Embark on an isolated mission aboard Endless Dark, managing a silent sleeper ship as it drifts through space. Navigate system failures and preserve your sanity against the void's relentless pressure.
About this game
A refreshing twist on roguelite and storytelling, Endless Dark is a psychological horror game about the pressures of monotony and the purpose of existence.
You, the Custodian, are a sentient machine onboard a sleeper colony ship, charged with keeping it intact. No combat, enemies, or NPCs await you - only a myriad of system failures and the decay of your own sanity as you whittle away the decades in isolation. Hundreds of story events and a deep narrative keep each iteration of you intrigued. Customize your own chassis, repair the ship, and keep your passengers alive long enough to win... something. Can you uncover the intent behind your own creation before you slip into robo-dementia?

STORY MODE
The ship is shadowy in more ways than one. Ancient agreements and long-forgotten understandings conspire against you to keep you in your place. Doing your work. For however long the long-absent conspirators wanted.
Explore a deep narrative that evolves over multiple playthroughs, and choose how you deal with each new revelation. Not all truths will set you free, and some things are better left unsaid.
ENDLESS MODE
For a more mechanical challenge, try the optional endless mode. In this mode, the only objective is to propel the ship as far as you can before you inevitably lose your passengers, your mind, or both. Contend with the confusing oddities of the ship and its myriad catastrophes with a specially written CRISIS CYCLE. Three impending crises, promising grievous and irreparable damage, will be shown to you. Use your intuition, born of your intimate awareness of your vessel, to discern which two crises are lies, and which one is the true threat! Choose wisely - the Crisis will not be gentle if you fail to prepare for it.
PLAYABLE...
Endless Dark has been designed from the start to be eminently playable for Custodians with their own histories. The game has a specially chosen color palate to be visible for numerous kinds of colorblindness, even full monochromacy. Large, clear text makes messages readable at a glance. All Custodians need only bring their willingness to do, explore, and grow.
Busy Custodians also need not fear; distinct, bite-sized turns with effortless autosave allows for drop-in, drop-out play.
Control things your way; the game is fully playable with a gamepad only, keyboard only, or mouse and keyboard.
...AND REPLAYABLE
With over 350,000 words of events, spread over dozens of dilemmas, and a finely tuned Director that applies just the right amount of pressure, Endless Dark is designed to never present the same situation twice. Fight and overcome, or struggle and succumb, the next time will always be different - especially due to your own actions. Your tiniest victories and littlest defeats alike are recorded and remembered. They will remain in subsequent games, to help or haunt you.

Click, chack, clack! It's 1.4, by builders, for builders!
The forge has been hot since 1.3 came out, and we are back with more modding updates, and more requests filled! Now you can build your own:MapThe map creator that we used internally has been updated and folded into the main game. Our internal tool is now completely gone, completely obsoleted by the new tool, so everyone has exactly the same tools now.You can edit all 7 map layers: terrain, walls, overlays, objects, nodes, lights. In addition, there's keyboard/mouse controls, a camera with up to a 3x zoom, paginated per-layer tiles you can deploy, and hover tooltips for everything. There's also a helper for organizing teleport nodes, so you can do things like link the Command deck to the Underworks the way the vanilla game does.CustodianWe've modularized making your own Custodian into its own assisted screen in game. With a dead-simple interface, you can now set up a fully custom, playable robot that has its own name, model, starting parts, reliability, speed, and description. You can also set up its sprite set, define new or reuse existing personality tags, and set up your Custodian's perk loadout. It even has a place for helping you define new perks, if you don't want to reuse existing ones!Be aware: Custodian data is still pulled in when the game launches, so a newly created Custodian won't be ready for a new game launch until you close and reopen the game!Spritesheet (and more!)Mods can now override and add game content, not just run scripts in our pre-defined hooks. Maps, terrain, objects, nodes, and lights now have an established and specific hierarchy: An enabled mod's assets beat your own save-directory edits, which in turn beats the base game. This allows us to make good on a request made a few versions back: The old sprite sheet is now available as a Workshop mod. If you preferred the classic look, simply pop in that official mod (you can find it HERE), and away you go!Mod!But what good are all these new toys if you can't package them up and share them? Patch 1.3 is here!
One benefit to the unbearable heat of summer is that it gives you a lot of reasons to stay inside. And as it turns out, when you stay inside and you are not constantly harassed by between two and four horsemen of the apocalypse, you get a lot of thinking done. And it turns out, thinking gives you lots of ideas.Circle up, Custodians. A number of truly unhinged ideas are coming in hot, and you are all now witness to them.Steam Workshop SupportWhen we originally launched mod support, we fell back on NexusMods because it was far simpler to accomplish with the time we had available and had a proven track record older than many current-day college graduates.Naturally, mere months after we got things started off, Nexus Mods was acquired by a shadowy corporate entity that said the bare minimum to not make their audience immediately abandon ship, but otherwise failed to inspire a lot of confidence, or make real commitments to the future of the site.Regardless of what does or doesn't happen with Nexus, we as developers couldn't ignore the similarities between what happened there and the dozens upon dozens of other shadowy corporate acquisitions in the gaming world. We've also been players for decades. We've watched helplessly as dozens of IPs and hundreds of fun game modes get hoarded up by magpie-like companies intent on making de-facto fiefdoms out of culture. Especially when the tag line "We partner. We amplify. We conquer." is being thrown around. We are not important developers, nor are we part of some great movement. But we are old enough to see where this ends, and our first unhinged idea was: How about NO?The Steam Workshop is now enabled for Endless Dark. The existing mods menu will let you do everything you expect, including upload a mod you've created and placed in your installation of the game manually. The local-only distribution flow that we originally created for Nexus Mods is still 100% functional, and we fully encourage any mod makers to upload their mods to bo...Read full article on Community Announcements (Coolguy)Patch NotesOfficial
Patch 1.2 - Darker Still Full Release
After a lengthy beta process that ended up even more lengthy due to more personal turmoil, what is probably our largest update ever, including 1.0, is now live. Let's go over some of the changes - there's a LOT, so forgive us for moving quick on each thing!New graphicsThe most obvious thing you will notice is that every tile in the game has been redone. Our own newness to game making meant that we ended up with a bit of a mishmash of perspectives and approaches in our old sprite set, and it really didn't come together as a coherent whole. With the help of the awesome pixel artist Downvote, we've gotten a complete visual overhaul, which brings with it a new sense of life and coordination. Robbie comes off great from the changes, and it's not the only one. Please enjoy the new slickness to our favorite brutalist bots and their rattling home!New System DesignsMost of the systems on the ship now have their own subsystems that help them do their jobs, rather than simply providing the function themselves. Reactor:Now charges Batteries, which is what actually provides power to systems. Batteries discharge every turn, whether you use the power or not. Consequently, a reactor failure is a next-turn problem, not a this-turn problem that will cause immediate blackouts.Navigation:Now collects information from Scanner arrays, and displays it for your use. The Scanners are what actually gets weather data - if they are offline, you will not be able to see the weather they correspond to. Shields:Now charges Capacitors, which expend energy to repel damage. The more Capacitors you have charged, the more likely you are to avoid damage. Damage tends to come in more bursts now, so having many Capacitors charged can be a very strategic decision.Speaking of damage, let's talk about the-New Damage SystemMajor systems, like the abovementioned Reactor, Shields, Cryo, etc, are no longer damaged by random chance and entropy. The new minor components (Batteries, Scanner arrays, Capacitors, and ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Coolguy)AnnouncementsOfficial
The 1.2 (Darker Still) Beta is now available on steam
Engineers - Eyes and ears!As most of you are probably aware, we read every SINGLE review that comes through. Fundamentally, we think that if you have taken the time to put down your sincere thoughts for the game we've made, you deserve the time it takes for us to absorb it.Even in the positive reviews, there are often really important criticisms that we can extract to make the game better. And some of those criticisms have been hard to field. These are things like:The gameplay loop is too simplisticThe RNG feels too capriciousThe graphics, as a whole, are too simplisticThe tutorial is too long, tells you too little, and onboarding is too onerousThese things require a fundamental rethinking and reordering of how the game presents itself and functions. It's a huge amount of effort, and to do it correctly would require a level of effort akin to our big lifts simply finishing the game in the first place.....So anyway, we started fixing.Yeah, we did it. 1.2 is the culmination of about a year of work. This post is going to hit the highlights of the changes, and there will be followup posts on the fine specifics as the beta goes on - with notes on how everything has evolved thanks to players giving us feedback on the beta! How to joinThe beta is public on Steam right now. Simply right click on Endless Dark in your library, go to Properties, and look for Betas on the left hand side. You want "1.2publicbeta".How to contributeTalk to us! Give us your feelings, your thoughts, and ESPECIALLY any bugs you find! The discord and the discussion forums are both ideal. The forums in particular will be playing host to a 'beta updates' thread that will document all the changes as they happen, rather than the timeline being updated every time. What to expectIt's really not an exaggeration to say that you should expect a completely different game. The narrative has not been touched too much, but almost everything else has.The rest of this update is going to go over, in a pretty quick way, ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Coolguy)AnnouncementsOfficial
Arriving now at slipway 2: version 1.1!
Hello again, Custodians! We've got a bunch of good things in this patch across the board. First things first, let's start with the functional changes. Saving Throws Maxing out your Psychosis is a game over - we know that. Or do we? One thing that has popped up for us as designers again and again is that while we provide a tool to edgerun Psychosis (the Circuit Breaker module), few players seem to pick up on and use it. Instead of trying to harp on the topic, we decided to upgrade the entire concept with a new event - the Saving Throw. Once per game, at 100 Psychosis, a special event will pop to give you a chance to resist the psychotic shutdown. If you hit the chance, your Psychosis is set to 90 and you can continue to fight to the end. You can increase your chances of making the throw by making certain... sacrifices. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43539450/26c67706b5f4f1836b5a065c1b97e5ce88e33c2e.png At the end of it, though, it comes down to a roll of the dice. Succeed, and you get a reprieve: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43539450/2a35a018b71ae5a106a9d82aba126bb1f9a8055c.png Fail, and that's the end of it. Running yourself to the wall is still not great, either for Custodians or the overworked heroes they resemble, so taking sacrifice options will reduce your end Score by quite a bit. Conversely, refusing to roll the dice or take any options will give you a large bonus to your Score for narrative reasons. Simply rolling the dice will have no effect on your Score. The Circuit Breaker module still exists and continues to work the same way it did. It will not affect your Score and using it is basically considered a valid usage of resources and planning. The only tweak is that it now sets your Psychosis to 90, rather than 85, to bring it in line with Saving Throws. Polish and Finishing 1.1 includes another 2 dozen fixes of various typos, awkward sentences, punctuation fixes, and mistaken word choice. It also includes a buff for FRANK's "Crushin' it" perk, earned from the Pumpin' Iron self-...Read full article on Community Announcements (Coolguy)
