be responsible for a spark of curiosity? Conjecture: An apple spurred Newton’s quandary about gravity. So, a puddle doesn’t seem too far-fetched. The conversation I had with Archie around this puddle would show me a side of my older brother I hadn’t seen before – a part of him that was vulnerable…protected, perhaps. I crouched next to it and studied my reflection amidst the orange of the leaves. They swayed in the soft breeze behind my head – like a lion’s mane, I thought at the time. “Watchya doing there?” Archie asked. I looked up to see Archie’s towering, but lanky, frame peering into the puddle. I pointed at it, and my finger must’ve disturbed the surface of the water because I remember laughing at our silly faces. “Archie…” I said, “why does the sky look blue, but the leaves orange?” “Well, they’re two different scientific phenomena Aisle,” he said, crouching next to me, “the leaves turn orange because we have shorter days in the winter months.” Archie put down the stick and picked up a fallen leaf, twirling it between his fingers. “This means that the production of chlorophyll – the green pigment that absorbs sunlight – slows down and eventually comes to a stop,” he continued, gently bouncing on the balls of his feet, “when there’s no more green, you get orange, or yellow, or even red!” “And the sky?” I asked, still staring into the puddle. “The sky…” Archie began. He looked at the leaf in his hand for a while, as if the answer...

    Time and All Its Friends

“This is not the end. Not for you. And not for me,” he’d remind me when the world had grown a little darker. “History will remember our truths.” I remember his face – those bright eyes that saw an illusive future. I remember his laugh, his dreams, and the plastic plants he’d keep by his side. “One day, I’ll have a garden,” he’d laugh. “And in that garden, there will be life.” I remember my friend. Time has a funny way of catching up with you. It is a slow-moving behemoth that you can never outrun. Inevitably, your legs give way and the timeless monster wins. But there are some monsters that are also created… Born of a desperation to be free. Born when an empire, that is gluttonous for more, takes too much. We were born, my beloved and I, into the palms of the hungry. And in that place where life cannot thrive… should not thrive… we found our hearts. Our chosen family. The people we could call our home. We had each other, and for a while that was enough. But… like sand slipping through your fingers, our brief respite from this violent world ended. The profession of resistance teaches you to trust your instincts. And deep down I knew that time had finally caught up. The air was quieter than a whisper; the armory, undisturbed; the passages, empty. No more restrained joy. No more hushed conversations. Just silence. I woke up that day and found that I was the only one left. Their gluttony had swallowed my family whole. The monster had won. I held his hand in mine. My beloved. My friend. His body, cold. His eyes, empty. I still see their faces in my dreams, and I ask myself… dare I be selfish, for once in my life? Could I ask for an impossible wish? In this life, I’ve learned that history would sooner forget we existed than remember our truths. Sometimes, the quill of history must be taken by force. This is not the end. Not for him. Not for us.
