Behind the Pines Dev Blog 1: Animation and Rotoscoping
Welcome to Silver PinesWelcome to the first of our Behind the Pines Dev Blogs! We're aiming to share more of these behind-the-scenes blogs in the lead up to Silver Pines' release on October 8th, covering a variety of different topics including the game's worldbuilding, inspirations, and metroidvania elements. But today we wanted to peel back the curtain on Silver Pines' animation and more specifically, the rotoscoping process. This is a topic that we've been asked about a lot, so grab a cup of black coffee and settle in! It's time to head Behind the Pines. What is Rotoscoping? All of the character animation in Silver Pines uses an old-school process called rotoscoping, where animations are first captured on film and then drawn over frame-by-frame. This method was invented in 1915 and was used across animated movies in the following decades, especially when animators wanted to capture the flow of realistic human movements. For example, rotoscoping was famously used in the dance sequences in Disney's Snow White. In the gaming world, the peak of the rotoscoping age was in the 90s, where games like the original Prince of Persia and Mortal Kombat used the method. The Rotoscoping Process in Silver PinesWe used every resource available to us in the early stages of Silver Pines' development, especially when it came to capturing the in-game animations. We made costumes, filmed ourselves performing animations and then drew over the footage frame-by-frame. It's an admittedly inefficient way to work, but it gets some great results you don't see anywhere else. The main benefit of rotoscoping is that we capture those little details, like the movement in the clothing, the way hair shifts when you move, the little imperfections in how a body moves; it has a quality that's difficult to get any other way.The main downside however, is that it's incredibly labor-intensive, and Mattias, our artist and studio co-founder, has lost more than a little sanity working on the game's animations. As y...Read full article on Community Announcements (Sheldon_Team17)AnnouncementsOfficial
Check out the IGN Preview of Silver Pines!
"The pixelated art is surprisingly fluid and expressive, the voice acting is off-putting and eerie, and every part of the small town you find yourself in is just so ominous and filled with little hair-raising details all over. It’s utterly Lynchian stuff if I ever saw it."Read the full IGN preview of Silver Pines:https://www.ign.com/articles/silver-pines-preview-it-plays-and-looks-like-if-alan-wake-were-made-in-the-90sWishlist Silver Pines on Steam:Click here to join the Silver Pines DiscordKeep up to date with Silver Pines:Follow Silver Pines on XFollow Silver Pines on TikTokFollow Silver Pines on InstagramRead full article on Community Announcements (Sheldon_Team17)Press Coverage
Taking A First Look At Silver Pines—SpooktroidVania
I genuinely didn’t know anything about Silver Pines when an opportunity to get a First Look at it was presented, but there were four words that genuinely caught my eye: survival-horror, side-scrolling Metroidvania (despite my disdain for the term). I genuinely haven’t played an interesting side-scrolling survival horror since Lone Survivor: Director’s Cut all the way back in the halcyon days of 2014, so I was eager to see what was new and exciting a full decade later. Thankfully, CGM was invited to sit down with Wych Elm’s co-founders Mattais Snygg and Linus Larsson to learn a little bit more about Silver Pines. What we were shown was a game that looks to be lovingly crafted as an homage not only to the genre of Metroid-likes, but also a cerebral experience that blends horror with mystery. Larsson began by talking about the inspirations that went into the design of Silver Pines, saying, “We took a lot of inspiration early on when we got started on this project from the ...
