Story

When a dark mist laid itself over the land, rendering most regions uninhabitable, mysterious towers started rising from the ground. These towers released many a treacherous beast upon this sorry world. However they also seemed to keep the mist at bay, leading to the last survivors of mankind to gather around and explore their perilous depths. You are a Marked One, one of many, doomed to be molded anew in a seemingly endless cycle of life and death. It is on you to use your peculiar power to venture deep into the tower and uncover the truth about the mist, the towers and the fate of the world.

Prepare

The town of Fincester is home to many strange and eccentric inhabitants, all having one thing in common: Wanting to survive. Help the townspeople in these trying times and develop Fincester’s facilities using resources gathered in the tower to unlock various items and upgrades that will ensure you don’t enter the dangerous tower unprepared. After all, preperation is key to survive and it can never hurt to have too many friends.

Adapt

The life of a Marked One is an uncertain one. They never know what form they will take next nor how long they will inhabit their current incarnation before perishing and being molded anew. Not everyone is strong enough to wield a sword, just as not everyone knows how to make use of firearms or the arcane. Know your strengths and weaknesses or death will be certain!

Survive

In the tower every fight, every step could be your last. Your enemies will use everything in their power to stop you. It is on you to do the same. Gather and use a wide variety of firearms and melee weaponry - all with different elements and status effects - to gain the upper hand. Avail yourself of the magical and arcane powers your birth sign bestowed upon you. Trick your enemies into walking right into one of their own traps or attacks. Sneak right by them and try for pacifism. Nothing is off the table when it comes to surviving the tower.

Fincester Tower is going to undergo big changes

Greetings Marked Ones I come with bad and good news. First of all I want to apologize for being silent about Fincester Tower for a while now. As some of your know I develop this game completely by myself on my own time and sometimes things don't go exactly or even close to how they're planned. And Fincester Tower has unfortunately been influenced by both real life as well as my own limited skillset as a developer. And that last bit is what I want to talk to you about. First let's start talking about the bad news Fincester Tower, as it is right now, will not be released. The reasons for that are plenty but I'll try to go into detail about everything I can. First off, Fincester Tower was a very ambitious idea coming from not only a Solo Developer, but also someone who hasn't worked on many games before that. I have worked on multiple prototypes that I've always had to cancel because somewhere I've coded myself into a corner. I started Fincester Tower when I thought I was experienced enough that these things don't happen anymore but I was unfortunately very wrong. While every bit of gameplay that I've added does work it is being held together by soggy duct tape and bubble gum. Minor changes to the gameplay that would take a few days tops (were my code written well) take multiple weeks or even months, and that's entirely on me. If only fringe features like the status effects or the food were affected that wouldn't be much of a problem, but unfortunately the entire combat system and the character generation as well as the inventory and chest systems are all affected. Too many systems aren't modular enough for me to quickly change some things or for me to easily replace them. At this point there are two options: Write each element anew or start over completely. Unfortunately I don't think I can take it on me to write each part anew, because most mechanics interact with each other one way or another, so it would be a lot easier to start from anew, which will - ultimately -...

    Devlog #1

Greetings Marked Ones I figured I would start a devlog on here to let you all know how the development for Fincester Tower is going and what exactly I am working on as to not worry anyone that the game may be dead. Unfortunately is Fincester Tower not only a rather big game developed by one person, but it is also my first "real" solodev project. So while progress is being made constantly, it is also still a learning experience for me. Originally I come from GameAudio, Level Design and to some degree Pixel Art so things like 3D Modelling, Coding and Writing are all things I have been slowly picking up on. I am personally okay with the 3D art being imperfect, but the atmopshere and gameplay are extremely important to me, so often times things that are already done are being rewritten. So please be patient with me! Enough with introductions! What has changed since I opened up the Steam Store page? Status Effects Status Effects make up a lot of the games' mechanics, as I like to keep the gameplay as modular as possible. So for example if you are burning, walking through water will cure you of that status effect, walking through an oil puddle will set it on fire, walking next to an explodable cannister may make it explode, walking past a torch would light it, etc. As weird as it may sound but when it comes to Status Effects, especially the ones mostly seen as negative one of my main inspirations have been Wario Land 2 and 3, where one could make the best of negative situations. Obviously not every Status Effect is going to be this complex and modular, but I'm trying my best to make a lot of them like this. Another challenge Status Effects have shown me is that there are multiple Status Effects that are treated the same in conventional RPGs, like poisoned, bleeding and burning for example. I don't want these "damage over time" status effects to feel too similar. How burning feels differently I've already described but what is the difference between bleeding and poisoning?...
