About this game

Architecture Zeitgeist is a game created with great care by me, Matheus Rudo, a student at the University of Brasília, with the goal of popularizing the teaching of architecture and making the study of architectural references more immersive. The game has educational purposes and currently features two game modes:

  • Story Mode: In this mode, the player studies the biography of a selected architect. They can walk through projects and search for notes, which tell the story of both the visited project and the architect responsible for it. Once the player collects all the notes about a project, they can move on to the architect’s next project and deepen their studies.

  • Free Mode: In this mode, the player can freely explore the project.

Currently, the game includes the following projects in each mode:

  • Story Mode: Barcelona Pavilion (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe), Azuma House (Tadao Ando), Villa Savoye (Le Corbusier), and Canoas House.

  • Free Mode: Barcelona Pavilion (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe), Azuma House (Tadao Ando), Villa Savoye (Le Corbusier), Fallingwater (Frank Lloyd Wright – still in beta), and Canoas House (Oscar Niemeyer).

Development Roadmap:

  • Addition of Fallingwater by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in both Story Mode and Free Mode.

  • Addition of 4 new maps featuring architect Tadao Ando, in both modes. Preliminary list of projects:
    Church of the Light
    Koshino House
    4x4 House
    Oval House

  • Addition of 4 new maps featuring architect Mies van der Rohe, in both modes. Preliminary list:
    Farnsworth House
    Crown Hall
    Villa Tugendhat
    Seagram Building

  • Addition of 4 new maps featuring architect Le Corbusier, in both modes. Preliminary list:
    Ronchamp Chapel
    Unité d’Habitation
    La Tourette Monastery
    National Museum of Western Art

  • Addition of 4 new maps featuring architect Frank Lloyd Wright, in both modes. Preliminary list:
    Robie House
    Guggenheim Museum New York
    Taliesin West
    Johnson Wax Headquarters

  • Addition of 4 new maps featuring architect Oscar Niemeyer, in both modes. Preliminary list:
    Niterói Contemporary Art Museum
    Pampulha Church
    Itamaraty Palace
    New York Pavilion

  • Game release and end of Early Access.

After that, it is difficult to say. The expectation is that the game will occupy less than 50 GB of disk space. If it reaches 50 GB or more, no new projects will be added, and a new game will need to be released. If there is still room for expansion, we may consider adding new architects. There are countless architects and projects that could be included — we may even open community voting for future additions. These could come as free updates or paid DLC.

The full content of the game will be quite extensive, with around 25 hours of gameplay and 25 maps. There is also interest in investing more in projects focused on Japanese architecture — perhaps a future release like “AZ: Japan”? We’ll see.

Architecture Zeitgeist is an independent, educational, and non-profit project. Purchasing the game is entirely optional, since the content available in the demo corresponds to the full version of the game. Therefore, buying the paid version mainly serves as a way to support the project. All revenue generated from the game’s sales is reinvested directly into its development, contributing to the creation of new maps, technical improvements, optimizations, bug fixes, and the expansion of its educational content. The project is also part of Matheus Rudo’s master’s research at the University of Brasília, Brazil.

    EA v1.9.4 - Small Update

Update list:New music: Based on the asset created by Rudo Studios called “Harmony of the World.” It consists of a set of country-specific tracks. Each country will have 10 songs within the same theme. It was really annoying to listen to the same song for 40 minutes — even I couldn’t take it anymore. Now the music is better, more varied, and more regionalized.New sculptures in the projects: Meshy was used to create digital reconstructions of the artworks from the Barcelona Pavilion, Fallingwater, and Casa das Canoas. This is still a test.Fixes to the initial notes: The initial notes now reflect the recent updates.Other small fixes.

EA v1.9.2 – House in Canoas – Complete

Hello! Well, after such a long time… I hope you’re all doing well. As mentioned before, I haven’t given up—I’ve just been working on my master’s degree. So I’ve been studying a lot about the pedagogical aspects related to the game. I’ve already completed my intermediate defense, and I should present my final defense in December. Setting that personal part aside, let’s get to what matters.Update list:Casa das Canoas by the architect is complete: both story mode and free mode are finished and available in this version. Additionally, lighting bugs that existed in this project have been fixed, and it seems to run more smoothly.General performance improvements: this has been a common complaint and something I struggle to solve. Even so, I believe this version runs lighter overall. Some changes were made to improve performance while maintaining (and in some cases even improving) visual quality.Marking books that have already been read: now, when a book has been read, the game’s logo appears on its cover. This way, it’s marked and players won’t accidentally read it again. Before, there was no way to tell if a book had already been read, which caused confusion.Vegetation: work was done to fix a bug where vegetation didn’t cast shadows. Also, wind effects on vegetation have returned.Dark projects: adjustments were made to lighting so projects appear less dark. This is tricky, because it’s hard to properly light an entire house using only sunlight from a single position. Still, I believe this has improved. Also, it’s always recommended to use the flashlight and turn on project lights.Translation fixes: some parts were simply missing translations. This has been partially fixed, since it’s difficult to identify issues in every language.Other small updates: I updated a lot of things I had been putting off before, but finally got around to fixing. Most of these aren’t noticeable to end users, but they were causing FPS drops in some cases. With these fixes, things should improve. ...

    I haven't given up, okay?

Hello dear friends and supporters of the game. I apologize for disappearing for a while, but as you well know (I made sure you knew), I develop this game on my own and it’s non-profit (at least for now). So, over the past few months, my life has been pretty hectic because I graduated in architecture and immediately started my master’s degree (at the University of Brasília, in Brazil). My master’s thesis is about my game. My idea is to make the entire learning process within the game scientifically validated. So, for now, there won’t be any new maps (more likely next year), and my focus will be on improving the educational side of the game—mainly by improving the texts, developing a more coherent logic, and creating a learning methodology for each architect. This kind of update isn’t the most exciting, but in the long run, it will be great for the game—believe me. Last year, I published an academic paper about the game’s development, which you can find here: "https://sigradi.org/pt/publicacoes/". Click on the 2024 publication, download it, and search for “zeitgeist” using Ctrl+F—you’ll find the article. That way, you’ll better understand the purpose of my master’s degree, which continues from that paper. Thanks for your patience.

2 New Maps - Fallingwater and Casa das Canoas

Hello friends, I know it’s been a while, but I’ve started working on the game alone again. I’m at the end of my architecture studies, and everything has been very hectic. I’m delighted to announce this new version, where I introduce Casa das Canoas by the great Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and Fallingwater by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Both projects are in beta, meaning they are not yet complete; this is just an initial experience I’d like to share with you. Casa das Canoas already includes some furniture, while Fallingwater does not have any yet. The game as a whole has seen small improvements, such as adjustments for better historical representation of the Azuma House, minor performance enhancements, and bug fixes. We are also preparing for the addition of sequential maps. This feature is already implemented in the programming, and the first architect to benefit from this process will be Tadao Ando, as a thank-you for all the game purchases in Japan. That’s all for now. I hope to bring the final or at least more polished versions of these two new works and their story mode maps soon. After that, I’ll add the other maps from architect Tadao Ando (I believe this will be quick, as the Koshino House model is already ready and adapted to Unreal). General Updates: Together with my advisor, we are publishing a paper on the development of the game at the SIGRADI international conference. Anyone interested in learning more is invited to read the paper at the event in Barcelona (we couldn’t secure funding to attend in person). The game project will continue to be developed during my master’s program next year.
